During the summer months, construction crews could be seen around
the high school working on various projects both inside and outside the building.
“Our summer maintenance staff did an outstanding job of having our building
cleaned and ready by the time school started,” said K.B. Criss, high
school principal.

Some classrooms have changed locations. The weight room is now where the band

Keeping Cool.
This unit is part of the new ground source heating and
cooling system.
“I love the space. It’s one of the biggest weight rooms in southeast
Kansas,” said Travis Burk, weights and conditioning instructor. “[The
students] love it too. They are not crammed in and are able to get more work
done. It also increases the safety of our students.”
The auditorium is now the classroom for band and vocal music and is mostly
completed. The second set of double doors needs to be installed yet, as well
as the air conditioning system.

Working Hard.
Crews work on steel beams for the structure of the new
community field house.
Construction began this summer and is scheduled to be completed in February.
“Once the auditorium is completed, it will be a really
nice room for us,” said Shelby Huddleston, band and choir director.
Administration offices should be moved to what was the weight room by October
1.

Play out.
Band members practice in a new location this year. The
auditorium was
renovated to be the music classroom.
“I feel like we are making progress,” said Criss.
“When you look at the big picture, we have done a good job of taking
care of most of the issues at our high school.”
Criss says that other projects should “be phased in and completed over
a three to five year period.”

Office work.
Administration offices are being moved to the weight
room. Construction
is schedules to be done by October.
These projects include the remodeling of classrooms consisting of new walls,
ceilings, and marker boards; roofing; and the painting of the lockers.
Construction on the community field house will be ongoing throughout the school
year. Superintendent Bob Heigele says the projected completion date of the
field house is February 21, and possibly sooner if all construction goes well.
Even though school has just started, the different classes are
already getting things ready for the rest of the year. Each class has elected
officers, and many classes have other projects as well.
Freshmen officers are President Christian Hollon, Vice-President Cory Henshall,
Treasurer Garron Gean, Secretary Bryce Smith, and StuCo Representatives Elijah
Friederich and Mary Hauser
.
Sophomore officers are President Bailey Myers, Vice-President Lenzie Boring,
Treasurer Shelley Herder, Secretary Callie Umholtz, and StuCo Representatives
Todd Hauser and Kelci Owens.
Sophomores are starting off the year by ordering class rings on September
13.
“I feel like this [ordering class rings] is what makes us different
than all the other classes,” said Alana Kinzle, so.
Officers for juniors are President Hali Dawson, Vice-President Tessa Coronado,
Treasurer Jenell Baker, Secretary Adrienne Gutierrez, and StuCo Representatives
Chas Wille and Sarah Works.
Juniors are getting ready for prom. Magazine sales have begun, and will continue
until September 22.
“I think the magazine sales should go very well with all the people
we have in our class,” said Joe Ewing, jr.
Senior officers are President Josh Poovey, Vice-President Mandie Lewis, Treasurer
Janelle Herder, Secretary Hilary Bartlett, and StuCo Representatives Trey
Zartman and Kellee Frederick.
Orders for graduation announcements and other senior items were on September
13.
“It’s exciting! As ready to be a senior as I was, it [this year]
is already going fast,” said Herder.
Board members toured school buildings at their August 28 meeting.
After the tour, board members conducted the business portion of their meeting.
The Board approved a lease purchase agreement with SunTrust and also approved
a bid package for electrical upgrades in the district.
Board members rescinded a resolution and then adopted a new one to change
the district to an at-large district when electing board members. The ballot
language for the November ballot was also approved.
The Board also approved the ANW Interlocal Agreement.
The progress of the community field house was discussed at the September 11
meeting.
Bids were opened for other items that need to be done, including enclosing
the walkway between the middle and high school. The companies in charge of
the renovations are looking into bids to help the district with concerns about
the roofs of district buildings.
Changing the date of graduation for the class of 2007 was approved. Graduation
will be held on Saturday, May 12 at 5 p.m. The senior class had previously
voted to change graduation to the new date and time.
FFA members were approved to travel out of state to the National Convention
in Indianapolis, Indiana. The trip will be in October, and the district will
provide a vehicle for the group. Heigele also reported that the first shipment
for the greenhouse has been received.
Building principals reported to the board that all buildings met AYP on last
spring’s tests.
