Ladies defeat Vikings for title

Sweeping through the Pleasanton Tournament and taking the Championship title, the Lady Cubs defeated the Central Heights Vikings 45-30.

Against the Vikings, the Lady Cubs led 20-16 at halftime before coming out of the locker room ready to rumble. They outscored the Vikings 17-6 in the third quarter.

“It was great that we accomplished what Humboldt has not done in a while. We won both of our tourneys which was our goal,” said Lenzie Boring, jr.

The two teams played evenly in the fourth quarter and the Lady Cubs took home the 45-30 victory.

Kelci Owens, jr., was the leading scorer for the Lady Cubs, finishing the game with 21 points. She was five-for-five from the three-point range, hitting three in a row in the third quarter.

“It felt good to be the high scorer,” said Owens. “But it felt even better to win the game.”

Boring added eight, Megan Dillow, jr., added five, while Adrienne Gutierrez, sr., and Terra Woods, sr., each dropped in four.

In earlier action the Lady Cubs defeated the Pleasanton Blue Jays 68-50 and moved into the second round where they knocked off Uniontown 46-41.

Leading the team was Owens with 19. Following Owens was Boring with seven, and Barnett with six.


Championship game ends in loss

In the second round of the Pleasanton Tournament, the Cubs faced the Uniontown Eagles.

Senior Sam Norris led the team by scoring 16 points. Senior Zach Cole followed closely behind with 15. Cory Henshall, so., contributed 13 points, Drake Tilman, sr., put up eight. Thad Wells, jr., and Tevin Strack, so. both scored four points.

Tyler Gean, so., added two points and Josh Elder, jr., rounded out the scoring with one point.

The Cubs dominated the game with a final score of 63-37.

Once again the Cubs played in the championship game of a tournament. The Crest Lancers were their competition for first place.

Henshall led the team with 16 points. Cole and Strack each scored nine points and Norris made six points.

Leading in assists was Norris with three. Cole and Henshall were directly behind with two assists each.

Cole, Norris, and Henshall pulled down two rebounds each.

The Cubs were defeated with a final score of 39-63, placing second in the tournament.

“We could have done much better if we would have boxed out and would not have given up in the third and fourth quarters,” said Henshall.


Girls blow away Tornadoes

After snatching a series of victories and a first-place finish in the Pleasanton Mid-Season Tourney, the Lady Cubs were eager to follow up with a win against the Eureka Tornadoes on Jan. 22.

Led by junior Kelci Owens who scored 20 points, the Lady Cubs did just that as they pulled away in the second half for a 48-33 win on the road against the Tornadoes.

After the teams played to a tie at the end of the first and second quarters, the Lady Cubs went up by three heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, the Lady Cubs continued to pull away, out-scoring the Tornadoes 19-7 as they secured the 15-point victory.

“We did well beating Eureka down the floor and making the open shots,” said Owens. “We ran fast breaks well and were able to make a lot of lay ups.”

Senior Terra Woods and junior Randi Barnett each scored seven points. Juniors Megan Dillow and Lenzie Boring added six and five points, respectively.


JV gains experience in varsity blowout

Once again the boys racked up another win, defeating the Eureka Tornadoes, Jan 22. Ending halftime with a score of 44-11 the Cubs had all hope of putting this game away.

In the second half the team’s junior varsity got some playing time. Ending the third 62-13 and the game 66-20.

Leading the Cubs was Zach Cole, sr., with 26.

“Coach always says, ‘He who runs gets to score,’ and in this game I was up the floor, and my teammates gave up the ball, and I got some easy buckets,” said Cole.

Behind Cole was Cory Henshall, so. Henshall ended the game with 16 points. Adding eight was Drake Tilman, sr. And adding four was Josh Elder, jr., along with Tevin Strack and Tyler Gean, sos. Throwing in two were Sam Norris, sr., and Devin Onnen, so.

“Our starters played the first half, jumped up on them and got a pretty big lead. The JV played the entire second half,” said Coach Brad Piley. “We played good overall.”
