Hill leads Cubs at Fredonia, Burlington

Freshman Raquel Hill stood out at track meets in both Fredonia and Burlington, placing first in the 1600-meter and 3200m in both meets, and finishing in the top five in the 800m.

The team traveled to Fredonia on April 18. Hill took first in the 1600m and 3200m and fifth in the 800m.

She was two seconds away from breaking the school record in the 3200 with a time of 12:46.76.

“It feels great to almost break the record, and I hope I do break it,” Hill said. “I am trying hard in practice and trying to eat non-greasy foods.”

Flying High!

Works broke her personal record on the jump with a leap of 14'6 1/2" and placed third.


Sarah Works, sr., also did well, placing second in the 100m hurdles and the 300m hurdles.

She also took sixth place in long jump with a distance of 13’10.5”.

“Fredonia has always been a big meet,” said Works. “I was happy with the outcome. Losing by .03 seconds was difficult; I guess I should have leaned forward a little more at the finish line.”

Junior Scott Sollars placed third in both the 300m hurdles and triple jump while Tevin Strack, so., placed fifth in triple jump and long jump.

Joab Barr, sr., placed second in the 3200m and fifth in the 1600m.

Andy Hill, jr., took third place in the 3200m and fourth in the 1600m.

He also placed fifth in the high jump competition.

Joab Barr, Jarred Barr, A. Hill, and Sollars took home a third place medal in the 4x800m relay.

Jarred Barr and Sollars, along with Strack and Nick Miller, so., took sixth place in the 4x400m relay.

The 4x100m relay team consisting of Miller, Joab Barr, Strack, and sophomore Kyle Warren placed fifth.

R. Hill dominated at Burlington on Tuesday, placing first in both the 1600m and the 3200m. She also took fourth place in 800m.

Senior Sam Norris took first place in long jump, second place in the 300m hurdles, and fourth in the 110m hurdles.

Junior Shelley Herder took sixth place in high jump while Works finished third in both long jump and 100m hurdles, and sixth in 300m hurdles.

Sollars placed second in both triple jump and the 400m race.

He also finished fifth in the 100m and 200m dashes.

Joab Barr received third place in the 3200m.

Placing third in high jump at the meet was A. Hill who also took fourth in the 3200m and fifth in the 1600m.

Strack placed fifth in triple jump.

Miller, Joab Barr, Strack, and Warren placed fourth in the 4x100m relay, and Jarred Barr, Ryan Heidrick, fr., Jock Wilson, fr., and Cody Wright, so., received fifth in the 4x800m relay.


Cubs, Lady Cubs fare well against Chargers

Tuesday night, the baseball and softball teams faced Cherryvale in a doubleheader.

The Cubs split the night with Cherryvale in two very high scoring games finishing with scores of 12-15 and 20-18.

After jumping on top 5-0 after one inning, the Cubs lost their big lead as Cherryvale rallied for the win.

“Cherryvale started slow but picked it up in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings,” said Jeremy Weilert, baseball coach. “We started the game as good as we have all year; it just wasn’t enough.”

Thad Wells, jr., went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and a home run. Jacob Manbeck, so., went 1-for-4 and hit a home run.

Throwing The Heat!

In the second game, the Cubs trailed by seven runs in the seventh inning but made an amazing comeback and scored seven runs to tie up the game and send it into extra innings.

Wells and Drake Tilman, sr., both went 5-for-6 at the plate.

The Lady Cubs (11-0, 7-0 TVL) defeated the Chargers in both games behind the pitching of Lenzie Boring, jr., who threw two shutouts, including a no-hitter in the second game.

“I just kept throwing hard, and it worked,” said Boring. “I didn’t do anything special, just threw a lot of fastballs.”

In game one, Humboldt led 3-0 after five innings and plated four more in the sixth, ending the game win a 7-0 victory.

Boring pitched a complete game shutout, allowing four hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts.

At the plate she was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs.

Megan Dillow, jr., went 3-for-4 . Kelci Owens, jr., had two hits.

In the second game, Boring no-hit the Chargers, walking one and striking out five.

“Cherryvale is a good quality team; we played well against them,” said Piley.

Humboldt broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the fifth. Behind Boring, the Lady Cubs’ defense held strong and completed the shutout.


Golf team struggles on tough Iola course

Senior Martey Hebeler led the Cubs with a 36th-place finish out of 79 other golfers at a meet at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Iola on April 21.

Hebeler shot a 100, on what proved to be a tough day for the Cubs. As a team the Cubs finished in 14th place on the course they practice on daily.

“I felt like we played decent at our home course but not as well as we should have,” said Hebeler.

Joining Hebeler and Hauser at the meet were sophomores Bret Hauser and Willie Headley, and freshmen Riley Herder and Callum Taylor.

“It was a hard course,” said Mary Hauser, so. “We weren’t really ready to play.”

Next up for the team is a meet at Neodesha on April 29.
