California in flames
Nearly 250,000 people have been forced to leave their southern Californian
homes due to uncontrolled forest fires. Thousands of homes have been lost
to nearly two dozen fires, several of which have yet to be contained.
New evidence has surfaced that at least two of the fires were started by arsonists,
and many more have suspicious origins. The arsonist(s) has not been identified,
but California governor Arnold Schwartzenegger has vowed, “We will hunt
down the people responsible for that.”

Chessboard killer convicted
Russian serial killer Alexander Pichushkin was convicted last week of 48 murders
and three murder attempts. Pichushkin claims that he killed 60 people, but
the claim could not be proven. He preyed mostly on the homeless and the elderly.
Pichushkin had intended to one person for each of the 64 squares of a chessboard,
giving him the nickname “Chessboard Killer”.
The defendant has been sentenced to compulsory psychiatric therapy, but cannot
avoid responsibility for his crimes.

NHS begins year with new officers
By Jordan Stiffler, jr.
Reporter
One of the several organizations within the school is the National
Honor Society, NHS. Every year NHS inducts twelve juniors to join the club
for the upcoming school year. They receive a pin at the induction ceremony,
and they receive a medallion for graduation.
“National Honor Society is a good program because it recognizes students
for academics and also shows that they are involved in activities in the community
outside of school,” said Rob Myers, club sponsor.
The qualifications for the club are that a student must have held a grade
point average of at least a 3.0 all throughout high school, and they have
to fill out an application. Applicants must write an essay about why they
think they would be a good addition to the NHS program. The essays are evaluated,
and members are initiated.
This year’s officers include President Phillip Vernon, sr., Vice President
Britany Sellman, sr., StuCo representative Daniel Weilert. sr., Secretary
Haley Huffman, sr., Treasurer Katie Manbeck, sr.
“It is a good program because it keeps students involved,” said
Sellman.
Town celebrates Military Day
By Haley Huffman, sr.
Editor-in-Chief
With only two months left to celebrate the 150th year since
the founding of Humboldt, the community will be invited to join in on a Veteran’s
Day Event commemorating Military Day on Nov. 11 at 2 p.m.
The event will be on the southeast corner of the square and will feature speakers
and music.
The Humboldt band will be attending the event. Band students will be performing
“Patriotic Spectacular,” “Salute to America’s Finest,”
and America My Country Tis of Thee”.
“I expect to have a fun time interacting with friends and classmates
and entertaining the hordes of people who appreciate the music we create,”
said Jordan Stiffler, jr.
Also being recognized this month as part of the sesquicentennial events is
the founding of Humboldt’s first newspaper, the Humboldt Herald, in
1864. The paper ended in 1865 before Orlin Thurston began the Humboldt Union
in 1866.
Following the celebration of Thanksgiving, everyone is invited to the Santa
on the Square celebration on Nov. 24 from 3-4 p.m.
