Teams close out regular season with losses

It was a rough night all around for the Humboldt baseball and
softball teams on Monday.
The baseball team fell 1-2, 4-10 to Cherryvale while the softball dropped
its first games of the season, 3-7 and 1-9 to Caney.
Cherryvale pushed a single run across in the bottom of the seventh inning
to claim a narrow victory against the Cubs in the first game.

Uniontownon May 1. The Cubs only managed to get a little more than an inning
of
play in before the game was cancelled due to inclement weather.
“We need to work on getting better hits,” said Honas.
“And our communication between the players needs to get better.”
The Chargers followed it up with a 10-4 win, scoring six unanswered runs to
start the game.
Troy Davis, jr., and Whitaker each had two hits.
Experiencing their first losses of the season, the Lady Cubs
struggled against Caney.
Caney scored five times in the third and added insurance runs in the fifth
and sixth as it pulled off the upset in the first game.
Lenzie Boring, jr., took the loss, her first of the season. Callie Umholtz,
jr., had three hits and two RBIs.
In game two, Caney scored six runs in the fifth inning to break open a 1-3
game.

Winding Up!

two hits, with no walks and 12 strikeouts. The win moved the Lady Cubs’ record
to 17-0.
Boring took the loss once again.
“I don’t think we were ready mentally or physically,” said
Umholtz.
On May 1 the baseball team managed to get a little more than an inning of
play in against Uniontown before the game was cancelled. The softball team
managed to get one game in, posting a 6-0 victory in six innings.
Up 1-0 after one inning, the Lady Cubs scored four more runs in the third
inning and added one more in final inning of play.
Boring gave up two hits while walking none and striking out 12 in six innings.
Cubs, Lady Cubs down Eureka

Sweeping two wins from the Eureka Tornados, the Humboldt Cubs
baseball team defeated the Tornados 17-3 in the first game and 18-12 in the
second on April 28.
Andrew Whitaker, jr., picked up the win in the first game, allowing seven
hits, five strike outs and one walk in the five-inning game.
Whitaker was also the Cubs leading hitter in the game, going 3-for-5 with
a double and a triple.
Jacob Manbeck, so., also had a good night at the plate going 2-for-2.
In the second game, Humboldt jumped to a 8-1 lead after three innings behind
the pitching of Thad Wells, jr., who allowed one hit and struck out nine
before being relieved by Elijah Friederich, so., and Andy Honas, jr., the
next two innings.
Eureka got to Freiderich and Honas, scoring four runs in the fourth inning
and five in the fifth to take a 10-8 lead.
The Cubs scored four of their own in the bottom of the fifth, regaining the
lead. Up 12-10, the Cubs outscored Eureka 6-2 over the final two innings.

Lady Cubs picked up two big wins, 13-1 and 19-0.
Whitaker got the win by pitching the final two innings. Whitaker,
Wells, Friederich, and Phillip Vernon, sr., all had two hits for the Cubs.
The softball team blew away the Eureka Tornados on April 29, 13-1 and 19-0
in a pair of run-rule games.
Megan Dillow, jr., led the Cubs to their first win. In five innings in the
circle, she allowed two hits, one walk and nine strikeouts. Dillow also had
three singles, a triple, three stolen bases and two RBIs.
“
We hit the ball extremely well tonight,” said Brad Piley, softball
coach. “Our girls are playing with confidence.”

Callie Umholtz, jr., also had three hits, while Kelci Owens, jr., and Terra
Woods, sr., had two hits each.
“
I thought that we played really well,” said Umboltz. “We had
a lot of good hits and we played awesome defense.”
In the second game, Boring got the win, yielding one hit while walking one
and striking out seven. She also had a single, a triple and two RBIs.
Dillow had three singles, four stolen bases, and five RBIs. Following close
behind was Umholtz, Woods, and Tessa Coronado, sr., each with two singles.
Owens had one single and a double, three stolen bases and two RBIs.
Junior varsity softball splits with Yates Center Wildcats

Bouncing back from a loss in the first game, the Lady Cubs
regrouped to take the second game of a doubleheader against Yates Center
on April 28.
Yates Center took the first game 13-20, while the Lady Cubs won the second
game 8-5.
“
The first game was tough, but I feel like the team bounced back in the end,” said
Taylor Fitzmaurice, fr.
Amanda Maxton, fr., was a home run away from the cycle, hitting a single,
double and triple.

Brandi Malloy, fr., had an inside-the-park home run and Tessa Coronado, sr.,
tripled.
Melissa Davidson, fr., struggled with walks in the opener as she suffered
the loss.
Davidson came back strong in the second game, helping the Lady Cubs to the
split.
“ After our loss in the first game, we had to build our confidence back
up and figure out what mistakes we had to fix. The second game went much better,”
said Davidson, fr.
Maxton had two singles, while Coronado and Hali Dawson, sr., each tripled.
The junior varsity played at Iola on April 30. Results from those games were
not available.

Competing in Eureka, the junior varsity track team had a solid
showing on April 27.
Desiree Churning, so., led the girls track team, placing fifth in javelin.
For the boys, Tevin Strack, so., took first in the triple jump, jumping 35’7”.
He also placed second in the long jump with a jump of 16’3 1/2”.
“I think I was successful in my jumping events because I gave it my
all,” said Strack.
Jarred Barr, fr., placed first in the 1600m race with a time of 5 minutes,
19 seconds. Cody Wright, so., took third in the 1600m, finishing the race
with a time of 5:35.
“It felt good to win the 1600m.” said Barr. “It was my first
gold, but I was pretty tired after the race.”
Junior Nate Bartlett finished third in the 200m with a time of 26.03.
The relay teams also did well. The 4x400 team consisting of Nick Miller, so.,
Barr, Jock Wilson, fr., and Wright finished the relay with a time of 4:20,
placing second.
Miller, Wright, Wilson, and Strack made up the 4x100 team that placed fourth.
Their finishing time was 53.3.
“We could have placed better in our relay if we would have just tried
a little bit harder,” said Strack.
