Improved baseball team looks toward Regionals
By Randi Barnett, jr.
Sports Editor
This year’s baseball team has seen a better season than
in previous years.
With an 11-6 record overall, including 6-6 in league play, the team is in
position to finish as high as third in league.
Chase County is the first seed in Regionals, the Cubs are the second seed,
and Yates Center is the third.
Other teams in Humboldt’s Regionals are Altoona, Marmaton Valley, and
Herrington.
“I am ready for Regionals,” said Andrew Whitaker, jr. “I
think we could have a good chance of making it past the first round if we
stay focused and play like we know how to.”
The keys to success are hitting well as well as playing good defense.
“I expect us to play to our potential,” said Jeremy Weilert, head
coach. “We have a talented ball club when we put it all together.
If we play like we are capable we will give ourselves a chance to make it
to the state tournament.”

With a record of 17-2, the Lady Cubs softball team is looking
forward to important upcoming games; they will be playing in regionals at
Yates Center.
With a first-round bye, the Lady Cubs need to win two games in order to advance
to the State Tournament, which will be held at Emporia on May 23 and 24.
The Lady Cubs’ players and coaches are plenty motivated after losing
their first two games on the season Monday.
“Our team needs to get back on track,” said Brad Piley, head coach.
“The two losses from Caney should make us hungry and more focused for
regionals.”
League, State up next for
track members

While short on numbers, the Cubs’ track team has seen plenty of success
individually this season.
Several team members, like freshman Raquel Hill, have challenged school records,
and the runners, jumpers and throwers seem to be peaking at the right time.
With regionals coming up, Eric Carlson, head coach, expects at least six of
his athletes to qualify for State in Wichita on May 23rd and 24th.
“We have had a very successful season as individuals,” said Carlson.
“We do not have enough members to win team titles; however, we usually
placed in the top half for team standings.”
The Cubs have sent many members to State in the last few years.
Among those expected to contend for a state birth are seniors Sam Norris and
Sarah Works.
