West Elk gave Humboldt more of a challenge in their third match
of the day, but they were not good enough to stop the Lady Cubs and were taken
down in two games.
The fourth match of the day was with Colgan, who played with Humboldt and
gave them a run for their money.
However, the Lady Cubs started and ended on top after two games.
Southeast took the Lady Cubs to three games in the fifth match of the day,
but the team pulled through to win and made it to the championship game.

Block!

rushes to cover. Boring ended the tourament with two total blocks.
Colgan was the Lady Cubs’ last obstacle in the way of
the first-place trophy.
The nail-biting game ended in two close games with the Lady Cubs winning first
place.
Senior Sarah Works led in kills, hitting 47 in the tourney. Kelci Owens, jr.,
made 105 assists during the day, Owens also had 11 aces. Terra Woods, sr.,
dug up 49. Callie Umholtz, jr., blocked six attempted hits.
“We played outstanding volleyball throughout the day,” said Staci
Leavitt, head coach. “We started out a little slow and didn’t
seem to be focused in the early matches of pool play. A totally different
team showed up against Colgan and from there, we never let down.”
After returning home to play on Oct. 2 against Caney Valley
and Neodesha, the Lady Cubs struggled to play their best volleyball and ended
the night with one win and one loss.
Humboldt snatched a 25-21 victory in the first game against Caney, but they
fell short in the second. However, the team fought back, and the third match
ended with a win.
Later that evening, the Lady Cubs stepped back onto the court to face the
Bluestreaks.
After two intense games, the teams were tied with one win each.
Toward the end of the match, Humboldt was down, but made an amazing comeback
that almost won them the match.
The Cubs did their best and pushed the game to 25-27, but in the end Neodesha
came out on top.
“Tonight was a heartbreaker,” said Staci Leavitt, head coach.
“We came out strong against Neodesha in game 1, then didn’t show
up in game 2.

Swing Hard

against Eureka
We played with Neodesha point for point in game 3, but they
had two more balls hit the floor.”
The following week, the volleyball team traveled to Eureka on Oct. 9.
First, the Lady Cubs played Cherryvale. Humboldt took the match in two wins,
and then moved on to play Eureka
.
After losing to the Tornadoes in the first game, the Lady Cubs rallied back
to win the second. However, they were not able to win the third game, and
they came up short against Eureka.
“The first game [against Eureka] was a pretty easy win,” said
Megan Dillow, jr. “In the second game we lost our intensity and couldn’t
get it back.”
Up next for the Lady Cubs will be a tournament at Neodesha tomorrow.
“We have some competition in our bracket so we have our work cut out
for us,” said Callie Umholtz, jr. “We’ll just have to start
out strong and keep our intensity up.”
After two back to back nights of volleyball on Oct. 1 and 2,
the junior varsity team played again on Oct. 8 at Eureka.
On Oct. 1 the team faced off against Fredonia and Southern Coffey County at
home. The team came up short losing to both teams.
The next night, the C-team started the evening off against Caney, but lost
the match.
Next, the JV team played Caney and despite a close second game the Bullpups
pulled away and won the match.
Against Neodesha, the team lost the match in two games.
Tuesday the JV Lady Cubs traveled to Eureka where they were victorious, beating
Cherryvale in two games.
“It felt really good to get our first win, and I know that we worked
hard for it,” said Lauren Reed, fr.
The team lost their next two matches to both Cherryvale and Eureka in two
games a piece.
