With only a few days of rest after their tournament Sept. 20, the Lady Cubs were ready for action Tuesday night. They battled the Burlington Wildcats and won two matches against them.

The Lady Cubs had a little trouble with their serving, but they were still able to follow through in serving as a team with eight aces in the first match and 10 in the second.

“We did have serving errors,” Lenzie Boring, sr., said, “but the team did a great job talking, adjusting and staying ahead. Our communication is weak but getting better with each match we play.”

The matches were slow starting out as the Lady Cubs dominated the court winning the first match in two games, 25-10 and 25-19; however, things heated up in the second match.

the past four years. The team went on to beat the Cats in two matches.

In the second match they lost the first game 18-25, but battled back to beat Burlington in the second and third games with scores of 25-12 and 25-11.

“I wasn’t nervous after we lost the first match,” Melissa Davidson, so., said. “I knew we could beat them; we just had to increase our intensity and play hard like we do in practice.”

At the Iola tournament Saturday Sept. 13, the Lady Cubs were beaten by Burlington after already playing five matches.

“I thought that because we lost to Burlington in the Iola tournament they would be over-confident about the match,” Dillow said. “We showed them what kind of team we really are.”

Up next for the Lady Cub volleyball team is the Burlington Tournament tomorrow, and they will be back in action at home Tuesday night to take on Yates Center and Frontenac.

Home tourney proves disappointing

Tournament season for volleyball is well underway as Humboldt hosted their own tourney on Sept. 20, but the Lady Cubs were unable to defend their championship title from last year as Lebo went undefeated in all of their matches.

Humboldt played their first match of the day against Altoona and took them easily in two games 25-10 and 25-6. Kelci Owens, sr., was the only player to receive any assists, totaling 14 of them.

Kills were split up among the players, but Megan Dillow, sr., had the most of everyone with six. Altogether the team served 10 aces.

Next, the Cubs faced the Yates Center Wildcats and won the match in two games, both with scores of 25-17. Again Owens led in assists with 17 this time, while Lenzie Boring, sr., slammed down nine kills. Owens also served three aces, and Callie Umholtz, sr., got three blocks.

In order to reach bracket play to make it to the championship game, Humboldt needed to beat either Lebo or St. Mary’s Colgan. After some amazing comebacks, long rallies, and three very intense and close games against Lebo, the Lady Cubs fell, putting on the pressure to beat Colgan.

Umholtz made seven blocks against Lebo, and leading in digs was Myers with 17. Boring had 12 kills out of Owens’ 22 assists. The team had a total of 13 aces.

Humboldt went into the Colgan game confident, but lost the first game 23-25. Colgan took the next game and match easily 11-25, ending the tournament for the Lady Cubs.

Owens had 12 assists, and Dillow got seven kills; Umholtz blocked seven hits.

“We played well against Lebo, but we struggled to get anything going against Colgan,” head coach Staci Hudlin said.

Eight teams participated in the annual Iola volleyball tournament. The Lady Cubs brought home fourth place.

In pool play, they lost two close games to Anderson County to start off the morning.

Lenzie Boring, sr., led the team in kills with eight. Senior Kelci Owens made 17 assists and had eight digs. Bailey Myers, sr., dug up 16 hits from the Bulldogs.

Labette County has previously been a challenge for Humboldt, but not this year, as they took the match in two games with scores of 25-19 and 25-21. Owens led in assists with 17, Myers had six digs, and Boring made nine kills.

“Our team played very well together and our communication was great,” Myers said. “We are always more successful when we communicate.”

The Lady Cubs defeated Cherryvale in their third match of pool play. The Chargers did not go down easily, however, as the match went to three games. Humboldt won the first and third, 26-24, and 25-20. Owens made 22 assists, and Boring had 10 kills. Winning this match allowed the team to participate in bracket play.

A three-game match against Pittsburg kicked off bracket play. The Lady Cubs fought in the first game, winning 26-24. Game two of the match ended, 9-25, in favor of the Dragons. Myers made 20 digs, and Dillow led in kills with eight for the match. A close score of 23-25 ended the match and sent Humboldt to play against Burlington for third place.

The Wildcats defeated them in two games, 24-26 and 18-25.

“We played well,” Owens said. “Hopefully we can keep up our communication and do well this season.”

The first game of the Cherryvale match ended in Humboldt’s favor with a score of 25-13. However, Cherryvale came back in the second game defeating Humboldt with a score of 18-25 taking the match to three games.

“I think that we were not communicating as well as the first game and were a little overly confident the second,” Brandi Malloy, so., said.

It was a close competition in the third and final match, but Humboldt pulled it out and finished with a 28-26 win against the Chargers.

Senior Bailey Myers led the team with 15 points. Megan Dillow, sr., followed with 10.

Dillow led in aces with four. Senior Randi Barnett added two.

Barnett also led in aces with a total of three. Dillow who added two, followed her.

The Cubs started off the game slow scoring half way through the first quarter when Andrew Whitaker, sr., lobbed a pass over the defense to Troy Davis, sr., for a 23-yard touchdown.

Later in the first quarter Devin Onnen, sr., ran the ball into the end zone from two yards out to make the score 14-0.

Christian Hicks, jr., had the only score in the second quarter with a 55-yard touchdown run, and Onnen added the two-point conversion ending the first half 22-0.

attempt. Wells was two for three on extra points against the Tornadoes.

Thad Wells, sr., got the offense rolling with consecutive touchdowns of 58 and 26-yards.

“The team stepped up a lot from last week,” Wells said. “The line blocked really well; they blew Eureka off the ball and created holes for the backs. The running backs and special teams looked good, but we can get better.”

At the end of the third quarter the Cubs were up on the Tornadoes 50-0. Chris Headley, so., capped off the scoring by running his first varsity touchdown from two yards out.

“This was my first time to play varsity for offense,” Headley said. “Scoring a touchdown was exciting and made me want to work even harder to get more playing time.”

Up next for the Cubs will be the Fredonia Yellowjackets tonight at 7 p.m. in Fredonia.

The team is looking forward to showing improvement while trying to add another win to their record.

“It’s [Our improvement] going to show tonight because we are going to shove their heads in the dirt,” Wells said.

Whitaker, who left the game in the second quarter of the Eureka game, will be suiting up tonight against Fredonia.
