Cubs, Lady Cubs sweep home-opener

Sweeping a doubleheader at home from Burlington, the Cubs improved to 3-2 on the season on April 1.

The Cubs’ offense was on top of its game as the Cubs took the first game 11-4 before claiming the second game 10-0.

Leading the way offensively was Jacob Manbeck, so., who finished the doubleheader 5-for-7 at the plate.

After hitting no homeruns a season ago, the Cubs hit three homers in the doubleheader. Thad Wells, jr., hit two, and Drake Tilman, sr., hit one.

“To hit two in one game and three in the doubleheader is great,” said Jeremy Weilert, head coach. “Drake and Thad hit them to dead center.”

The Cubs rallied from a 1-3 deficit in game one, scoring two runs in the second inning to tie the game and four runs each in the fourth and sixth innings as they pulled away with the victory.

Wells got the win for the Cubs, giving up three runs with five strikeouts and six walks in four innings.

Andrew Whitaker, jr., closed the game by striking out the side in the seventh.

The Cubs jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second game and blew the Wildcats away with an eight-run third inning.

Wells and Tilman each had homeruns in the third inning.

Whitaker pitched all five innings in the run ruled shortened game, striking out five with one walk.
Softball wins two.

Staying undefeated, the Lady Cubs smoked the Burlington Wildcats 6-0 and 12-2.

Lenzie Boring, jr., picked up two wins in the circle. In the two games, Boring allowed a combined two runs on six hits with 14 strikeouts and one walk in 12 innings.

“In the first game we hit the ball better than the stats show,” Brad Piley, softball head coach, said. “We hit hard shots right to their defense.”

Callie Umholtz, jr., had two of the Lady Cubs’ six hits and two RBIs in the first game.

Kelci Owens, jr., and seniors Terra Woods, Katie Manbeck, and Staci Collins all had a single and a stolen base.

Megan Dillow, jr., ended the first game with a double and two stolen bases. Bailey Myers, jr., had a triple, one stolen base, and two RBIs.

In the second game Woods, had two hits including an inside the park grand slam in the third inning.

Owens and Dillow also had two hits. Dillow finished the game with six stolen bases and Owens followed with three.

They each also had one RBI.

Boring, Woods, Manbeck, and Myers all ended the second game with a single.

The baseball and softball games at Eureka scheduled for Tuesday were postponed until April 23 due to the weather.


Teams dominate at Erie

.The Lady Cubs softball team had a pair of lop-sided victories, run ruling both teams it played on March 27.

Uniontown was the first team the Lady Cubs crushed, winning 14-1 after five innings of play.

Megan Dillow, jr., pitched the first game and had seven strikeouts.

“It was a fantastic win, and we played hard to get it,” said Manbeck.

The Lady Cubs stomped the Red Devils in their second game of the night, ending after three innings with a score of 29-1.

“I have never had a team hit the ball so hard for two games,” said Brad Piley, softball head coach. “We had 18 girls have hits in the two games.”

Lenzie Boring, jr., was a single away from a cycle, and Katie Manbeck, sr., was a home run away from a cycle.

The Cubs baseball team also had a successful night, defeating Uniontown 21-8 after six long innings.

“I thought we were much more disciplined at the plate,” said Jeremy Weilert, baseball head coach.

The team was scheduled to play the Erie Red Devils following their game with Uniontown; however, the game had to be rescheduled.

Honas was 6-for-6 from the plate, while Jacob Manbeck, so., was 4-for-5.

“I kept my eye on the ball and stayed disciplined at the plate,” said Andrew Honas, jr. “It felt good [to beat Uniontown].”


JV season off to rocky start due to weather

The junior varsity baseball and softball teams have gotten off to a slow start as a result of game postponements and cancellations due to inclement weather.

The JV baseball team has yet to play a game as their match-ups against Chanute on April 7 and yesterday’s games against Erie were called off due to rain.

The game at Chanute has been rescheduled for April 24.

The Lady Cubs were able to squeeze in a makeup game against Neodesha on April 1.

Humboldt lost the first game 1-10 and fell in the second 6-14.

“We did okay [against Neodesha], but we still have a lot to accomplish,” said Melissa Davidson, fr.

The games scheduled for April 3 at Iola and yesterday’s game against Erie have not been rescheduled at this point
