Playing their second home game against the Yates Center Wildcats on Jan. 4 and competing at Cherryvale on Jan. 11, the varsity boys took home two more wins, adding to their perfect record.

The Cubs started off the Yates Center game with a great lead and ended the first half 30-11.

They stayed ahead the rest of the game and ended it with a final score of 62-32.

Zach Cole, sr., led the team in points with 20, followed closely behind by Cory Henshall, so. with 19 points.

“The Yates Center game went really well,” said Henshall. “We came out fired up because we were not going to let them beat us three times in a row. We always work well together as a team, and I think we are going to keep winning all the way to State.”

The boys JV game ended in an unfortunate loss against the Chargers with a score of 25-43.

Devin Onnen, jr., led in points with 11, and Chris Coronado, fr., contributed eight points.

“We have a really young JV team this year including a lot of freshmen, but we usually play against juniors,” said Brad Piley, assistant coach. “We need to work on ball handling and shooting, but they are learning and improving.”

Starting off the Cherryvale game were seniors Devin Myers, Cole, and Sam Norris, junior Thad Wells, and Henshall.

The team had a slow start and were behind at the end of the first quarter, but they came back ready to go in the second quarter and ended the half with a score of 34-31.
The second half went even better, and the Cubs ended the game with a score of 80-60.

Leading in points that game was Norris with 35 total points.

“I thought that the game was very ugly at times, but the boys played well enough to get a win,” said David Taylor, head coach. “I was very pleased with the second half. I didn’t think the first half was that great, but they made up for it in the second.”

The JV game, however, did not go as well, and the boys ended the game with a loss and a score of 30-55.

Derrik McCall, fr., led in points with a total of 15, followed by Onnen with 13.

“Our shooting has improved dramatically, and we are working more as a team and finding the open man,” said Onnen.

The next league game for the varsity and junior varsity teams will be Jan. 22 at Eureka.

Boring also led in rebounds with seven for the night. Woods pulled down three rebounds while senior Sarah Works, Dillow, and Callie Umholtz, jr., each brought down two. Barnett rounded out the group with one rebound in the game.

Owens made the most steals with four, closely followed by Works with three. Barnett made two steals and Dillow, Boring, and Umholtz each had one.

The junior varsity team played after the varsity game was finished.

On Jan. 11, the Lady Cubs traveled to Cherryvale to play the Chargers.

The junior varsity started out the night by playing a two quarter game.

Barnett was the leading scorer with eight points. Boring added three points and Raquel Hill, fr., added two.

In the first quarter the Lady Cubs scored 10 points, and they scored three in the second. The final score was 13 points for the Cubs and 17 for Cherryvale.

“We keep trying no matter what,” said Mary Hauser, so. “We learn from our mistakes and try hard. I like that we learn to work as a team and become better basketball players.”

Varsity play directly followed the JV game.

Woods and Owens were the leading scorers, each putting 14 points on the board. Boring added five points, Dillow made three points, and Adrienne Gutierrez, sr., and Barnett both had two points.

“We needed to make better passes and not miss the easy shots,” said Woods. “The game might have gone downhill because we rushed a lot of plays and didn’t take enough time when working the ball around. Again, the passing killed us. We knew they were going to be tough. People have their doubts, but we can still beat them next time.”

Junior Lenzie Boring led the team by scoring seven points. She was followed closely by Kelci Owens, jr., who contributed six points.

Adding two points each were freshmen Raquel Hill and Melissa Davidson, along with juniors Megan Dillow and Callie Umholtz.
“Our first game went well,” said Hill. “We played very hard.”

The Lady Cubs placed second in the tournament. Placing first at the tournament were Burlington Wildcats.

“I think we played well for the most part,” said Alexis Hosack, so., “but during the game against Burlington, our defense did not do a very good job of keeping them from scoring.”

Leading the Cubs was once again Boring with 12 points, followed by Umholtz with four and Owens with three. Adding two was Davidson.

“Our last game we did not do as well, we need to practice on rebounding from underneath the basket as soon as someone takes a shot. We need to shoot more when we are open and work more as a team,” said Hill.

Following this tournament the team looks forward to the rest of its season with high hopes for success.

“The JV girls are working hard in practice, and it is definitely showing. They have grown as players by becoming better. The girls have also become stronger as a team,” said Amy Dawson , JV coach.
