Humboldt, Feb. 16 - In honor of Parents’ Night, the Humboldt Cubs beat the Eureka Tornadoes with a score of 64-29.

“It was great to win our last regular season home game of my senior year,” said Cliff Adams, sr. “It felt amazing playing for my parents and playing good enough to get the JV in and give Justin [Kaufman, sr.,] more minutes. Justin starting for the first time in a varsity game this year made the game even more special for him and the team.”

Josh Honas, sr., led the team with 12 points. Sam Norris, jr., and Cory Henshall, fr., followed close behind with 10 points each.

“The key to winning the game by so much was our stifling defense and our up-tempo style of offense,” said Kaufman. “Playing together was a huge key to winning by so much. If we didn’t have chemistry the way that we do, we would not be nearly as good as we are.”

Cherryvale, Feb. 13 - Upon traveling to Cherryvale, the Cubs came out victorious over the Chargers with a score of 74-55.

The leading scorers for the night were Trey Zartman and Josh Honas, srs., with 20 points each. Cory Henshall, fr., followed with 13 points.

“The guards hit some big shots and penetrated,” said Henshall. “They gave good entry passes to the post, and we finished [with a bucket].”

Coming off a disappointing loss at home against Yates Center, the Cubs had to pull together and improve on their weaknesses in order to get the win.

“We made 73 percent of our free throws which is a lot better than 40 percent against Yates Center,” said Cliff Adams, sr. “When it came to running the floor, we were faster and stronger than they were.”

Adams and Sam Norris, jr., led the team in rebounds with six each. They were followed closely by Honas, Drue Barton, sr., and Zach Cole, jr., with five rebounds apiece.

Humboldt, Feb. 9 - Although the Cubs were up with six seconds left in the game, it was not enough to keep Yates Center from coming back to win after three overtime periods. The Cubs fell with a final score of 70-73.

Sam Norris, jr., led the Cubs with 19 points, three rebounds, and two steals. Following closely behind with 13 points, three rebounds, and one steal was Josh Honas, sr.

“The turning point in the game for us came at the free throw line,” said Honas. “Next time we are in that situation, we will make our free throws. We played well and hard, but that wasn’t enough to get the job done.”

Tory Thomas, sr., also helped the Cubs battle through the overtimes with five points and six assists.

“We played with all the endurance we could have and still kept the game under control,” said Thomas. “I believe that the game was a definite learning curve for all of the players and coaches.”
