Parents As Teachers is a free voluntary program designed to
provide practical, timely information to all families including single parents,
first-time parents and expectant parents. The program is available to anyone
who has a child under the age of three and lives within a participating school
district.
The Parents As Teachers program was created in 1981 by the Missouri Department
of Elementary and Secondary Education and was designed to maximize children's
overall development during the first three years of life. Since 1981, the program
hs been implemented in all 50 states in the USA as well as abroad in Australia,
Canada, England, Malaysia, New Zealand and the West Indies.
Kansas can be proud of its strong implementation of the Parents As Teachers
program and commitment to young children. Started in 1988 as a pilot project
of the Kansas Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse, Kansas PAT sites
have grown to over 200 school districts with 12,000 families served each year.
