Moran tournament basketball action
Team shows progress

Clobbering the West Elk Patriots in the Marmaton Valley tournament, the varsity boys left the gymnasium in high spirits, winning by 22 points.

With a score of 64-42, the Cubs made major headway in the tournament on Tuesday afternoon.

“We played well as a team,” said Tevin Strack, so. “Winning the first game of the tournament helped us get going and get the jitters out.”

Mauling the Patriots to a pulp, the JV boys sent their opponents home sad and defeated with a final score of 38-25.

“We played as a team and hustled well,” said Derrik McCall, fr.

The results of last night’s game against Marmaton Valley were unavailable at press time and could not be posted in today’s paper.

The Cubs will play this afternoon: JV at 4:00, varsity at 5:30 against Northeast Arma.


Ladies start with win

The first week of December brought the 10th annual Marmaton Valley Pre-Season Tournament.

In their first game of the tournament the Lady Cubs played the West Elk Patriots.

“I feel sad [about my last Moran Tournament], I’m definitely going to miss it,” said Terra Woods, sr. “We need to work on staying calm and running the plays through. We need to stop rushing things.”

Kelci Owens, so., led the team in scoring with 20 points. Randi Barnett, jr., was second in scoring with 13 points, four of the points were free-throws.

Juniors Megan Dillow and Lenzie Boring scored six points a piece. Woods scored four points, and Callie Umholtz, jr., added two.

The results of Thursday’s game against Marmaton Valley were not available at press time.

The Lady Cubs will play at 4 pm tonight followed by the JV.


Cubs dominate season opener at Neody

On Nov. 30 the boy’s basketball team competed against the Neodesha Bluestreaks in Neodesha.

The junior varsity began its season in a convincing win against the Bluestreaks with a final score of 40-20.

The starting line-up for the varsity team was: Sam Norris, sr., Devin Myers, sr., Zach Cole, sr., Thad Wells, jr., and Cory Henshall, so.

The Cubs got the jump ball and moved the ball down-court for a lay-up, starting the game with a two-point lead.

“I wasn’t really that nervous [about the first game]. I was just focused.” said Wells. “I think everyone shared the ball well. No one was selfish.

Henshall led in rebounds with four. Norris, Cole, and Myers were close behind with three rebounds each. Wells had two rebounds.

Norris led in assists with two. Cole, Myers, Wells, and Henshall had one assist each.

Cole came in first in steals, making three. Norris had two steals and Myers had one.

“I think our team’s biggest strength is how we play together, nobody is selfish, and we play aggressive defense.” said Cole.

The Cubs brought home their first win of the season with a final score of 53-37.


Girls suffers first loss

The girl’s basketball team launched their season on Nov. 30 at Neodesha.

The junior varsity team lost a two-quarter game with a close score of 11-16.

After a slow start in the first half, the varsity Lady Cubs fought their way back in the second half, ending just short of victory with a final score of 53-65.

Leading in points was Kelci Owens, so., who scored 20 points, Adrienne Gutierrez, sr., made 14 points.

Senior Terra Woods made six points and junior Randi Barnett scored five points.

“ They did a good job hustling and rebounding, but we need to come out of the locker room ready to play,” said coach Jeff Wilkerson. “I expect these girls to put this loss behind them and focus on the rest of the season.”
