New Teachers Hired

Several students were recognized at the beginning of the April
9 Board of Education meeting. Anna Setter and Hunter Murrow, fifth graders,
each showed a PowerPoint presentation about a president. The Board recognized
the power lifting team for being 2A State champions. Katie Hauser, sr., was
congratulated on being a National Merit Finalist and for achieving a 35 on
her ACT. Last year’s yearbook class was recognized for being in the
Jostens Look Book, something only 475 out of thousands of Jostens yearbooks
do.
Three teachers were hired for next year. Prism Glynn will be the computer
applications teacher; David Taylor the elementary school physical education
teacher; and Kori Wells the elementary school music teacher. Terry Meadows,
the current elementary school music teacher, was approved to move over to
the middle school and high school music position.
Construction is ongoing. According to Roger Field from Prosser/Wilbert, the
project is still on track to be complete April 30. As construction is winding
down, Ed Carlson from Hollis & Miller will be creating a final punch list
of what projects need to be corrected and what still needs to be completed.
Bleachers are currently being installed and should be completed next week,
as well as lockers in the locker rooms. The elevator is installed. Restrooms
are mostly completed, as are the sidewalks around the field house. Two hold
ups are waiting for the sanitary sewer to be hooked up to the city line, and
for the finish on the gym floor to be done satisfactorily.
Field also said the floor of room 303 in the high school sounds “a lot
better. Actually, there is no sound.” Most of the other renovations
in the room are also complete.
The connecting link between the middle school and high school is also scheduled
to be complete by the end of April.
The Board tentatively scheduled a formal dedication for the field house for
May 6 at 2:00 p.m. They will also have an open house that day from 2:00 p.m.
until 4:00 p.m.
K.B. Criss, middle school and high school principal, said that he had secured
$12,000 for cardio equipment. His final plan for the equipment will cost $24,000.
He has more ideas of where to find funding.
Criss and Kay Bolt, elementary school principal, said that they would be releasing
preliminary results from the state assessments on May 1. Both also gave honor
roll statistics from the third nine weeks. Anywhere from 59 percent to 67
percent of elementary school students were on the honor roll for their class,
and anywhere from 78 to 84 percent in the middle and high schools.
Criss reminded the Board that graduation will be May 12 at 5:00 p.m
Construction crews are making progress on the bond issue projects. The gym floor has been painted. Currently, crews have covered the gym floor with the parts necessary to complete the bleachers. The concession area has been painted and is more spacious than what has been available at basketball games. Rolls of the track surface have been delivered but are not installed yet. The surface is black with orange flakes. The link between the middle school and high school has been enclosed and doors installed.. Both the field house and the connecting link are scheduled to be done at the end of April. A formal dedication of the community field house is scheduled for May 6 at 2:00 p.m. Community members will also be able to tour other bond issue projects that day from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
