Taking first place, the Cubs proved to be a worthy opponent in the Marmaton Valley tournament. The team competed against and defeated three teams in the round robin tournament which began on Dec. 4 and lasted until Dec. 7. Those three teams were West Elk, Marmaton Valley, and Northeast Arma.

“We played great; we never gave up, and we came together as a team,” said Devin Myers, sr. “It’s awesome; we deserved the win because we worked hard for it and most importantly we played as a team.”

The Cubs played on the opening day of the tournament against West Elk, winning 64-42.

Disappointing the Marmaton Valley Wildcats in their own territory, the Cubs came out the stronger feline winning their second game of the tournament on Dec. 6 with a final score of 64-50.

The Cubs made 29 out of the 44 shots attempted and suffered eight turnovers as a team.

“We all went out with a positive attitude. The girls all played their best games on those three days,” said Gutierrez. “We did not get over-confident when we played. Everyone stayed calm and did not let our nerves take over.”

Northeast Arma was the only thing standing in the Lady Cub’s way of winning the tournament. Northeast outscored the Lady Cubs in the first quarter 12 to 13.

In the second quarter the Lady Cubs scored 13 points and Northeast scored 10. The scores were tied in the third and fourth quarters.

In the third both teams scored six and in the fourth both teams put up nine points.

The Lady Cubs came out on top in the end with a final score of 40-38.

“I thought we all worked hard and played well,” said Works. “We improved greatly from last year, and I was happy we could get first for my senior year.”

Getting first in the tournament this year is a big improvement from last year, when the Lady Cubs left the tournament with a 1-2 record. This year, they walked away with a 3-1 record.

“I was so happy when we won the Moran tournament,” said Gutierrez. “Winning it made us realize that we can win any game as long as we play hard.”
