“ I think the team played well,” Hannah McCall, fr., said. “We just didn’t play our best, and we made the wrong mistakes.”

Senior Kelci Owens led the team with 25 points while making 12 of her 13 free throw attempts.

“ We should have beat Caney,” Owens said. “We played with them rather than pulling away when we had the lead.”

Lenzie Boring, sr., also hit double digit points making two of her five free throws and hitting four two-pointers to give her 10 points for the night.

At the beginning of the second half, the Cubs managed to put themselves back into the game by scoring 11 more points; they were down by one at the start of the fourth quarter. The girls worked hard trying to get ahead.

“ Our defense was pretty good,” Jeff Wilkerson, coach, said, “considering Burlington only scored 28 in the third quarter of the game.”

Senior Kelci Owens scored a total of 15 points for the Lady Cubs, including one three point shot, a two point shot, and 10 free throws.

Lenzie Boring, sr., followed closely behind Owens with 11 points, consisting of two three point shots and one two point shot.

“ We were doing a good job keeping up with them but defensively were not shutting them down,” Callie Umholtz, sr., said. “We were not working the ball around and our shots were not making it which hurt us in the end.”

“ We were able to slow down and run through our offense toward the end of the game,” Kelci Owens, sr., said. “We also adjusted to their offense and played great defense.”

The Lady Cubs started the first quarter slow, only scoring nine points. Oswego was ahead by six at the end of the quarter. Humboldt’s offense was working, but defensively, they were having troubles.

Coming out for the second quarter the girls started to play, and their defense started picking up. They were shutting out the Indians and began to add points to the board. After the second quarter, Humboldt was ahead 26-23.

“ We played well together and kept moving up and down the court,” Megan Dillow, sr., said. “We also moved the ball around and kept them shut down on defense.”

The second half started out evenly matched, with both teams fighting for the first score. Humboldt was the first to score with Kelci Owens, sr., shooting a two-pointer from the field. The girls kept the lead the rest of the half and kept adding to it. The Lady Cubs won with the final score being 63-50.

Humboldt boy’s varsity came out of the locker room ready and fired up. They started the first half working the ball in and driving to the basket.

The Cubs kept adding points and were able to keep the Indians shut down when on defense. After the first half the boys were ahead with a score of 26-20.

“ We played hard and shot better than usual,” Derrik McCall, so., said, “Although one of our mistakes was showing negative body language when the other team scored.”

After the half, the boys came out and started to crumble. Oswego was able to catch up and began to take the lead. Humboldt would have to work to catch up, but was unable to. The Cubs scored six points in the fourth compared to the Indian’s 20. Humboldt lost with a final score of 40-54.

Both junior varsity teams again added to their losses for the season on Feb. 3 at Neodesha. The boys struggled to make shots, while the girls followed closely behind the Bluestreaks.

The Cubs started off slow in the first and second quarters, and despite stepping up defensively to allow only four Bluestreak points in the second quarter, the team trailed 19-13 at the half.

In the second half, however, Humboldt was only able to make one shot. The Bluestreaks dominated the court and ended the game 15-51.

The Lady Cubs, on the other hand, were able to stay fairly close to their opponents and finished the game down by ten with a final score of 27-37.

“ We have small numbers in JV so everyone needs to know every position,” Miranda Myer, fr., said, “sometimes we get confused, mess up, and get down. That hurts us a lot, but we keep each other going.”

The boys basketball team traveled to Caney Valley on Feb. 10 looking for a win. The Cubs were unable to defeat the Bullpups, however, losing with a final score of 36-52.

From the beginning of the game, the boys were unable to get things going the right direction for them. The first quarter ended with the Cubs trailing 9-14.

The second quarter proved to be just as difficult for the Cubs to score; they only scored two points to the Pups’ 13 making the score 12-27 going into halftime.

When the boys came out of the locker room, they were looking to cut the lead and get back into the game which would prove to be a difficult task.

Coronado, jr., following behind. Humboldt was close to Caney but could not pull off a win.

The team managed to cut the margin to 25-37 at the end of the third quarter of play. However, they were not able to overcome the deficit in the final quarter, scoring 11 compared to Caney’s 15 points.

“We didn’t play with any intensity or heart,” Josh Elder, sr., said. “I’m upset we lost because it was a win we should have had.”

Junior Tevin Strack led Humboldt with 17 points and nine rebounds. Strack was followed by Chris Coronado, jr., who contributed eight points and nine rebounds.

The team struggled scoring, as they went 11 of 54 from the field and 13 for 35 from the free throw line.

“I don’t think we were mentally focused coming out in the beginning,” Chris Coronado, jr., said. “We could have played better defense and worked the offense more.”

The Yellowjackets visited the Fieldhouse Jan. 30 for a night of basketball. The crowd was extra large due to awards being handed out throughout the evening to students scoring exemplary on state assessments last year.

The night was a success for the varsity Lady Cubs as they pulled through for a 53-44 victory. However, the varsity boys along with the junior varsity boys and girls were not as successful. In an intense match, the varsity Cubs fell short with a 41-53 loss. The junior varsity girls and boys lost with scores of 26-33 and 23-30, respectively.

After falling behind in the first quarter the Lady Cubs managed to battle back for a one-point lead in the second quarter. The teams stepped off the court for halftime with Humboldt leading 20-19.

The Lady Cubs slightly increased the margin in the third quarter, which ended 33-31. The team finished the game with a 53-44 victory.

“We outletted the ball well, and we got good rebounds from our great blockouts,” Lenzie Boring, sr., said. “We have greatly improved on our defense this year, and our free throw percentage has increased.”

Several debatable foul calls weighed down the varsity Cubs’ efforts as they struggled against Fredonia. In the first quarter, Humboldt was outscored by the Jackets 8-15.

Fighting back, the team scored 13 points in the second quarter while only allowing Fredonia to score five. At halftime the Cubs led 21-20.

After a tug-of-war third quarter, the score shifted to Fredonia’s advantage with the Cubs behind 35-37. It seemed the game could go either way, but the Cub’s momentum slowed in the fourth. The team fell behind, and the game ended 41-53.

On Feb. 6, the high school boys basketball team took the court for the Sweetheart game against Burlington.

All hopes were high to get a win not only because of playing for their home crowd, but also because of the hype of Sweetheart. However, the boys ended up losing 31-61.

After the end of the first quarter of play, the Cubs were down 7-20. The team’s troubles continued throughout the first half as the score going into halftime had the Cubs behind 14-40.

Junior Tevin Strack goes up to block a Burlington Wildcat layup. Strack had three rebounds for the
game. Humboldt only had 14 points compared to Burlington’s 40 points in just the first half. “I
thought we were out-matched size wise, so we needed to run more offense,” Strack said.

Coming out of the locker room the team hoped to cut the lead to get back into the game; however, the third quarter ended with a score of 22-53.

“We didn’t play to our full potential and didn’t run our offense,” Elijah Friederich, jr., said. “It could have been closer if our shots would have went in, and we would have ran our offense the way we should have.”

As a team, the Cubs went 11 for 50 from the field, shooting 22 percent. Junior Tevin Strack led the Cubs with 16 points and two steals. They were able to grab 15 rebounds. Turnovers were not a huge factor in the game, having only six as a team.

“We played okay for a while, but then turned the ball over too much,” Seth Nickell, so., said.

A 37-42 let down gave the Cubs yet another loss on the season. With the score just about tied up at the end of the third quarter, Humboldt just could not get the points needed in the fourth to upset Neodesha.

“It feels good to be improving because it shows that we are not giving up just because of what our record is,” Tyler Gean, jr., said.
