On Oct. 30 the Humboldt Cubs football team played their last regular season game against Olpe.

Despite the team’s effort, they were defeated 7-20.

“Special teams hurt the team the most during the game,” coach Tim Endicott said. “A snap that went over our heads resulted in a touchdown, and they ran a punt back for a touchdown.”

Humboldt came out of halftime ready to make up lost points but was not able to make the points needed.

The Cubs had 151 rushing yards, 169 offensive yards and 13 first downs during the game.

“[Olpe] was a good team, but we played hard and never gave up,” Cody Cramer, jr., said.

Senior Andrew Whitaker ran the ball one yard for a touchdown, and senior Thad Wells scored the extra point.

“They [the Cubs] played very well together,” Endicott said. “Take out the two special team’s errors, and it would have been a completely different game.”

The 2008 football season has come to an end as the Humboldt Cubs lost their first round playoff game to the Moundridge Wildcats 28-12 on Nov. 4.

“I felt our kids played hard all season,” Travis Burk, head coach, said. “I was really proud of our kids after starting 0-2 and having a winning season.”

The Wildcats ate up the clock in the first quarter when they drove down the field for over nine minutes.

Humboldt then gave the ball away on their first drive. Moundridge took advantage of that turnover when they threw a deep pass for a touchdown giving them a 14-0 lead.

After a 14-yard touchdown run by senior Scott Sollars the Cubs were back in the game going into halftime with a score of 14-6.

Coming out of halftime, Moundridge managed to find the end zone once in both the third and fourth quarters.

Christian Hicks, jr., had a 9-yard run for six points late in the fourth making the score 12-28.

“I was glad to see Hicks make a touchdown in the end of the game because he has worked hard all year and was well deserving of it,” Andrew Whitaker, sr., said. “I was happy with the season because the whole team came together very well.”

Hicks led the offense in rushing with 67 yards followed by Whitaker with 56 yards. Whitaker passed for 35 yards on nine attempts. Sollars led in receiving with 29 yards on two receptions.

Humboldt finished their season, after an impressive rebound early in the year, with a 6-4 record.

As for Raquel, I still have her for two more years and am excited to see her continue to make great strides as a runner.”
