it is surprising how fast the season has already progressed,” Callie

to practice before we had to play.”

Humboldt opened the 2009 track season at Central Heights
on Apr. 3. The track team had great success in its first appearance with
six individuals and one relay team finishing sixth or better.
“I was pleased with our team,” Eric Carlson, coach, said. “We
are not as conditioned as I would like. Our field event people did a good
job. Many of them have had little practice in their events due to the weather.”
For the boys team, Andy Hill, sr., placed fifth in both the 2-mile with a
time of 11:39 and the high jump at 5’4”.
Senior Chris Winner placed third in the 110m hurdles and the 300m hurdles
with times of 16.6 and 44.5 seconds respectively. Junior Nick Miller placed
fifth in the 100m dash with a time of 11.9 seconds.

I’m only a freshman,” Carson said. “Teamwork and encouragement
were two huge factors that helped us win.”
In the second game, sophomore Melissa Davidson pitched for the first time
as a varsity starter. Davidson pitched all five innings and allowed only two
runs, four hits, and three walks. Davidson also struck out five people, while
the Red Devils only scored two points the entire game. With bases loaded in
the third inning, Davidson managed to get out with no runs scored.
“ It was hard at first to hit off their pitcher, but after we got the
timing down we started hitting very well,” Davidson said. “We
could improve on making smarter plays and base running, but overall we did
well.”
Senior Megan Dillow hit two singles, stole three bases, and batted two runs
in. Umholtz and senior Kelci Owens both batted three runs in during the second
game against Erie.
After two postponements, the boys finally got to play their
first baseball game. The games both proved worth the wait as Humboldt started
off their season with two wins against the Neodesha Bluestreaks.

five hits and one walk. He also pitched four strikeouts throughout his five
