Neodesha, Oct. 6 – After shutting out Fredonia, Humboldt pulled out yet another victory against Neodesha with a score of 37-21.
The Cubs got off to a slow start in the first quarter, allowing the Bluestreaks to score first.

“We didn’t play to the best of our ability, and we had some kids sick all week,” said Casey Womelsdorf, sr.

With the score of 0-7, Neodesha had a bad snap and Humboldt sacked the quarterback so the Cubs were able to score two points on a safety.

Just 15 seconds later, Drue Barton, sr., ran the ball in for a 12 yard touchdown, making the score 9-7.

“We should have come together a lot faster,” said Devin Onnen, so.

In the second quarter, Tory Thomas, sr., completed a pass to Andrew Whitaker, so., for a 68 yard touchdown. Thomas also ran the ball in for a one-yard touchdown. Humboldt ended the first half with a score of 23-7.

In the third quarter, Thad Wells, so., scored on a 22-yard run, making the score 30-7. Neodesha was not done. They scored with three seconds left in the third quarter to make the score 30-14.

During the fourth quarter, Onnen scored a five-yard touchdown. This made the score 37-14. However, the Bluestreaks scored last, making the final score 37-21.

The Cubs gained a total of 172 rushing yards in 28 attempts. The team completed five passes in six attempts and threw one interception, giving them a total of 102 passing yards. Humboldt had 274 total offensive yards.

By defeating Neodesha, Humboldt did not only win a game to make their record 6-0, but they won the title of Tri-Valley League Champions. The Cubs have won other league titles such as the Three Rivers League, but they have not won the Tri-Valley League for 38 years.

“I’m really excited know that [we are Tri-Valley League champions] because it has not happened for 38 years,” said Wells.

celebrate the victory and the Tri Valley League Championship.

The Cubs have scored a combined 195 points this season and have only given up 63 points. They are one of only two schools that have allowed under 100 points all year in the Tri-Valley League.

“I’m really proud to be a part of this and a part of these kids’ lives,” said Travis Burk, head coach. “Anytime you win a league championship it is exciting and an honor. It was a goal we had in the spring. Now our goal is to win the playoffs.”

Humboldt will take on Pittsburg-Colgan tonight at 7:00 p.m. in Pittsburg. Colgan is also undefeated this year. They are considered to be Humboldt’s toughest challenge so far this season.

“Being Tri-Valley League champs means a lot to our team; it is something we have all worked for since we have gotten into high school,” said Drue Barton, sr. “This year we weren’t suppose to win many games at all according to people and now that we have won [the title], it makes it that much better, but winning the TVL doesn’t mean we can stop there and the season is over; we need to work hard to go further.”

The Cubs beat the Yellowjackets with the score of 32-0.

The Humboldt football players had eight first downs throughout the game. In the 32 rushing attempts that were made, Humboldt gained 170 yards and lost nothing. After the game was over, the players had completed four out of five passes for an 80 percent completion percentage. The team gained 93 yards through the air.

“I think we did well by not giving up on defense when they got inside the 20 yard line,” said Sam Norris, jr. “The offensive line blocked well, [and] we got a lot of rushing yards. We were in the best shape. That is why we took them in the second half and came together as a team.”

The team intercepted three of Fredonia’s passes and recovered three of their fumbles. Humboldt only lost two fumbles to the Yellowjackets.

Tory Thomas and Tarryn Young, srs., stand together after being
announced as this year’s Homecoming King and Homecoming Queen.

“I would say the key reason [that Fredonia didn’t score] was that we put pressure on their quarterback. Our kids had a lot of desire to shut them out,” said Travis Burk, head coach.

The Homecoming ceremony was held during halftime of the Fredonia game.

The Homecoming King was Tory Thomas, sr., and the Homecoming Queen was Tarryn Young, sr.

The king and queen each received a football signed by the football and volleyball teams and an engraved keychain or bracelet.
