Golfers place at Cedar Brook course

Iola, Apr. 24 - Playing on their home practice field, the Cub golfers took ninth out of a total of 13 places at the Cedar Brook Invitational Tournament in Iola.

Scoring highest for the team was Adam Headley, sr., taking 25th out of 73 golfers swinging a 94, which also earned him his own medal. Next in line was Jordan Young, sr., who took 33rd with a score of 96.

Following behind Young was Blake Moyers, sr., in 49th swinging a 105. Also, Marty Hebler, so., and Josh Poovey, jr., each swung 106 taking 50th and 52nd, respectively.

Finally, Zach Cole, so., took 69th after swinging a 122.

Iola, May 8 - Tri-Valley League golfers competed at Cedar Brook golf course in Iola this year, where Humboldt sent six golfers.

Moyers and Cole placed the highest for the Cubs. They tied for 11th place with a score of 91. Headley was next for the Cubs. Headley’s score of 101 put him in a tie for 27th place.

Poovey and Hebeler rounded out the scoring for the Cubs. The boys placed 39th and 40th with rounds of 117 and 124, respectively.

The team placed fifth overall out of the seven league teams that were in attendance.


Boys win Lindsey Friederich Memorial Tourney

Humboldt, Apr. 21- Participating in the annual Lindsey Friederich Memorial Tournament, both the softball and baseball teams made it to the championship games against the Iola Fillies and Mustangs.

Despite the girls outstanding record, the boys were the ones to bring home the ultimate victory.

The Lady Cubs won their first game against the Neodesha Bluestreaks, 13-2, in just five innings of play.

Whitney Piley, sr., pitched all five innings with two runs, three hits, and walked one person. Whitney Piley made up for it, however, throwing a total of nine strikeouts.

Offensively, the girls had three singles, one double, and one out-of-the-park, grand-slam hit by Cara Tilman, sr.
“Whitney threw a good game for us against Neodesha. Cara helped us out in the second inning with a grand-slam homerun,” said Brad Piley, head coach.

Neody, but suffered their first defeat to Iola, 0-5, giving them with second place in the tournament.

Whitney Piley also led the team with six stolen bases and managed three of the team’s RBIs, which came up to be a total of 11.

Unfortunately, the girls could not get the win in their championship game to the Fillies with a final score of 0-5.

Sarah Riebel, sr., pitched all seven innings, giving away five runs, seven hits, and one walk. However, she well compensated for the loss with 13 total strikeouts.

Offensively, the Ladies had a total of three singles again, one triple, and managed two stolen bases.

This game was the Ladies’ first loss of the season, which moved them to a 11-1 record.

“This was our poorest defensive game this year, and Iola took advantage of those errors. It seemed as if we hit the ball right to their defense, and when we hit the balls in gaps, their defense made great plays,” said Brad Piley.

The Cubs’ team also managed to blow the Neodesha Bluestreaks away in their first game of the tournament with a final score of 10-0.

Tyler Thomas, sr., pitched each of the total five innings. and although he gave away four hits, he attempted a comeback with three total strikeouts.

Brent Frederick, jr., and Garrett Fitzmaurice, sr., each had a double in the game, while Tyler Thomas went three for three with one double and one stolen base.

“We played better than we have all season,” said Jeremy Weilert, head coach. “We got timely hits and made plays in the field. One of the most important things was we made no errors. We also got the bats going. We were 14-23 at the plate.”

The Cubs proceeded to win their next game, taking the championship home with a score of 7-2 against the Iola Mustangs.

“I was very proud of the way our guys played with enthusiasm. Our fans were great and really helped us out. The softball team and the student body were there to cheer us on. It was a great atmosphere,” said Weilert.

Tory Thomas, jr., pitched each of the seven innings, sacrificing two runs, two hits, and five walks, but throwing a total of seven strikeouts.

Tyler Thomas went one for four with a double, and Shane Stanley, sr., went four for four, with a homerun in the fifth inning.

“This was a great game between two evenly matched teams,” said Weilert.

Fredonia, Apr. 21– Continuing their fantastic season, the track teams managed to place in their Fredonia meet. The girls were able to carry off eighth, while the boys grabbed ninth place overall.

Taking individual places for the boys team were Mitchell Dewey, sr., who secured second in the shot put, and Casey Womelsdorf, jr., who was able to make fourth place in the long jump.

Joab Barr, so., brought home fourth in the 3200m, and Sam Norris, so., was able to take fifth place in the 110m high hurdles as well as fifth in the 300m hurdles. Womelsdorf also placed fifth in the triple jump, while Josh Honas, jr., took fifth in the 200m.

For the girls, Sarah Works, so., and Kristin North, sr., placed in both the 300m and 100m hurdles, grabbing fifth and fourth in both respectively. North also took second in the triple jump and sixth in the 200m.

Burlington, Apr. 25– In their fifth meet of the season, the track teams once again proved sucessful taking fifth place in the boys division, while the girls took seventh overall.

Placing for the girls were Works, Shelly Herder, fr., and North. Works placed fourth in the 100m hurdles and fifth in the 300m hurdles. North came just after her getting fifth in the 100m and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles. North also took fifth in the triple jump, while Herder was able to grab sixth place in the high jump.

