The Cubs faced the Burlington Wildcats last Friday for the first home basketball game of the season. After two losses to the Wildcats last year, the Cubs were more than ready to taste victory.

The first quarter ended with the Cubs ahead 23-8.

They scored eighteen points in both the second and third quarters and four in the fourth quarter. The game ended in a score of 63-37.

“I felt the boys played unselfishly and their defense was played at a high level. If we continue to work hard and play focused, I believe we can have a good season,” said Coach David Taylor. “So far I have been pleased with the team’s effort.”

Humboldt’s first home basketball game took place on Dec. 14 but ended in an unfortunate loss to the Burlington Wildcats.
The Lady Cubs started out fairly well and ended the first quarter in the lead.

The second quarter, however, did not go so well and Burlington had the lead at halftime.

“We got off to an early lead, but we struggled quite a bit in the second quarter,” said Jeff Wilkerson, head coach. “We had too many turnovers, but I was happy that we came out in the second half and kept playing hard.”

The second half was fairly close, but Burlington’s points in the second quarter were too great, and the Lady Cubs could not overcome the deficit.

“Our team did alright, but we did not have a great shooting percentage, and we had tons of turnovers,” said Lenzie Boring, jr.

“We hustled well, and we looked for the open shot, but we still need to work on getting shots off faster and working the ball around more.”

The Lady Cubs lost the game to the Wildcats.

Team members agree that they have skills to work on in order to be successful this season.

“We need to keep our momentum up throughout the game in order to win,” said Callie Umholtz, jr. “I also think that their man-to-man defense rattled us a bit.”

The Lady Cubs, however, keep a positive attitude about their season so far.
“I think we have definitely improved since last year, and we are more aggressive,” said Umholtz. “We are also working and clicking more as a team.”

The Lady Cubs traveled to Caney to face the Bullpups on Tuesday. While there the team was defeated with a final score of 38-54.
Terra Woods, sr., was the leading scorer with 10 points in the Caney game. Randi Barnett, jr., was right behind her with nine points. Boring followed with six points. Kelci Owens, jr., and Sarah Works, sr., each added four.

“The Caney game was not one of the greatest games that we have played,” said Megan Dillow, jr. “We came out of the locker room ready to roll, but we still followed them the rest of the game.”

Following Winter Break the team will face the Yates Center Wildcats for their second home game of the season on Jan. 4.
