Last week the Cubs participated in Sub-State. They competed against Northeast Arma, Altoona-Midway, and St. Mary’s Colgan. After winning the first two games, the Cubs fell to Colgan in the final round of Sub-State.

The Cubs faced the Northeast Vikings at home in the first round and won with the score of 82-50.

“I think we played well,” said Sam Norris, jr. “We all shot really well. It’s time to shine.”

Connecting on four of his six three-point attempts and five of his six field goal attempts, Norris led the team in scoring with 22 points. Cole ended with 15 points while Brent Frederick, sr., added 11 points.

“We played really well,” said Zach Cole, jr. “All of the extra shooting at practice paid off because everyone shot really well the whole game.”

Drue Barton, sr., pulled down a total of eight rebounds. Cole followed with five rebounds while Frederick and Norris had four each.

“We played together and hit from the outside,” said Frederick. “We got open shots because we made the extra pass.”

In the second round of Sub-State, Humboldt traveled to Pittsburg to challenge the Altoona-Midway Jets. The Cubs received another win with a score of 74-72.

Josh Honas, sr., led the team in scoring. He ended the game with a total of 22 points. Cole connected for a total of 16 points. Thomas also contributed 12 points to the Cubs final score.

“I thought we played very well in the first half,” said Thomas. “We executed our plays and played very tough defense. The second half was pretty sloppy, but we ended up with the main goal and that was to get the win.”

Honas also led the team by pulling down six rebounds. Frederick followed closely with four rebounds. Thomas also picked up three rebounds for the game.

“We played really well,” said Honas. “We let down a bit in the second half, but we got the job done and came out with the important win.”

In the final round of Sub-State, the Humboldt Cubs once again traveled to Pittsburg but came up short against the Colgan Panthers. The Cubs lost with the score of 38-54 and took second place in Sub-State.

Frederick led the Cubs in scoring with 13 points. Zartman also added nine points to the Cubs’ final score. Thomas rounded out the top scorers with six points.

“We did not play very well in the championship game,” said Frederick. “Overall, we did have a great season.”

The Cubs ended their season with a record of 17-6.

“I am very proud of the effort our kids put forth this season,” said Jason Jones, head coach. “We learned what it means to play together and not care who gets the credit. We are losing a good group of seniors, and I hope the underclassmen will take these lessons and use them. As far as next year, we have three of our top six scores returning and a nice group of younger players will be in the mix I am sure. I am looking forward to another trip to the Sub-State finals, and hopefully we will take what we learned and go on to State.”

Uniontown, Feb. 27- In their first Sub-State game, the Lady Cubs lost to the Uniontown Eagles by only five points. The final score, 35-40, meant that the season was over for Humboldt.

“If I could pick, I wouldn’t pick this game to end on,” said Michele Rickner, sr. “Still, I felt the team worked hard and kept playing till the end.”

Kelci Owens, so., led the offense with 12 points. Terra Woods, jr., was next in line with eight. Lenzie Boring, so., was close behind with seven. Sarah Works, jr., and Woods had five rebounds each. Barnett and Boring followed with three apiece.

Although this year’s season has now ended, head coach Jeff Wilkerson is looking forward to next season.

“Next year should be just as exciting,” said Wilkerson. “We will be returning four starters and several promising girls that came off the bench. I look forward to another year with them.”
