About Humboldt

ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY
Humboldt, located in Southeast Kansas in Allen County, sits half way between Iola and Chanute on US 169 Hwy. Humboldt, in the middle of it all, is 115 miles east of Wichita, 110 miles southwest of Kansas City, 115 miles north of Tulsa, OK, and 100 miles northwest of Joplin, MO. Our town has a population of about 1,900 and we are very proud of our community, our people and our heritage. Since our founding in 1857, Humboldt has nurtured a spirit of diversity that still enhances the quality of life for all our people.

Humboldt, situated along the east banks of the Neosho River, is a historic community with old fashioned charm and grace that welcomes all who are interested in a small-town way of life. George Sweatt Memorial Park, a newly updated swimming pool in Centennial Park, Veterans’ Memorial in the city square, a twelve site civil war tour, and the elegant churches are just a few of the reasons why Humboldt is so attractive.
Humboldt’s notable natives include Walter Johnson “The Big Train” who won 417 games as a pitcher for the Washington Senators and George Sweatt, a player for the Kansas City Monarchs.

Humboldt is also home to “Biblesta” the only Bible Celebration of its kind in the nation. The Celebration includes a Bible Themed Parade that consists of floats depicting events from the Bible. The parade includes biblical themed floats, walking entries, equestrian units, and marching bands playing Christian music. Participants are dressed in Biblical costumes. The events are arranged in chronological order from Genesis to Revelation. Other Biblesta activities include concerts performed by nationally known gospel entertainers in the city square, arts and crafts, food vendors, kids’ games, window displays, a 3K walk, a 5K or 10K “Run for the Son” and a free ham and bean feed.

The City of Humboldt operates the gas, water, sanitation, and trash pickup utilities. Evergy operates the electrical distribution system and has an office in Humboldt. The city has a highly regarded volunteer fire department and a professional police department with personnel on duty 24-hours a day. Ambulance service also provides 24-hour around the clock coverage for the community. Family Physicians and Ashley Clinic provide medical professionals and a pharmacy to our community.

Recreation is a premier feature of our area with Camp Hunter, Cannon Park, Centennial Park, River Park, and Sweatt Park providing camping, baseball diamonds, tennis courts, sand volleyball, a walking trail, outdoor exercise equipment, and a newly updated city Aquatic Center. USD #258 Humboldt Schools also opened its new Community Field House in the summer of 2007, which has many opportunities for exercise. Patrons can utilize an indoor walking track, cardio room, and weight room.

Our businesses are progressive and customer-oriented. Humboldt has forward-looking entrepreneurs who are facing the challenges of the future. Our businesses and public services are expanding to meet the needs of our people. In addition to many privately-owned small businesses, many residents are employed in agriculture and manufacturing, including the Monarch Cement Company, B & W Custom Truck Beds, Humboldt Industries, Whitaker Aggregates, and others.

Humboldt has the best of both worlds--the amenities of small-town America with all the conveniences of many major metropolitan areas a short drive away. Humboldt, a dynamic and extremely solid community, provides families a chance to grow. Our people are proud of our community and invite others to come share with us. Come, see for yourself, Humboldt is truly a unique place to live, work and raise a family!
