Caney, Feb. 6- Many Lady Cubs helped the team’s scoring, but it was not enough to overcome the Caney Valley Bullpups. Humboldt lost the game with a final score of 37-60.

“I think we could have played a lot better against Caney,” said Lenzie Boring, so. “We played all right, but we made a ton of silly mistakes.”

Kelci Owens, so., and Boring tied for the most points with eight each. Michele Rickner, sr., and Adrienne Gutierrez, jr., followed with six points apiece.

“We were shooting more,” said Callie Umholtz, so.

Kim Johnston, fr., chipped in four points and Randi Barnett, so., scored three. Terra Woods, jr., rounded out the scoring with two points.

“As a team, we worked the ball around well, and our free throws were pretty good,” said Boring.

Boring had the most steals with four. Umholtz followed with two. Owens and Woods each had a steal to their credit.

Rickner led the team in rebounding with eight. Barnett, Woods, and Boring, each had three boards. Gutierrez also had a rebound.

“We worked together and made some good plays, but we buckled under the pressure in the second half,” said Umholtz. “We started making fouls, and we had trouble putting the ball up.”

Umholtz noticed some things from the Caney game that the Lady Cubs need to focus on for future games.

“We need to work on blocking out and our defensive plays,” said Umholtz. “We also need to work on learning how to play better under pressure.”

The Lady Cubs will be facing the Yates Center Wildcats tonight. The game will begin after the completion of the JV boys game.

Neodesha, Jan. 30- After traveling to Neodesha, the Lady Cubs basketball team struggled against the Bluestreaks and lost 14-51.

“The team got off to a slow start but did a good job in the second half. I liked the fact that the girls kept playing and did not give up after a not so good start,” said Jeff Wilkerson, head coach.

During the game the two high scorers were Terra Woods, jr., with six points and Michele Rickner, sr., with five points. Kelci Owens, so., added two points to the score. Adrienne Gutierrez, jr., scored one point in the game.

The junior varsity girls also came up short against Burlington with a final score of 33-46.

Johnston led in scoring with an overall seven points. Johnston achieved this by making three two-point shots and one out of two attempted free throws.

Adding more points to the Lady Cubs’ score were Barnett, Gutierrez and Karna Carlson, jr., who earned four points each.

Humboldt, Jan. 26 - Pulling off a win last Friday, the Lady Cubs beat the Fredonia Yellowjackets in an intense game. The final score was 46-41.

“I think working on our fundamentals is helping a lot,” said Kim Johnston, fr.

The leading scorer was Randi Barnett, so., with a total of nine points throughout the entire game. She also had two steals, two rebounds and only one turnover.

Following Barnett was Kelci Owens and Lenzie Boring, sos., with eight points each during the game.

“We want to make our town proud of us, and we do not want to let ourselves down,” said Barnett. “I felt great about the final score because our score was higher than theirs.”

Owens also had one steal and two turnovers.

Boring had one steal, four rebounds and two turnovers.

“At practices, we normally scrimmage and do a lot of passing drills,” said Owens. “[I think] these drills help us feel the intensity of a real game and work on getting the ball to the inside.”

The team has many ways of getting ready to play that they believe helps the team play its best.

“I think the quote in every huddle, told by Michele [Rickner, sr.], really helps our team get going before every game,” said Owens.

Neodesha, Jan. 30 - After a rough start, Humboldt came out victorious at Neodesha. The Cubs beat the Bluestreaks with a score of 65-35.

After winning by a large margin over Neodesha in their first meeting, Humboldt struggled and was up by only 11 to end the first half.

“We started out sloppy and slow,” said Trey Zartman, sr. “We came together better in the second half but still did not play as we are capable. I give [Neodesha] credit for slowing the game down. They have improved a lot since the first time we played them.”

Zartman led the team in scoring with 22 points. Sam Norris, jr., followed with 15 points and Josh Honas, sr., rounded out the top three with 13 points. Honas led the team in rebounds with seven and steals with three. However, he agrees that Humboldt could have played better in the beginning of the game.

“We started out pretty sluggishly,” said Honas. “We played better at the end.”

In the second half, the Cubs were able to pull away and beat the Bluestreaks. When asked what helped Humboldt in the second half, Norris said, “Energy. We knew we should have been blowing them out.”

Zartman agrees that Humboldt came out with more energy and intensity after halftime.

“I think our frustration of how bad we played in the first half sparked us to pick our intensity up and helped our focus,” said Zartman.
