Humboldt, Dec. 11- The varsity boys won their
first home game of the year against the Neodesha Bluestreaks with a lop-sided
score of 62-19 in Tri-Valley League action.
By the end of the first quarter, the Cubs had jumped out quickly to lead the
game by 15 points. The halftime score of the game was 34-10.
Even though the Cubs were winning big at halftime, the team felt like they
had much to work on in the second half to help with upcoming games.
“We worked on holding a lead and keeping it down the stretch”
said Tevin Strack, fr.
The Cubs did hold onto their lead in the game. They only allowed Neodesha
to score nine more points in the second half and eventually ended the game
with a score of 62-19.
Cory Henshall, fr., scored 10 points while Josh Honas and Trey Zartman, srs.,
scored eight points each.
Tory Thomas, sr., handed out four assists to help his teammates score points.
“The best part of the game was when Cory got that first block and the
crowd went crazy,” said Strack.
Henshall blocked three shots followed closely by Drue Barton, sr., who had
one blocked shot.

and 18 on defense.
Honas retrieved seven rebounds. Cliff Adams, sr., was close behind; he pulled
down six rebounds. Henshall and Barton contributed to the rebound count with
five each.
“I think the team played well but we got big games coming up,”
said Henshall. “Hopefully, we can continue to do really well.”
Throughout the game, the Cubs also had a total of eight assists and 12 steals.
Zartman led the team by picking up three steals followed closely by Henshall
and Zach Cole, jr., with two steals apiece.
“The game was good,” said Cole. “I think that we played
really good. Everything that we did worked for us. Our defense was superb
and we held them to only 19 points. I was really exited for the win because
it gave us a good game to prepare us for harder games in the future.”

Moran, Dec. 5-8 - To open up the 2006-2007
basketball season, the Humboldt Cubs traveled to Moran to play in a preseason
tournament. Also participating in the tournament were West Elk, Marmaton Valley,
and Northeast Arma. The Cubs won the tournament with a 3-0 record.
On December 5, Humboldt beat West Elk with the score of 71-40.
“We played solid defense,” said Sam Norris, jr. “Everyone
was willing to share the wealth. We will win every game if we do that.”
Josh Honas, sr., led the team in scoring with 11 points followed closely by
Tory Thomas, sr., and Norris with 10 apiece.
“This was a good win,” said Honas. “It felt good to get
off on the right foot.”
With seven seniors playing this year, the underclassmen really looked for
their advice entering the first game of the season.
“I felt very nervous as first,” said Cory Henshall, fr., who ended
the night with three blocks. “Then Drue [Barton, sr.,] told me to just
play my game so I went out there and just played. I was very excited.”
The team was very happy to open up the season with a win.
“Anytime your leading scorer only scores 11 and the team scores 71,
then you know you played a solid game and everyone contributed,” said
Trey Zartman, sr.
In the second game of the tournament, the Humboldt Cubs took on the Marmaton
Valley Wildcats. The Cubs won with the score of 52-31.
“I felt we played great,” said Thomas. “We all played together
as one. One team; one dream.”
Zartman led the Cubs with 17 points followed by Thomas with 13 and Zach Cole,
jr., with 11. Thomas led the team in steals with four followed by Zartman
with three.

The Cubs went on to beat the Wildcats 52-31 and won
the tournament with a 3-0 record.
“Our strong point is that the team is really close,”
said Cole. “We have played together since the fourth grade.”
Even though the game was in Moran, many fans traveled to watch Humboldt play.
They held up signs and cheered the whole game.
“I love loud games,” said Zartman. “It keeps our team energized
and focused. I think that our team feeds off the crowd and having a crowd
of that size on the road is special. It didn’t feel like a road game
at all, which says a lot for the great support we get from this town.”
In the final game of the tournament, Humboldt beat Northeast Arma with a score
of 51-30 to take home the championship.
“Our defense was the main reason we won,” said Cliff Adams, sr.
“The help defense and rebounding prevented good shots and second chance
shots. Also we played as a team by getting the ball to the open man and then
shooting the ball at a high percentage.”
The team was led in scoring by Henshall with 12 followed by Norris and Thomas
with 10 apiece.
When asked about being the leading scorer in a varisty game as a freshman,
Henshall said, “At first I didn’t think I was going to get in
but I did. I was very nervous because we were playing for first. Then I just
cooled off and started playing my game.”
Barton and Henshall led the team with seven rebounds each.
“It felt great [to win the tournament] because we have been losing in
the years past even when we should have won,” said Barton. “It
feels nice to finally get it done.”
The Cubs ended the tournament without letting any team score over 40 points
against them.
“There were really two things [that helped the team win],” said
Jason Jones, head coach. “The defense was much better and we played
really well together. They didn’t worry about who got the credit and
who got more time on the court. They played as a team.”
