In the first game of the Pleasanton Tournament, the Cubs faced
off against the Northeast Vikings.
The game started off with the scores tied in the first quarter, 12 to 12.
In the second quarter the Cubs improved their scoring by putting up 16 points
and holding their competition to 10 points.
Once again the Cubs scored 16 points in the third quarter of the game and
only let the Vikings score seven.
The scores were close in the fourth quarter with the Cubs making 13 points
and the Vikings 11.
Cory Henshall, so., led the team in scoring with 23 points overall, his highest
yet for this season. Zach Cole, sr., contributed 14 points, Josh Elder, jr.,
put up nine points. Sam Norris, sr., scored eight points, and Tevin Strack,
so., rounded out the scoring with five points.
“I think the team works well together,” said Strack. “We
are all pretty close and are all good friends. We are doing great since this
is our first year playing together as a team.”
Henshall also led in rebounds with nine for the night. Norris pulled down
seven rebounds, Cole six. Thad Wells, jr., made two rebounds while Elder and
Strackgrabbed one rebound each.

Sophomore Tevin Strack charges around
a Vikings defender in attempt to score in
the first game of the Pleasanton Tournament. Strack scored five points in
the game.
“It felt good to score 23 points in the first game of
the tournament,” said Henshall. “Defensive intensity helped us
win the game along with doing what Coach Taylor taught us to do instead of
doing our own thing.”
Henshall blocked five shots and Cole blocked one shot attempt from the Vikings.
Cole had the most assists with five. Wells followed close behind with four.
Norris, Elder, and Henshall had three assists each.
Strack stole the ball two times. Henshall, Wells, and Cole each made one steal.
“The team needs to improve on shooting, working the ball around to get
more open looks and make easier shots,” said Wells.
The Cubs played the Uniontown Eagles last night, but the results were at available
at press time.
“It would help us to move around without the ball and no matter who
we are playing, don’t come out of the locker room flat,” said
Strack.
Depending on the outcome of the game the Cubs will play at 6 p.m. if they
lose, and if they win, they will play at 7:30 p.m. in the Championship game.
“I think that the team’s chances at winning the tournament are
extremely high,” said Wells. “We have to play together as a team
and not let up on defense.”
Defeating the Pleasanton Bluejays, the Lady Cubs brought home
their first win from the Pleasanton tourney on Jan. 15. The score at the end
of the fourth quarter was 68-50.
“I think we played better than we did in the previous three games. We
could have played better; we had too many errors,” said Jeff Wilkerson,
head coach. “However, we worked as a team and ran through our offenses.”
Leading the Lady Cubs in points and breaking her personal record for a single
game this season was junior Kelci Owens with 25 points.
“It felt good to be the high scorer, but it felt even better to win
the game,” said Owens. “I think that the team played a lot better
than we have in the previous games. We had a lot of steals and fast breaks
which helped us win the game.”
Following Owens was Lenzie Boring, jr., with 15. Adding to the team’s
final score was junior Randi Barnett with nine, Sarah Works, sr., with five,
Megan Dillow, jr., with four, also contributing four were seniors Adrienne
Gutierrez and Terra Woods. Adding the last two points of the game was freshman
Melissa Davidson, scoring her first points in a varsity competition.

Senior Terra Woods looks for an open
teamate to pass the ball to in the first round
of the Pleasanton Tournament. The Lady Cubs won the game with a final score
of 68-50.
“The feeling was awesome when I scored for the first time
in a varsity game,” said Davidson.
The Lady Cubs had numerous steals and fast breaks to help them secure the
win against Pleasanton.
“I think that we played much better as a team and we worked together
to work the ball around and get open looks,” said Barnett. “Once
we stopped forcing the ball in and played aggressive defense the momentum
of the game changed dramatically.”
The Lady Cubs played the Uniontown Eagles last night, but the results were
not available at press time. Pending the outcome of last night’s games,
the team will either play Jayhawk Lynn or Central Heights tomorrow.
The Championship game will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the game for third
place at 7:30 p.m.
“I think if we play hard, and run through our plays we will have a good
chance of winning the tournament. The team plays well together so we should
come out on top,” said Owens.
