Oct. 20 was a challenging day for the Varsity Lady Cubs. The
2A Sub-state volleyball tournament was held in Humboldt for the first time
in many years. The tournament started at 2 p.m. in the Fieldhouse.
The Lady Cubs started the tournament with every intention of winning every
single match and making it to State.
To start the day off the Lady Cubs played against the 0-32 Pleasanton Blue
Jays. The Lady Cubs dominated the Blue Jays and took the match in two games.
Sarah Works, sr., led in kills this match with eight, Terra Woods, sr., was
close behind her with six kills. Woods also led in aces, having six. Lenzie
Boring, jr., led with three digs. Woods once again was close behind her with
two. Owens had 10 assists.
Uniontown proved to be a tough match for the Lady Cubs. The Eagles won the
first game of the match by two points. Determined to win, the Lady Cubs took
the match to three games and fought their way to the championship match to
play the Saint Mary’s Colgan Panthers.
Owens made 24 assists. Boring led in digs with 19 and Woods was second with
16 digs. Works led again in kills with 11, Woods with nine, and Callie Umholtz,
jr., had seven. Boring had three blocks.
“How well we all work together [made the season successful]. I couldn’t
have asked for a better group of girls to work with,” said Woods. “We
had very high levels of determination.
Playing in the Uniontown match [was my favorite part of sub-state]. They beat
us last year in the final round, and it felt good to beat them.”
The Colgan game was a devastating loss for the Lady Cubs. After fighting through
the three long games against Uniontown they failed to pull through and make
it to State.

Nice Hit!

Sub-state.
The Sub-state tournament was held in the Fieldhouse on Saturday, Oct.20 .
The Lady Cubs beat the Pleasanton BlueJays and the Uniontown Eagles
but were deafeated by the Colgan Panthers in the finals.
Works led in digs with five and Myers one short with four.
Woods led with five kills. Boring and Owens tied with one block a piece. Owens
had nine assists.
Works, Woods, and Owens each had one ace during the two games against Colgan.
“For the most part I think we played to the best of our ability,”
said Woods.”We rushed right into the final match. Colgan had a break,
we didn’t. It was a tough ending to handle, but people were still supportive,
and we appreciated it very much.”
Myers said, “I wasn’t too nervous at the beginning, but as we
moved on it got worse. After we beat Colgan twice in our home tournament,
I think they came back looking for revenge.
They started out strong, and their intensity was high the entire game. We
played our best but it just wasn’t enough in the end.”
The Lady Cubs played Colgan twice previous to the Sub-state tournament.
In the Humboldt tournament the Lady Cubs defeated Colgan in pool play and
then once again in bracket play for the championship. Colgan came back strong
and got their revenge.
“Although the loss to Colgan was a heartbreaker, the girls should be
proud of themselves after Saturday,” said Staci Leavitt, head coach.
“They fought in the Uniontown match to get the win and just didn’t
have enough steam left for the championship.
We had a fantastic season and our four seniors are going to be missed.”

but we stuck with it and came away with a win against Fredonia,” said
Callie Umholtz, jr.
To end the day, the Lady Cubs played Fredonia. After winning the first game
and losing the second game, the team came back to pull of a close victory
in the third game of the match.
“I am proud of the girls after this weekend; they are fighters,”
said Staci Leavitt, head coach. “ We played great in pool play, our
serving and passing was on all day.
The last match against Fredonia physically and emotionally exhausted us...These
girls never give up; that is what I love about them."
Oct. 16 was a big night for the Lady Cubs. They traveled to
Burlington to face up against the Burlington Wildcats and the Fredonia Yellowjackets.
Fredonia was the Lady Cubs’ first opponent. The Lady Cubs swatted the
Jackets in two matches without giving the Yellowjackets a chance at three
games.
“We played our hearts out and gave it our all! We played one of our
best games of the season against Burlington,” said Katie Manbeck, sr.
Burlington was the last challenge for the Lady Cubs. After three tiring matches,
