Sweetheart 2009 was eventful this year with spirit week and
the basketball games. The candidates were chosen, voted for, and participated
in the coronation
ceremony. Spirit week also proved exciting to many students.
The girls basketball team chose Josh Elder, Andy Hill, Micah Poovey, and
Scott Sollars as the king candidates. The boys basketball team chose Lenzie
Boring, Shelley Herder, Alana Kinzle, and Paige Murrell as the queen candidates.
Spirit Week was from Feb. 2-6. Monday was crazy hair day. On Tuesday, students
dressed in outfits from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, or ‘80s
for decades day. Nerd day was Wednesday, and Thursday was pajama day. On
Friday, the day of the Sweetheart game, students decked out for orange and
black day. The days were chosen by the cheerleaders.
“
I think spirit week is important because I get to dress up and have fun,” junior
Tiffany Zimmerman said.
Some students, however, choose to not dress up for spirit week.
“
I [do not dress up] because I don’t think you have to dress up to show
your full spirit,” Andrew Honas, sr., said.
Unfortunately both the girls and boys varsity teams lost to the Burlington
Wildcats on Friday night.
During half-time of the boys game, Boring and Sollars were announced Sweetheart
queen and king.
“
I think that it is good that Lenzie and Scott were chosen as king and queen,” Carrie
Cady, fr., said. “They are both athletes and are good people to represent
our school.”
Following the boys’ game was a dance for all high school students and
their dates. The dance was sponsored by StuCo.
“
I thought the dance was hilarious,” Shelley Herder, sr., said. “Especially
when the guys danced to ‘Sandstorm’ with glow sticks. It was
the best part of the dance.”
