Humboldt, Jan. 22 - Although they were one player short, the Humboldt Cubs collected a victory over the Cherryvale Chargers with a score of 58-31.

“We played really well,” said Thad Wells, so. “We did everything that we worked on in practice. We got back on defense fast and everyone talked and played good ball pressure.”

Trey Zartman, sr., led the team with 11 points followed closely by Brent Frederick, sr., and Cory Henshall, fr., with nine apiece.

Even though Humboldt’s offense was good, the real story was with their defense. The Cubs did not allow the Chargers to score until the second quarter.

“I feel that we came out with very good intensity, and we had even said in the locker room to not let them score in the first quarter,” said Frederick, sr. “This says a lot about our defense. We know if we play defense like that one every time, nobody can stop us.”

Every player that suited up was able to participate in the game against Cherryvale.

“We worked the ball around on offense and got everyone an easy shot,” said Frederick. “We also helped out a lot on the defensive end of the floor.”

The team played well together and collected a total of seven assists.

“We played together and that’s why we did so well and beat them by so much,” said Justin Kaufman, sr.

The team collected a total of 23 rebounds, nine of which were offensive rebounds. They also had a total of eleven steals.

“We did everything that we have worked on,” said Wells. “We didn’t really run too much stuff at them because there was no need to. But what we did run we executed really well. We out hustled them all night long and got easy lay-ups. There was no giving up.”

Eureka, Jan. 23 - On Tuesday evening, the Humboldt Cubs traveled to Eureka to take on the Tornadoes. The Cubs came out victorious with a score of 69-41.

When asked about having two blow-out games in a row, Cory Henshall, fr., said, “I don’t think it’s very good because we have easy games and then we will have hard games, and we won’t be ready for the hard ones. I think as long as I practice hard and don’t get down on myself, I will be okay.”

Henshall led the team with 15 points followed closely by Trey Zartman, sr., with 14 and Brent Frederick and Josh Honas, srs., with eight apiece.

“I’m glad that we played well enough to get the younger players in at the end of the game, but I would definitely rather play better competition,” said Zartman.

The Humboldt Cubs are looking forward to playing against the Fredonia Yellowjackets tonight.

“We are going to get in a couple good practices,” said Josh Honas, sr. “We’ve got to believe we can come out early and get a good lead on them.”

The junior varsity boys will start at 5:00 followed by both varsity teams.

Humboldt, Jan. 22- Although winter weather postponed the Cherryvale game from Jan. 12, the Chargers did come to Humboldt. However, the Lady Cubs lost the rescheduled game by four points, 62-68.

“The girls have to continue to work hard to improve,” said Jeff Wilkerson, head coach.

Kelci Owens, so., led the Lady Cubs with 18 points. Following after Owens was Michele Rickner, sr., scoring 16 points throughout the game. Also, Terra Woods, jr., added nine points for Humboldt’s score.

Rickner brought down six rebounds, while Sarah Works, jr., contributed five rebounds.

Randi Barnett, so., looks for an open teammate to pass the ball to in the game against Cherryvale. After
a strong comeback, the Humboldt Lady Cubs lost to the Cherryvale Chargers with a score of 62-68.

“I think we need to improve on starting out strong instead of waiting until the third quarter,” said Rickner.

The Lady Cubs had several steals from the Chargers.

Woods stole the ball four times during the game. Callie Umholtz, so., and Owens contributed one steal apiece as well.

“For improvement, I think fewer turnovers would be nice and taking more time on our offense could probably help to,” said Woods.

The top two scorers were sophomores Randi Barnett with 11 points and Kelci Owens with 12 points.

Woods led the team in both rebounds and steals with five rebounds and four steals.

“Our turnovers are the main problem,” said Woods. “We also need to slow down our offense and work the ball around a little.”

Even though many minor mistakes were made, the players recognize these faults and continue to train in order to master their games.

“We are counting on more wins and improvement for Substate,” said Woods.

The Lady Cubs will compete against Fredonia tonight.

Yates Center, Jan. 5 - As the community was optimistic about the new year, so was the Cubs varsity basketball team.

However, the first game of the year against their rivals, the Yates Center Wildcats, handed them a loss.

The Cubs played in a close game. The outcome came down to how they played their final minutes.

The Wildcats won by only two points, with the final score being 53-51.

The two leading scorers were Sam Norris, jr., who contributed 12 points and Josh Honas, sr., who contributed 13 points.

“We looked sloppy as we haven’t played in awhile,” said Norris. “We just didn’t get the job done.”

Norris made seven rebounds for the team and picked up two steals from the Wildcats.

“We need to improve on finishing teams when we are up by 10 points, and we were turning the ball over way too many times,” said Norris. “We need to get back on defense.”

Yates Center, Jan. 5 - Playing in another close game, the Lady Cubs lost to the Yates Center Wildcats with the final score of 28-30.

“I think we are doing fine,” said Sarah Works, jr. “I feel we are in shape; we know our plays, and we don’t get too down on each other or ourselves. We just need to learn how to put the ball in the basket better and have a little more confidence.”

Kelci Owens, so., scored 14 points and had two steals. Following close behind was Lenzie Boring, so., with seven points, three rebounds, and one steal.

“During the game I think I played pretty well,” said Boring. “I did have a couple of mistakes but my defense was really good. We have improved. For having a small team, we play well together but the major thing we have improved on is our dribbling and our defense.”

The Ladies struggled to stay in the game but came up short in the end.
