“I think our game against Uniontown was awesome. It was probably our best match all year,” said Rickner. “Everyone on the team did what they had to do. It would have been fun going to State, but that match was a good match to end my senior volleyball career on. I would not have wished it any different.”

Although the team’s season ended after their loss to Uniontown, Kim Jones, head coach, was positive about the outcome of the tournament and season.

“Our girls walked off of the court today full of pride. We played without question, the best volleyball we have played all season,” said Jones. “Four out of five games we served above 90 percent as a team and multiple girls broke their own records in stats for specific skills. The girls never doubted they could beat the number one seed, Uniontown just earned two more points than we did. Everything we have been working on all season fell into place and we played an incredible match.”

Humboldt, Oct. 20- In the second game of district play, Uniontown beat Humboldt 7-34.

“[We played] flat,” said Josh Poovey, sr. “We had nothing go right for us. From the beginning to the end, it was all Uniontown.”

Devin Onnen, so., had a seven yard touchdown at the end of the fourth quarter for Humboldt’s only points.

Humboldt had 122 rushing yards with 41 attempts. Uniontown had 285 rushing yards with 48 attempts.

“I think we could have played better, but nothing was going our way,” said Casey Womelsdorf, sr.

The Cubs had 134 rushing yards while the Eagles had 285 rushing yards. Humboldt’s total offense was 129 yards while Uniontown had 323 yards.

“I don’t think we played very well. I think we could have played better, and we definitely didn’t play to our full advantage,” said Devin Myers, jr.

The Cubs had a punting yardage of 128 yards while Uniontown had 112 punting yardage. The Cubs also had a punting average of 32 yards and the Eagles had a punting average of 28 yards.

“[It would have helped] if we would have came out with more fire,” said Poovey. “Better special teams would have helped us at the beginning of the game.”

The loss to the Uniontown Eagles will keep the Cubs from moving on to Bi-District.

“It was a hard loss for us seniors, but we are facing adversity now. We know we can’t make the playoffs but we have one game left. It is 6-3 or 7-2. It is up to us,” said Poovey.

This game was the last game of the 2006 football season and was also Parents’ Night. Nine seniors and their parents were recognized before the game.

“The team did very well this season,” said Jason Feeback, assistant coach. “Our seniors provided great leadership. It was great to send the seniors out on a winning note.”

Pittsburg, Oct. 3- In the first game of district playoffs, the Humboldt Cubs went on the road and suffered their first loss of the season to the Pittsburg-Colgan Panthers with a final score of 0-14.

“I think the game went really well,” said Justin Kaufman, sr. “We just needed to take care of the ball when we have it. Defensively, we did well.”

The first quarter ended with Colgan leading 0-7. Humboldt held Colgan to the same score to end the first half.

“I think we played pretty well except for the times when we got burned on defense,” said Sam Norris, jr.

Half way through the third quarter, Colgan scored again making the score 0-14. This was the final score of the game.

“We just didn’t get the job done,” said Norris. “That is all there is to it.”

In 33 rushing attempts Humboldt gained 113 yards. They also completed six passing attempts for a total of 56 yards. The Cubs gained 169 yards total offensively.

“Our kids played well against Colgan,” said Jason Feeback, assistant coach. “We had many chances to win the game but we did not capitalize on our opportunities. I am proud of the way our kids played against a team like Colgan.”

The Humboldt Cubs only allowed the Colgan Panthers to score 14 points, the fewest points they have scored in a game so far this year.

“I felt we had them on their heels for most of the night,” said Travis Burk, head coach. “I felt that it was a great opportunity to play Colgan.”
