In their first home game of the season, the Cubs mauled the Burlington Wildcats 33-6.

“It feels great to beat them [Burlington] my senior season the first game of the year,” said Sam Norris, sr. “It got us off on a great start because it gives us confidence for the rest of the season.”

Blowing away the competition, the Cubs were up 33 to nothing in the first half of the game.

During the second half the Wildcats proved that they were not going to give up the fight so easily. The Cats dug their claws into Cub territory and blocked a punt, then ran the ball in for a touchdown from a fumble recovery.

This play bumped the score up, Cubs 33, Cats 6.

The following week, the Cubs won their second game of the season at home with an astounding 36-0 shutout.

The Cubs annihilated the Yates Center Wildcats. Proving their worth, the Cubs had the Cats in the bag during the third quarter, scoring seven points in the first quarter, 16 in the second, and 13 in the third.

“Our line was mediocre, but Sam did run hard,” said Andrew Whitaker, jr. “There is always room for improvement, and we will show that improvement against Caney Friday night because during practice this week I saw a huge difference in the line.”

The Cubs will be in action again tonight as they try to add to their undefeated 2-0 record. The game will be played at Caney Valley and is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.

“We have watched a lot of film from this year and last year,” said Travis Burk, head coach. “We have done a lot more conditioning so we will be physically prepared and mentally prepared [against Caney].”

“My expectations are high. First and foremost, expect our kids to do everything at 100%. We want our kids to be focused and play fast; if we do all of these things we should be victorious.”

Junior varsity participated in their first football game of the season Sept. 10 at Yates Center.

Despite a valiant effort the JV Cubs were handed a 12-32 loss by the Wildcats.

“I don’t think we worked well together,” said Derrik McCall, fr. “We were hurting ourselves with fumbles, bad snaps, not blocking and not hustling. The team needs to work on paying attention in practice and also tackling.”

Up next for the team will be a match up against the Caney Bullpups for their first home game on Sept. 17.

Despite the Lady Cubs’ efforts, they managed a split for their first home game of the season. Neodesha took the first game, but not without a fight.

“I feel that the Neodesha game went really well for being our first match, and we stayed with them the entire time,” said Lenzie Boring, jr.

Neodesha won the second game against Oswego also and took the win in two games.

Next, the Lady Cubs played Oswego, who also took the first game. Humboldt went into the second game and came out on top.

They remained neck and neck throughout the whole third game, until Humboldt finally took the game and the match, giving the Lady Cubs their first win.

In their second trial at home, the Lady Cubs dominated. They played and defeated both Cherryvale and Altoona.

After losing to Humboldt in the Iola tournament, Cherryvale came looking for revenge. The Cubs, however, were quick to disappoint them and took the match in two games.

The Lady Cubs then went on to play Altoona, and took the first game of the match.

Moving on to the second game, both teams remained close the entire time. Humboldt pulled it out in the end, however, and earned themselves two wins for the night.

The Lady Cubs’ next game is Sept. 18 at Burlington.

Leading the Lady Cubs defensively was Lenzie Boring, jr., with 14 digs.

“I feel that our volleyball team is bonded together because we have played together for a long time. I love playing varsity because it is a fast-paced game, and our cheers are really cool. [We] are motivated and play [our] best every match,” said Boring

In their second match of the day, Labette County held the Lady Cubs to two games as well.

“We had a hard time defending Labette’s attacks and just couldn’t get anything going against them,” said Staci Leavitt, head coach.

“Our team does cheers, and we motivate each other by spending time together and listening to pump-up music before the games to get us going,” said Owens.

While the varsity team was playing in Iola, the junior varsity went on the road to Moran to compete in a tournament there.

While in Moran, the team struggled both offensively and defensively losing to Hartford, Southern Coffey County, Uniontown, and Southeast Arma.

“I think the team could improve by communicating and being more positive. We have been working hard in practice and I think it will pay off in our next game,” said Taylor Fitzmaurice, fr.
