Struggling in their first golf tournament of the year, the Cubs
placed last in Burlington on March 1.
Martey Hebeler led the team placing 14th out of 71 golfers with a round of
88.
“I played well at Burlington; the conditions were pretty windy,”
said Hebeler. “I felt the young golfers played well for some of their
first tournaments, but there is room for improvements.”
Five other Humboldt golfers, sophomores Bret Hauser and Mary Hauser, and freshmen
Riley Herder, Willie Headley, and Callum Taylor, also attended the meet.

B. Hauser placed 47th and Riley Herder placed 52nd.
For their second meet the Cubs traveled to Erie.
Once again Hebeler led the team placing second with a round of 40 on a nine-hole
course.
Placing behind Hebeler were B. Hauser, with a total of 59 points, Herder,
with 63 points, and Matt Lafferty, fr., with an 83.
The junior varsity golf team was scheduled to attend a meet in Erie on April
8, but it was postponed due to rain.

With many absences due to the State Weightlifting Meet, the
track team went to the Central Heights meet short handed.
“I feel we did pretty well, but we could always improve,” said
Andy Hill, jr.
Placing fifth in the 3200-meter and fourth in the 1600m, Hill was the main
point scorer for the Cubs. He also placed fifth in the 4x800m relay along
with Daniel Weilert, sr., Matt Smith, jr., and Cody Wright, so. Also placing
in the 1600m was Joab Barr, sr., who obtained fifth place.
The boys team earned 10th place out of 12 teams while the girls team earned
12th.
The only person to place for the girls team, Raquel Hill, fr., placed sixth
in the 3200m and the 1600m.
The team traveled to Eureka on Apr. 3.
Placing first in the 3200m was R. Hill. She also placed second in the 1600m,
and fourth in the 800m.
Sarah Works, sr., took second place in both the 100m hurdles and the 300m
hurdles and fourth in long jump.
Barr placed third in the 3200m, while Scott Sollars, jr., took third in the
300m hurdle. Barr and Sollars also placed second in a 4x800m relay with A.
Hill and Jarred Barr, fr.
Rounding off the placers were Chris Winner, jr., took fifth place in the 110m
hurdle, and A. Hill, placing sixth in the 3200m.

A meet in Jayhawk-Linn scheduled for Tuesday had to be postponed
until Wednesday due to bad weather. Although the meet was called off early,
Humboldt still had three first-place finishes.
In the girls’ division, R. Hill took first place in the 1600m while
Desiree Churning, fr., took sixth place in javelin.
Joab Barr achieved a personal best, as well as a gold medal, with a 10:58
finish in the 3200m. He also placed third in the 1600m.
“There is no better feeling than getting first place,” said Joab
Barr. “My goal is to beat the mile record and possibly the 2-mile record.
I would also like to go to State again.”
A. Hill placed first in the 1600m and third in the 3200m.
Sollars took second place in the 300m intermediate hurdles.
Winner placed third in both 110m hurdles and 300m intermediate hurdles.
Cory Henshall, so., took fifth place in long jump, while Kyle Warren, so.,
finished sixth in the 100m dash.
Eric Maxson, jr., placed sixth in javelin.
A 4x100m relay team including Warren, Henshall, Nick Miller, so., and Nate
Barlett, jr., took third place. Sollars, Jarred Barr, and freshmen Jock Wilson
and Ryan Heidrick placed sixth in the 4x800m relay.
Lady Cubs prevail, boys fall at Neody

Bringing home two big wins, the Lady Cubs defeated Neodesha
9-4 and 9-5 on March 25.
Megan Dillow, jr., allowed four runs on three hits, four walks and four strikeouts.
Kelci Owens jr., had a single, a triple and two RBIs. Callie Umholtz jr.,
had two singles, a triple, and four RBIs. Lenzie Boring jr., had a double
and three RBIs.
In game two, Boring gave up a hit, a walk and struck out 11.
At the plate Boring had two singles, a triple and seven RBIs.
“Megan and Lenzie pitched well for their first outing. Our defense had
some errors that we need to clean up,” said Brad Piley, head softball
coach.
In the second game, Boring paced the offense with two singles,
one triple and seven RBIs.
The Cubs baseball team was not as fortunate, dropping a pair of extra inning
games.
In the opener the Cubs fell 4-6 and lost the second game 8-9.
Thad Wells, jr., carried the Cubs with 13 strikeouts but allowed nine hits
and three walks.

In the second game Manbeck had a two-run single. Wells had a triple and two
singles.