As for the boys, Norris was able to snag fifth place in the 110m hurdles and fourth in the 300m hurdles. Also, Honas received fourth place in the 200m dash and third place in the 400m dash. Scott Sollars, fr., attained sixth place in the 300m hurdles, while Barr also placed third in the 3200m.

Dewey grabbed sixth in the discus throw and third in the shot put, while T.J. Shelton, jr., followed closely taking fourth.

Womelsdorf was able to take a place as well, nabbing fourth place in the long jump, while Zach Cole, so., came in sixth. Womelsdorf also made fourth in the triple jump.

Neodesha, Apr. 27– Attending yet another meet, the girls’ track team walked away with sixth place overall. Placement for the boys was not available.

Individually, Shelton placed fifth in the shot put, while Cole placed third in the triple jump. Norris took fifth in the 110m hurdles and fourth in the 300m hurdles.

Honas acquired third place in both the 200m and 400m, while Barr brought in third in the 3200m. Also, Andrew Hill, fr., placed fifth in the 3200m. The boys 4x800 and 4x400 relay teams both placed fourth.

For the girls, Works placed second in the 100m hurdles and third in the 300m hurdles. North placed third in the triple jump and stood out taking first in the 300m hurdles. The girls 4x400 relay team placed sixth overall.

Uniontown, May 2– In their seventh meet of the season, the track team competed in its first junior varsity competition. No overall team places were available.

Placing in this meet for the Cubs was Sollars with a second place finish in the 110m hurdles and fourth in the 300m hurdles. Devin Onnen, fr., managed to take sixth in the shot put and fourth in the javelin. Hill received second place in the 1600m, while Micah Poovey, fr., achieved fifth in the 300m hurdles. The boys’ 4x400 team placed third.

Placing for the girls was Karna Carlson, so., with a first place finish in the high jump and taking sixth in the long jump. The girls’ 4x400 relay team was also able to grab third place overall.

Cherryvale, May 4– Finishing out its regular season meets in Cherryvale last Wednesday, the boys received an outstanding second place overall, while the girls took sixth place.

In the girls department, North was able to snatch first place in the 100m hurdles, second in the 300m hurdles, and third in the triple jump, while Herder received fourth in the high jump.

Works took second in the 100m hurdles and third in the 300 meter hurdles. The girls’ 4x400 relay team received sixth place.

As for boys, Norris received third place in both the 110m hurdles and the 300m hurdles, and Trey Zartman, jr., received third place in the 800m with Joe Ewing, so., grabbing sixth. Dewey took sixth place in the shot put, and Barr got fifth place in both the 1600m and 3200m.

Cole and Womelsdorf tooksixth and fourth in the triple jump and fourth and second in the long jump, respectively. Shelton tooksixth in the discus and fourth in the javelin throw with Onnen ahead in fifth.

Honas scored third in both the 400m and 200m. Hill placed fourth in the 3200m, and the boys’ 4x100 team snagged fifth. Also, the 4x800 team placed first, and the 4x400 team placed second.


Ladies split with Chargers

Cherryvale, Apr. 25- Losing only their second game of the season, the Lady Cubs split a win and a loss in a double header against the Cherryvale Chargers. Final scores of both games were a win of 3-2 and an 0-5 loss.

In the first game, Sarah Riebel, sr., pitched all seven innings giving three hits, two walks, two runs, and 10 strikeouts.

Also in the first game, Whitney Piley, sr., led the team in the batting area with three total hits.

“I felt that I had a solid two games at the plate,” said Piley. “We hit the ball well, but could not find the holes. I do not care who hits the runs in, just that we get them.”

their split with the Chargers, the Lady Cubs moved to a 12-2 overall record.

Unfortunately, in their second the game the Ladies fell short to the Chargers 0-5.

Riebel pitched all seven innings in this game, as well as having a total of eight hits and five runs. Riebel also pitched 10 strikeouts throughout the game.

“In the second game, we got down, missed our chance to score, then got in a hole we could not get back out of,” said Riebel.

Overall, the Ladies only had two singles, one each hit by Kayla Owens and Cara Tilman, srs. There were three stolen bases, two by Tilman and one by Owens.

“[Cherryvale and Humboldt] were both undefeated in League and we ended up splitting a double header,” said Brad Piley, head coach. “The first game, Whitney led us with three hits. In the second game, we only had two hits, which is not going to win you very many games.”

JV Cubs take first win

Humboldt, Apr. 22- Pulling off their first win of the season, the junior varsity boys split a win and a loss against the Chanute Comets, winning the first game with a final score of 3-2. Unfortunately, the Cubs ended up losing 10-15.

In the first game, Andrew Whitaker, fr., pitched all five innings, giving away a total of only two runs, two hits, and two walks. However, Whitaker also pitched five strikeouts.

“Whitaker pitched a good game; I was pleased with the way we played in the field,” said Jeremy Weilert, head coach.

Only pitching one inning in the second game, Whitaker allowed one run, two walks, and managed one strikeout. Also pitching was Josh Poovey, jr., for one third of an inning, giving two runs, two hits, and one strikeout. Finally, Thad Wells, fr., pitched only three innings with one run and two walks, also pulling off one strikeout.

“We hit the ball well, but so did they. They were able to get the timely hits,” said Weilert.
