Mixed results in

Yates Center, April 16- Defeating the Wildcats,
the Humboldt softball team won both of their games with the scores of 3-0
and 3-0.
In the first game Lenzie Boring, so., pitched seven innings. She allowed two
hits, three walks, and ten strikeouts. Terra Woods, jr., and Katie Manbeck,
jr., both made two singles each. In the second game, Boring pitched seven
innings once again with five hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.
“This was our best defensive outing of the season with no errors,”
said head coach Brad Piley. “Lenzie Boring had two amazing games with
14 strikeouts total; her defensive teammates wouldn’t allow any runs.”
Janelle Herder, sr., Manbeck and Randi Barnett, so., hit one single each in
the second game while Callie Umholtz, so., and Boring made one double each.
The boys also played against Yates Center. They lost their first game with
a score of 1-2, but they had a total of four hits while Yates Center had three
hits. Humboldt lost to Yates Center with a score of 5-8 in the second game.
In the first game Tory Thomas, sr., went six innings, allowing one hit and
two runs. Trey Zartman, sr., helped out the team by hitting a double.
In the second game, Andrew Whitaker, so., pitched four innings, allowing five
hits and six runs. Thomas made three hits in the game and Thad Wells, so.,
made two.
Fredonia, April 12 - Several students attended
a golf tournament in Fredonia.
Junior Martey Hebeler, who has been playing golf competitively for three years,
tied for fourth by shooting an 81; however, Hebeler ended with a sixth place
finish due to a tie breaker.
“I felt I played pretty well until toward the end,” said Hebeler.
Other first year golf members who attended were freshmen Bret Hauser who scored
a 113, Mary Hauser who followed with a 145, and Brandon Womeldorf who shot
a 161.
Iola, April 23 - Golf members also attended a meet in Iola on April 23.

While at the meet Hebeler scored a 94. Next in line was B. Hauser
who shot a total of 111. Following him was M. Hauser with a score of 165.
“I did pretty well but some I couldn’t hit,” said M. Hauser.
“I felt I did well for how I played.”
Eureka, April 23- Even though this track meet
was rescheduled, the members from the track team placed.
The boys team took first place overall with 136 points while the girls team
took fifth place.
“Getting first as an individual and as a team is always the goal at
every track meet. This is the first team win since I have been here (five
years) so it was rewarding to see how far the team has come from six boys
and girls in my first year to almost 30 this year,” said Eric Carlson,
track coach.
Zach Cole, jr., got first in the triple jump.
The 4X400 team of sophomores Scott Sollars and Chris Winner, and seniors Josh
Honas and Tanner Korf took first as well.

The 4X800 got first which included freshmen Nick Miller, sophomores
Sollars, and Andy Hill, and junior Joab Barr.
Many people also received second place awards in their events.
Andy Hill, so., got second in both the high jump and 3200 meter.
Winner received second place in the 300 meter hurdles. Barr also took second
in the 1600 meter event.
“Everybody did a good job competing,” said Carlson. “We
had a few people try new events, and they did well.”
For the girls, junior Sarah Works got second in the long jump, and also got
fifth in both the 300 hurdles and the 200 meter dash. Laura Watts, so., got
fourth in the 400 meter dash, and Shelley Herder, so., got fifth in the triple
jump and sixth in the long jump.
Cubs receive eighth place at Fredonia

Fredonia, April 20 - During the track meet
at Fredonia, the boys team earned an eighth place finish while the girls’
team placed eleventh.
Junior Zach Cole got fifth place in javelin with a distance of 135’4”.
He also placed fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 37’ 1/4”.
His 17’3 1/2” jump in the long jump earned him sixth place in
that event.
“I think everyone tried their hardest and did very well,” said
Cole. “I think I could have done a little better on my events with
a little more practice, and I could go a little higher in the rankings.”
Sophomore Chris Winner finished third place in 110 high hurdles with the
time of 18.62 seconds.
Winner got second place in 300 intermediate hurdles with the
time of 43.96 seconds while Scott Sollars, so., finished in fifth place
with the time of 45.84 seconds for the same event.
Sophomore Andy Hill placed fifth in high jump with a height of 5’2”.
Senior Josh Honas got fifth place in 100m dash with the time of 11.61 seconds.
Honas also placed third in 200m dash with the time of 23.94 seconds.
“I think the track meet went well,” said Honas. “I don’t
think I could have done better on very much but the 100 m. I think I need
to work on my stamina because I want to try to run three events at Regionals
which are back to back to back.”
Junior Sarah Works led the girls’ team as she received fourth place
in both the 100m hurdles and the 300m hurdles.
Ladies awarded third

