Lady Cubs place second at Substate
By Scott Sollars

Ending their season with a 15-8 record on Mar. 7, the girls basketball team traveled to Northeast Arma to play Colgan for the Substate championship game. The team made it to the championship following a win against Oswego on Mar. 6
.
During the Oswego game, the Lady Cubs trailed for a majority of the game. In the fourth quarter, however, Humboldt was able to turn the game around and edge their way past the Indians by just two points.

“ It was awesome to come back and win,” Callie Umholtz, sr., said. “We worked really hard in the last few minutes and never gave up.”

Umholtz led the team with 16 points, six of them coming from free throws. Seniors Kelci Owens and Megan Dillow led the team in free throws made with seven each, which helped the team to a 56 percent free throw percentage.

The next day, Humboldt again made the trip to Arma with high hopes to upset Colgan and make a trip to the State competition.

At first it seemed that the Lady Cubs were going to accomplish their goal, but they lost the lead just before halftime and never got it back.

“We were excited to get to play Colgan for the championship,” Dillow said. “We wanted to beat them really bad; we all knew we could beat them, but it just slipped through our fingers.”

At the end of the first quarter the Lady Cubs were up by two, but every quarter after that was downhill. Colgan increased their lead from five points at halftime to 18 at the end of the third, and finally by 20 at the end of the game.

Owens made 19 of the team’s 41 points and made 15 of her 15 free throw attempts. Lenzie Boring, sr., added another 17 points making seven of her nine free throw attempts and making two of the team’s only three-pointers.

As a team, the Lady Cubs shot 25 of 30 from the free throw line for 83 percent.

Juniors Jacob Manbeck, Elijah Friederich along with seniors Todd Hauser and
Troy Davis cheer on the girls team as they pull out a two-point victory against Oswego.

During the game, Humboldt only made 16 points that were not free throws.

“ We could have come out after halftime with more intensity,” Boring said, “but we got to the championship game, which was our goal for the season, and we finished well.”

Next year, the Lady Cubs will face the challenge of losing five seniors from this year’s senior-heavy roster.

“ It is upsetting that we lost all our seniors. Having to replace them will be difficult, and I think the record will not be as good,” Taylyn Wells, fr., said. “I am confident that if we work hard during practice and are determined we will have some wins in the upcoming year.

Owens averaged 20.3 points a game and had a total of 467 points in this year's season.

“ It is a pretty big accomplishment to be placed as number one on the leaders board,” Owens said. “I set a goal for myself, and I am glad that I was able to achieve it.”

Owens has been playing basketball since fifth grade and has played at the varsity level since her freshmen year.

“ My teammates were very supportive throughout the season, and I could not have made it without them,” Owens said.

Team sets goal to place at State

With six seniors, one sophomore, and two coaches returning from last year, the Lady Cubs have a very positive outlook for this season. The team’s goals this year include improving from last year’s record, making it to State, and placing at State.

Among the returning seniors are last year’s All-League and All-State winners Lenzie Boring and Callie Umholtz, All-League winner Kelci Owens, and All-State first team winner Megan Dillow.

“I’m excited for our senior loaded team,” Brad Piley, head coach, said. “We should have a lot of experience going into this season. I also have a lot of young girls that worked hard last summer to get ready for this year.”

New members of the team include eight freshmen that will be fighting for varsity positions left open from last year’s seniors.

Freshman Kylee Carson will be playing first base this year for the first time.

“It has been very difficult [getting used to a new position]. I’ve never played first before, but I’m getting the hang of it,” Carson said.

Last season, coaches Piley and Dave Taylor led their team to a 20-3 record, including a State appearance.

Piley has led the team to State for four years in a row through a lot of dedication and practice. The team has been hard at work, even over Spring Break, when they held optional practice all week long and held a practice game against some of the alumni on Mar. 21 to prepare them for the upcoming season.

The practice game provided the girls an opportunity to get used to their new positions and allowed them to experience many game-like situations.

“We’re going to do good this season,” Carson said. “If we play like a team, we’ve got a chance at winning State.”

Once again the golf team will be hitting the course, starting off yet another season. Jeff Wilkerson will be returning as head coach this year and will have four returning players.

This year’s golf team is young so they will have to perform well in order to be able to attend the varsity meets.

“ I think it will be easy for me to do better than last year,” Callum Taylor, so., said.

Returning players are Bret Hauser, jr., and sophomores Matt Lafferty, Riley Herder, and Taylor. They all participated in varsity meets last year, but they did not place at any of them.

Returning players include seniors Thad Wells, Andrew Whitaker, Andy Honas, Troy Davis, Micah Poovey, and Billy Schomaker. Juniors Manbeck, Chris Coronado, Elijah Friederich, and Brett Heslop, along with sophomores Derrik McCall and Seth Nickell will also add leadership for the team’s newcomers.

Wells and Whitaker both received All-League honors last year, and Manbeck received honorable mention All-League.

“ We have a strong group of returning players,” Weilert said. “If we do what we are supposed to do and play like we are capable of playing, we will have a good year.”

The Cubs will be looking for a win against the Neodesha Bluestreaks at home Tuesday night for their first game of the season.

Winter sports athletes and parents attended the winter sports banquet Wednesday night. After eating the dinner, the awards for girls and boys basketball, cheerleading, and Scholars’ Bowl began to be distributed by their respective coaches.

For girl basketball, all of the girls on the team lettered. Seniors Kelci Owens and Lenzie Boring received first team All-League.

“ I am really excited,” Boring said. “All the hard work from the previous years paid off and was well worth it.”

Owens was a unanimous decision. She also received All-State honorable mention in Wichita, third team All-State in Topeka, and was ranked sixth in the state for scoring percentage.

The 2009 track team members have high expectations for their upcoming season as 12 returning runners, seven of which are seniors, join a large group of new members.

“ We have a large number of new athletes that will push our returning runners and compete for spots we have not been able to fill in the past,” Eric Carlson, head coach, said. “With a large senior group with good leaders, we should place well at each meet.”

Last year eight runners made it to State, and the team is planning on making more State appearances this year.

Five of last year’s State athletes are returning this year: Scott Sollars, sr., Andy Hill, sr., Malachi Melton sr., Cody Wright, jr., Jarred Barr, so., and Raquel Hill, so.

“ After making it to State two out of the past three years, I plan to make it to State again this year,” Sollars said. “We have a large team this year with a lot of good athletes; we will be able to push each other in practice and at the meets.”

In addition to returning members and underclassmen, two seniors, Devin Onnen and Rusty Olson, decided to run track for the first time their senior year.

“ I am running track this year so I can get into shape while having fun,” Olson said. “I also run track to be more involved during my last year of school.”

The first track meet will take place at Central Heights on Apr. 3 at 3 p.m.
