Playing in less than ideal conditions, the Cubs’ baseball and softball teams overcame the elements and claimed victory in the Walter Johnson Tournament and the Lindsay Friederich Memorial Softball Tournament, respectively.

The baseball team went 2-0 in the four-team tournament, defeating Yates Center 3-1 in the first game before rallying to beat Iola 5-4 for the tournament title.

It was the third year in a row the Cubs have won their home tournament.

“We came out hitting the ball really well,” said Troy Davis, jr. “We struggled against Iola a little bit but won the game in the end.”

Trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning against Iola, the Cubs pulled within one on a two-run single by Zach Cole, sr., and completed the comeback with two more runs in the sixth on a two-run single by Jacob Manbeck, so.

Manbeck went 2-for-3, while Andrew Honas, jr., finished 3-for-4 with a double.

Tournament. In thier second game, the Cubs came back from behind to beat Iola 5-4.

Phillip Vernon, sr., Cole, Davis and Drake Tilman, sr., all had one hit.

Andrew Whitaker, jr., picked up the win, allowing four runs on nine hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.

Against Yates Center, the Cubs scored a pair of runs in the first inning and added another on an RBI double by Vernon in the third inning.

Pitcher Thad Wells, jr., took care of the rest, allowing one run the rest of the way as he struck out 13 for the second time this season.

“Our first game against Yates Center could have easily gone either way,” Jeremy Weilert, baseball coach, said. “They limited us to eight base runners, but Thad pitched a great game.”

Manbeck, Vernon, Davis and Cole all had a hit.

In other games of the tournament Iola defeated Neodesha 4-1, and Yates Center beat Neodesha 6-3.

Like the baseball team, the Lady Cubs also went 2-0, run-ruling Neodesha 10-0 in five innings before defeating Iola in the championship game 2-0.

“The tournament went really well, and we kept our momentum up the whole time,” said Bailey Myers, jr. “We were pretty pumped because we accomplished one of our goals this year by beating Iola.”

Megan Dillow, jr., pitched a shutout for Humboldt against Neodesha, allowing one hit with three walks and five strikeouts.

On offense, Humboldt picked up five runs in the second inning, two in the fourth, and three in the fifth for the big win.

I was really excited to beat Neodesha,” said Kelci Owens, jr. “It gave us the opportunity to get back at Iola since they beat us last year.”

Owens was 2-for-3 with a double, four stolen bases, and three RBIs.

Terra Woods, sr., had one hit and stole one base.

Juniors Callie Umholtz and Randi Barnett each hit a single while Britany Sellman, sr., and Myers each managed one double. Sellman had two RBIs, and Myers had one.

The championship game of the tournament was much tighter. Scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, the Lady Cubs finally got on the board when Umholtz lined a two-run single.

The two runs was plenty of support for Lenzie Boring, jr., who pitched a two-hitter, walking none with eight strikeouts.

In other tournament action, Iola beat Yates Center 4-1, and Yates Center knocked off Neodesha 13-5.

Winning both ends of a doubleheader against the Yates Center Wildcats, the Lady Cubs brought home two 5-0 victories.

With 10 strikeouts, Lenzie Boring, jr., set the pace for the first game of the night.

Allowing one hit with no walks, Boring led the team defensively by shutting down the Wildcat’s offense, leaving the Lady Cubs ready to strike at bat.

During the sixth inning of the game, the Lady Cubs took advantage of their strong defense and scored five runs on the Wildcats.

Callie Umholtz, jr., picked up two RBIs with a single in the inning, and Boring had a two-run home run as the Lady Cubs pulled away.

In the circle for the second game of the night as well, Boring pitched a three-hit shutout with no walks and 10 strikeouts.

“Lenzie Boring pitched two great games that night,” said Brad Piley, head softball coach. “We hit the ball good against a very good pitcher.”

Umholtz had three hits for the Lady Cubs, who scored a run in the first, two in the third, and a run each in the fifth and sixth innings.

Bailey Myers and Kelci Owens, jrs., each had two hits.

Center catcher. The softball team won both games 5-0.

Splitting a doubleheader with the Wildcats, the baseball team won the second of the two games 6-2, but lost the first game 6-11.

In the win, the Cubs used a three-run third inning to push ahead of Yates Center 5-1.

Jacob Manbeck, so., hit a two-run triple. Manbeck later scored on a Drake Tilman, sr., sacrifice fly to center.

Striking out seven batters and allowing three hits, Andrew Whitaker, jr., picked up the victory on the mound.

In the loss, the Cubs hit the ball as well as they could but could not push the runners on through to score.

Pitching the first inning and most of the second, Thad Wells, jr., had three strikeouts, but allowed eight runs, four hits, and five walks.

Taking over for Wells midway through the second inning, Andy Honas, jr., had two strikeouts and allowed three runs, eight hits, and three walks.

On the offensive side, Troy Davis, jr., went 3-for-3 at the plate and Zach Cole had three hits out of four at bats.

“We hit that ball as well as we have all year, but we were not able to capitalize on those runners,” said Jeremy Weilert, head baseball coach. “We dug ourselves a hole in the second inning. We walked too many batters and committed too many errors.
“Yates Center took advantage of our mistakes. They hit the ball very well, and their pitcher kept us off balance the entire game.”

Rachel Green, jr., led the Cubs with an inside the park home run in the first inning and a double later in the game.

“It felt great to help out my team,” said Green. “I’m ready to hit some more home runs.”

The JV game scheduled for last night was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The JV baseball team’s season is over, due to a shortage of players.
