Sparked by an outstanding defensive effort in the third quarter, the Cubs overcame a sloppy first half and posted a 61-52 victory against Fredonia on Feb. 19.

The Cubs trailed 10-15 after the opening quarter and 27-29 at halftime before finally getting on track in the second half by outscoring Fredonia 15-5 in the third quarter.

“It was an ugly game, but I was real pleased with how the boys pulled together and showed enthusiasm in the third quarter,” said Dave Taylor, head coach.

The varsity boys won the game with a final score of 61-52. Cole ended the game with 13 points.

The big quarter gave the Cubs the lead 42-33 heading into the fourth quarter, where the two teams played to a 19-19 tie.
Cory Henshall, so., led the Cubs with a game-high of 21 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Zach Cole, sr., added 13, while Sam Norris, sr., and Tevin Strack, so., each scored nine.

With the win, the Cubs finished the regular season with a 19-1 record, including a 14-0 record in Tri-Valley League play.
“It feels great to finish the season at 19-1, but the real goal is to make it to State,” said Strack. “We aren’t going to be able to have mental lapses against the teams we face next. If we do, we could lose and lose our goal.”

The Cubs are the top seed in the Humboldt Sub-State tournament.

“Our goal for the whole season has been to get to the State tournament,” said Taylor. “We have been preparing all season long; so we hope to play well, play together and reach our goal.”

In their final regular season game, the Lady Cubs’ struggle continued, falling to Fredonia 49-52 in overtime.

The team lost five of their last six games heading into Sub-State play, but at 10-10 earned the second seed.

“Humboldt has as good a chance as any team in this Sub-State to win the championship,”said Jeff Wilkerson, head coach.

“[The girls] have to decide if they want to play under control, stay out of foul trouble and work hard enough to go to State.”

After falling behind 9-12 at the conclusion of the first quarter, the Lady Cubs stormed back to take a 22-19 lead at the half.

The two teams played almost even in the third quarter, and the Lady Cubs entered the fourth with a 33-29 advantage.

Junior Kelci Owens scored eight of her 17 points in the fourth quarter, but foul trouble began to plague the Lady Cubs.

Fredonia outscored Humboldt by four in the fourth quarter, thanks in part to a late 3-pointer that sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, Humboldt failed to regroup after surrendering the lead, and Fredonia pulled out the three-point win to defeat the Lady Cubs after a hard-fought overtime.

“I thought that we all played hard and just fell short of a close win when they hit a lucky three to send it into overtime,” said Megan Dillow, jr.

A three-game stretch in Tri-Valley League play at the beginning of February was a good one for the Cubs as they collected wins over Yates Center, Caney and Burlington.

Close until the fourth, the Cubs pulled a big win from the Yates Center Wildcats 53-44 on Feb 8.

Contributing 20 to the Cubs final score was Cory Henshall, so. Following was Zach Cole, sr., with 14.

Cole and Henshall each had seven offensive/defensive rebounds. Henshall ended the game with eight blocks.

“It was a tough game against Yates Center,” said Henshall. “But we still played hard in the second half to come up with a win.”

On Feb. 5, the Cubs dominated the Caney Bullpups 71-31.

“The team did well when we played Caney. We played tough defense and got easy buckets at the offensive side.” said Thad Wells, jr. “We just need to keep working hard at practice in order to get to the next level so that we can make a trip to Manhattan [for State] baby.”

Move Over!

Six points shy of out scoring Caney’s entire team was Henshall with 25. Following was Sam Norris, sr., with 17 and Cole with 15.

Henshall ended the game with four dunks.

The Cubs took a close win away from the Burlington Wildcats, 56-49 on Feb. 1.

The boys outscored the Wildcats 32-23 in the first half. The Cats made a run in the third, pulling to within a point.

Cole fouled out in the fourth adding tension to the already intense game, but the Cubs managed to pull out the seven-point victory.

“I thought it was a good game for us to get prepared for State.” said Tevin Strack, so. “We played okay but not great.”

Leading the way offensively for the Cubs was Henshall with 19 points, Cole followed close behind with 16.

Norris ended with 13. Dumping in six was Strack.

In the Lady Cubs’ first three games of February, the team went 1-2, losing games to Burlington and Caney before rebounding with a victory over rival Yates Center.

Against the Burlington Wildcats on Feb. 1, a two-point second quarter doomed the Lady Cubs in a 33-45 loss.

Starting strong, the Cubs jumped out to a 12-9 lead after one quarter.

The disastrous second quarter turned the team’s three-point first quarter lead into a 14-25 halftime deficit.

The Lady Cubs cut the lead down to eight points, 27-35, entering the fourth, but Burlington held strong for the 12-point win.

Another rough second quarter cost the Lady Cubs the game against Caney in a 38-55 defeat.

Holding the Bullpups to 10 points in the first quarter, the Lady Cubs defense flopped in the second, allowing Caney to score an additional 18 points and take a 17-28 halftime lead.

Closing the gap to eight points, the Lady Cubs managed to bump their score to 30 at the end of the third quarter, but only scored an additional eight points in the fourth. Again, lacking defensive motivation, the Lady Cubs fouled their way into another loss.

The Bullpups hit 10 of 14 free throw shots resulting in their 17-point lead for a win.

“We should have ran through our plays and given them time to work,” said Megan Dillow, jr.

Pulling out a win in their third game of the month, the Lady Cubs defeated the Yates Center Wildcats 52-49.

Trailing by one in the first quarter, the Lady Cubs put a strong defense to good use and kept the Wildcats’ offense thwarted.

The Lady Cubs’ defense lagged in the second, and Yates Center took a 21-30 halftime lead.

Coming out strong for the second half, the team pushed ahead of the Wildcats to grasp a five-point lead in the third.

The Lady Cubs fought a tough fight in the fourth to keep the lead and win the game by three points.

“We never play the first half; we come out to play in the second half,” said Randi Barnett, jr. “We need to fix not playing to our potential in the first half and play consistently throughout the entire game.”.
