Mound City, April 5 - Despite the snowy weather, the Lady Cubs swept the Jayhawk-Linn softball team.
The Lady Cubs won 5-0 in their first game against Jayhawk-Linn.

Lenzie Boring, jr., went seven innings with no runs, one hit, three walks, and 12 strikeouts. Callie Umholtz, so., had two singles in the first game along with juniors, Katie Manbeck and Tessa Coronado.

“Considering the cold weather and snow, I feel the team performed awesome. We had a little trouble hitting the ball in the gap, but our defense was great,” said Janelle Herder, sr. “I think the team is successful this year because we have really good hitting and Lenzie is doing awesome at the mound. We all want another trip to State, and we know it will take lots of hard work to get there.”

Boring went all seven innings and only allowed one hit. She threw three strikeouts and one walk.

“I was very proud of my girls that night. It was cold and snowy. When the game started their sweatshirts came off, and they played great softball, and did not complain about how cold it was. I had nine starters get hits in the first game, and Lenzie continues to pitch well,” said Brad Piley, softball coach.

Mound City, April 4 - Despite the cold, snowing weather the baseball team managed to pull off a victory of 14-1 in their first game against Jayhawk-Linn.

“Every member of the starting lineup had at least one hit in game one,” said Jeremy Weilert, head coach. “Tory [Thomas, sr.,] pitched an outstanding game. We started out the game a little slow offensively. The score was 1-0 after 3 innings. We were getting hits in those innings; we just weren’t able to get the runners home.

In the first three innings, the Cubs only had one point. In the next inning, the team scored two runs. In the fifth and sixth innings, they scored a total of 11 points.

The Cubs won one game against the Jayhawks..

In the second game, the team was not as successdul as they lost 4-8.

“Our pitching staff was a little thin for game two,” said Weilert. “Andy Honas [so.] started game two on the mound. He did exactly what I asked him to do; throw strikes and only walk during the first inning. We helped them out with a couple of throwing errors. We did not hit the ball nearly as well in game two. We need to become a more consistent hitting team.”
In the first inning Jayhawk Linn had a lead of four points and started to gain more points.

By the sixth inning, J-Linn had scored eight points while Humboldt had four.

“We played a fair game, we just did not execute when the time was right,” said Honas.

Humboldt, April 10 – Bearing the rain and the cold, the Cubs baseball team still came out on top over the Eureka Tornados with a score of 7-6.

“We played good before the rain,” said Thad Wells, so. “Once it began raining, we stuck with it and finished as a family.”
Wells led the team with two hits. Tory Thomas, sr., Andrew Whitaker, so., and Bryce Smith, fr., followed closely with one hit apiece.

Both Wells and Smith collected a single during the game. Thomas, Wells, and Whitaker each ended the game with one double each.

“I think we played well considering that we played in the mud,” said Smith. “Pitching was good even though we had some problems due to the weather.”

Thomas had a total of 11 strikeouts in his 5 1/3-inning pitching outing. Wells relieved him for the final 1 2/3 innings of the game.

“Tory pitched a great game but struggled a little when the rain started to get heavy,” said Jeremy Weilert, head coach. “There weren’t too many balls hit into the outfield. I told our guys to be patient, and for the most part we were.”
