Transportation Safety Tips

The following are some general safety tips regarding students who are transported.

  • Some buses start picking up students very early. It may be dark at that time, please be aware that young people are out and about during that time.
  • Students en route to bus stops during the early morning hours should be dressed appropriately for both weather and visibility.
  • A lot of school buses of different sizes are now sharing the road with other drivers.
  • Avoid rear-end collisions. Remember that all school buses by law must stop at railroad crossings.
  • A school bus that has amber lights flashing is preparing to stop.
  • A school bus that has red lights flashing and stop arm extended is either picking up or discharging students. Stop at a distance where you as the driver can see the activity around the bus.
  • It is against the law to pass a school bus that is stopped with red lights flashing and stop arm extended. The fine is $300.
  • Students should be aware of the danger zone extending 10 feet from the bus on all sides. When students are in the danger zone the driver cannot see them. Students are encouraged to cross in front of the bus.

It is vitally important that everyone think about safety, especially when it comes to children.
