A loss in the Sub-State championship game to St. Mary’s
Colgan ended the Cubs’ season and the high school basketball careers
of their four seniors inlcuding Zach Cole, Sam Norris, Devin Myers and Drake
Tilman.
Battling until the end, the Cubs lost 39-50 to the Panthers, who went on to
win the Class 2A State Championship. With the loss, the Cubs finished the
season 21-2, including a perfect record in Tri-Valley League play.
“We had two starters back from last year, and the underclassmen stepped
up a lot and proved a lot of people wrong that had doubts about how well we
would do,” said Cole. “21-2 is still a very good record.”

The Cubs went on to lose to Colgan 39-50.
Down 32-38 heading into the fourth quarter, the Cubs saw Colgan employ an
effective stall offense that left the them on defense for the majority of
the quarter. Forced to foul, Humboldt sent Colgan to the free throw line 12
times in the fourth quarter, where the Panthers hit 10 freebies.
“We had too many turnovers at the start of the game,” said Cole.
“I think it was mainly because we were too pumped up, and we were going
too fast.”
Cory Henshall, so., led Humboldt with 12 points in the loss.
Before reaching the championship game, Humboldt defeated the Yates Center
Wildcats 57-56 on Feb. 9 in the second round of Sub-State.
Led by Norris, who scored nine of his game-high 29 points in the fourth, Humboldt
made enough plays down the stretch to secure the win and move them on to the
Sub-State championship game.
Seventeen years had passed without the Humboldt girls basketball team appearing
in the championship game of a Sub-State tournament.
By defeating Oswego 58-48 on Feb. 28 in the semi-final round, the Lady Cubs
changed that and earned a spot in the championship game against St. Mary’s
Colgan on Mar. 1, where they fell 48-64.
Against Colgan, Humboldt came out strong in the first quarter, leading 19-16.
Colgan came back in the second and led 26-37 at halftime. Colgan maintained
its double digit lead, 37-47, heading into the fourth where the Lady Cubs
fought hard but were defeated 48-64.

“I wasn’t disappointed,” said coach Jeff Wilkerson.
“The girls gave it all they had. You can’t cry about what has
already happened. What we need to do is get better. Then we can get Colgan
next time.”
Kelci Owens, jr., led Humboldt with 23 points.
Terra Woods, sr., and Randi Barnett, jr., just missed out on scoring double
figures, finishing with nine and eight points, respectively.
To reach the title game, the Lady Cubs had no trouble dispensing of Oswego
in a 58-48 victory.
Woods led the Lady Cubs with a career-high 26 points. Barnett followed with
13 points.
“It felt really good to score as much as I did,” said Woods. “I
felt like I had the chance to step up and be a leader, and I took it.”
The Lady Cubs ended their season with a record of 12-11.
Seniors on the team were Woods, Adrienne Gutierrez and Sarah Works..
With Spring just around the corner, returning head coach Eric
Carlson and first-year coach Robert Myers are looking forward to a successful
track and field season.
“I think we have some great athletes this year that work hard,”
said Myers. “I believe that if they work hard, we will have a very successful
year. I’m looking forward to going to the track meets and watching the
kids compete.”
Two returning seniors on the track team qualified for State last year. Sarah
Works qualified for the 300 meter hurdles and Sam Norris qualified for the
300 meter intermediate hurdles.
Ten of the returning members were letter winners from last season.
Expectations are high from both the coaches and the athletes.
“I’m looking forward to competing against kids from the other
schools,” said Cody Cramer, so, who participates in throwing events.
“My goal is to make it to at least Regionals for one of my throwing
events.”
The team is working hard to have a successful season and hopefully make it
past Regionals and into State.
“We practice every day after school to work on our conditioning and
practicing the techniques involved in each event,” said Carlson..

Another Spring brings another golf season. This year the team
will be coached by Jeff Wilkerson who is returning as head coach after a
year off from golf.
Led by two-time state qualifier Martey Hebeler, sr., the Cubs golf team
is ready to get back on the range and start another season.
Hebeler qualified for State as a freshman at Colony-Crest and finished 23rd
last year. As a senior, he wants to go out with a bang.
“I want to place in a lot more meets and do better at State,”
said Hebeler. “I think Coach Wilkerson will have some good constructive
criticism for the team.”
Joining Hebeler on the team are returning sophomores Bret Hauser and Mary
Hauser, along with first-year players Chas Wille, sr., and freshmen Riley
Herder and Matt Lafferty.
For his part, Hebeler is ready to step into a leadership role for the younger
competitors on the team.
“Out on the (driving) range, I’ll just talk to them on the side
and give them some tips,” said Hebeler.
The newcomers on the team have Wilkerson preparing for his coaching role.
“I look forward to watching these young players improve throughout
the year,” Wilkerson said.
The team will compete in seven tournaments throughout the season, not including
League, Regionals, and State. The season will tee off in Erie on March 31
for the first tournament.
