After two quarters in their first Sub-State game against Northeast Arma on Monday, the Lady Cubs found themselves up by just five points against the seventh-seeded Northeast Arma Vikings.

Allowing only three points in the crucial third quarter, Humboldt built a 17-point lead going into the fourth quarter and soared to a 60-44 victory.

“We played really tough defense in the third quarter and picked a lot of their passes,” said Randi Barnett, jr. “That allowed us to get a lot of fast breaks and Northeast got tired really quickly, so they got lazy with their passes.”

Owens came out on fire and achieved a game-high 33 points, 23 of those occurring in the first half. She helped the Lady Cubs to a 14-10 lead after one quarter and a 32-27 lead at halftime.

“We worked the ball around, and I was just in the right place at the right time,” said Owens. “It made myself and my team more confident.”

Following Owens in double figures was Lenzie Boring, jr., with 11 points.

With the win, the Lady Cubs advance to the Sub-State semifinals where they will face Oswego (9-12) at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Humboldt.

“I think we can keep up our momentum if we work together, run through our plays, and push the ball down the floor,” said Owens.

On a night when every player on the team scored, the Cubs cruised to a win against Pleasanton in their first round Sub-State game Tuesday night.

Right from the get-go the Cubs tore up the court. Led by Cory Henshall, so., with his game-high 20 points, Humboldt slaughtered Pleasanton 69-40.

“I thought we played pretty well for the first part,” said Sam Norris, sr., who finished with nine points.

The Cubs led 22-11 after one quarter and continued to roll in the second, taking a 42-18 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, Zach Cole, sr., scored eight of his 13 points as Humboldt built its lead to 55-26 heading into the fourth quarter.

“We rebounded really well, and our transitions were great,” said David Taylor, head coach.

With Humboldt’s reserve players in the game for the fourth quarter, both teams played to a 14-14 tie.

The win moves the Cubs (20-1) into the Sub-State semifinals where they will face the Yates Center Wildcats (16-5) tomorrow night at 7:30.

Humboldt has played Yates Center twice this season, winning both games, including a 53-44 victory in their last matchup on Feb. 8.

“I am very confident in playing Yates Center again,” said Thad Wells, jr. “We just need to keep running through our offense and put good defensive pressure on them, and we should come out with a win.”

A flurry of activities off the court did little to distract the Cubs on the court as they earned a pair of victories on Feb. 14 and 15.

On Parents’ Night the Cubs rolled to a 61-46 win against Cherryvale.

They followed it up with a 57-21 dismantling of Eureka for Sweetheart.

Against Cherryvale, Zach Cole, sr., led a balance scoring attack with 21 points, while sophomores Tevin Strack and Cory Henshall added 13 apiece.

The game was tight through the first three quarters. It was tied 12-all after one quarter.

In the second, the Cubs built a slight 32-30 lead and increased it to 41-38 after three quarters.

Making a living at the free throw line, the Cubs outscored Cherryvale 20-8 in the fourth quarter, turning a three-point game into a comfortable victory.

There was no need for a fourth-quarter rally against Eureka. The Cubs led from start to finish as they picked up a dominating win.

Henshall finished with 22 points, outscoring Eureka single-handedly.

“It felt good to score high,” said Henshall. “But more importantly, it felt better to get the ‘W.’

Thad Wells, jr., added 11 points for the Cubs who had all 11 roster players score.