Yates Center, April 20 - Despite suffering
a loss in the first game of the Lindsey Friederich Memorial Tournament against
Iola, the Lady Cubs won the second game against Neodesha to take third place.
Through five innings, the Lady Cubs were down 1-2. They let four runs go
in the sixth inning and Iola added another tally in the seventh to end the
game with a final score of 1-7.
“We had several mistakes [in the sixth inning], but they had some
fantastic hits and one even went over the fence for a home run,” said
Bailey Myers, so.
Lenzie Boring, so., went seven innings and threw five strikeouts along with
four walks.

Britany Sellman, jr., had a double. Tessa Coronado, jr., had
three singles. Callie Umholtz, so., and Janelle Herder, sr., were the only
other team members to have a hit with one single apiece.
In the second game, Neodesha posted the first points of the second game,
but Humboldt won the game with a final score of 13-8.
“We were a little bummed from losing to Iola, and I think that followed
us while playing Neodesha,” said Herder.
Boring once again pitched all seven innings, this time with nine strikeouts
and three walks.
Kelci Owens, so., and Myers had three singles against Neodesha. Umholtz
and Boring also had success at the plate with one double and one single
each. Coronado had two singles while Herder had one.
Boys take first at home tournament

Humboldt, April 20 - Taking their opponents
by storm in the Humboldt Baseball Tournament, the Cubs won both games to
take first place. In the first game, the score was 11-1 over Neodesha, while
the second game score was 8-3 over Iola.
“It felt good that we could step up in the tournament two years in
a row, especially this year since we have struggling,” said Brent
Frederick, sr.
In the first game of the tournament, Thad Wells, so., led the team as the
pitcher. He had four strikeouts in five innings. He walked one runner and
allowed three hits. Wells led offensively with senior Tory Thomas. Each
had three runs.

Phillip Vernon, jr., hit a rope to right center to score three
runs to end the game with a run-rule.
“At first I thought I had hit a single. It turns out that I hit a
single with three errors,” said Vernon.
In the second game of the tournament, Thomas led the team as the pitcher.
He struck out seven batters, walked two runners, and allowed three runs
on four hits in seven innings. Frederick and Wells led the team offensively
with two runs apiece. Vernon and Devin Myers, jr., both got one RBI each,
while Thomas, Wells, and Whitaker all reached base on a walk.
“I think we played well,” said Wells, “We were focused
and ready to play. We hit the ball well and fielded just as well.”
JV boys split with
Burlington

Humboldt, April 12 - In their first home double
header against the Burlington Wildcats, the JV baseball team lost their first
game, but bounced back in the second game for a win.
In their first game the Cubs lost with a score of 3-6.
“I thought the guys played great despite the final score,” said
Jeremy Weilert, head coach. “We had some opportunities to score more
runs, but just didn’t get it done.”
Freshman Bryce Smith pitched the whole game and got six strikeouts, one walk,
and allowed six runs in five innings.
“I could have pitched a lot better,” said Smith. “The players
in the field made most of the plays.”

againstBurlington. The Humboldt Cubs lost the first game with a score of 3-6
but beat the Wildcats in the second game with a score of 12-11.
The Cubs won the second game with a score of 12-11.
“This game was back and forth all night,” said Weilert. “We
had a lead going into the top of the fifth and booted the ball around a few
times and let them take the lead.”
Troy Davis, so., had one hit and two walks. Chris Coronado, fr., and Cameron
Chambers, fr., led the team with two hits. The whole team had 10 hits.
“Overall, I think we did okay,” said Chambers. “We really
made some huge errors that caused the game to be close, but Scott [Sollars,
so.,] and Troy really pulled through for us in the end.”.
