Middle school basketball
In previous years, middle school basketball was split into two separate seasons.
However, the addition of the Fieldhouse has allowed the seasons to occur at
the same time.
Jeremy Weilert and Eric Carlson coach the boys while Stephanie Middleton and
Staci Leavitt coach the girls.
The eighth grade boys team so far has a record of 0-7. The seventh grade boys
team has a record of 3-4. Both of the girls’ teams have records of 0-7.
The next game will be held on Monday at Caney.

MySpace to take precautions against online predators
After two long years of negotiations, MySpace announced Tuesday that new safety
precautions would be added to the social networking site.
By sending in their children’s e-mail addresses, parents can prevent
their children from ever creating a profile.
The profiles of children under 18 years of age will also be kept private.
While nothing can as of yet be done to verify the age of users, a task force
has been assembled to study the matter.
Changes should be made by the end of 2008.

Booby-trap kills police
Caught in the snares of a booby-trap, one police officer was killed and five
others were wounded while investigating a home south of Baquba, Iraq.
While patrolling the Diyala province capital, police enforcement was confronted
by the second booby-trapped home within one week. The house exploded as officers
were entering it.
A house explosion of the same nature in Iraq took the lives of six Americans
last Wednesday as well. Dozens of suspected extremists were killed and several
more were arrested.

The GALS Annual Prom Dress sale will be going on from 3 p.m.
until 8 p.m. on Feb. 1 and from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 2.
This event not only gives people a place to sell their formals, but also gives
many girls the opportunity to buy a reasonably priced gown for Sweetheart,
Prom, or any other formal event they may have coming up.
The GALS FCE unit in Humboldt sponsors the Prom Dress Consignment Sale as
a community project.
They will be collecting a handling fee of $1 per dress when the dresses are
delivered to the Library to help cover their expenses. Also, a 10% commission
will be retained on all items sold which will be given to the school for the
After Prom Party.
Girls wanting to sell their dresses and any accessories or shoes in good,
clean condition are to bring them to the Humboldt Public Library Community
Room located at 916 Bridge in Humboldt on Jan. 31 between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Sales will be on a cash basis only. Unsold items and cash from sales must
be picked up on Feb. 2 between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. For any questions, contact
Carol Bauer at (620) 473-2406 or carolbauer@sbcglobal.net or Linda Leonard

District staff joins Relay for Life
By Bailey Myers, jr.
Advertising Manager
This year for the Allen County Relay for Life, USD 258 is getting
involved. Kim Isbell, English teacher, and Sandy Mintz, secretary, has begun
organizing a team to participate in the event. Their goal is to get all three-school
buildings involved.
So far they have planned on doing concession stands for the Humboldt Recreation
basketball tournaments on Saturdays, and they will also be offering a few
lunches to the faculty and staff as a free will donation. The first lunch
will occur on Jan. 25 where they will be serving a soup and sandwich lunch.
Plans have also been made to do many other fundraisers.
FCCLA will also be aiding in the fundraising due to some middle school members
that have come up with the idea to do the Working for a Cure campaign. They
will be working concession stands and donating a portion of the profits to
the relay team.
