Humboldt falls short to Burlington

Humboldt, April 3 - At the team’s first home doubleheader of the season, the Cubs’ baseball team was defeated by Burlington in both games.

Despite the fact that Derek Wrestler, sr., hit a home run to left center, the Cubs had difficulty putting together offense in their first game. Wrestler’s home run was the only score in the Cubs’ 1-14 defeat. Tyler Thomas, sr., hit a triple, but that was the only other hit of the game for the Cubs.

Tory Thomas, jr., pitched for two innings. Tory Thomas allowed five runs and five hits, giving four walks and making two strikeouts. Garrett Fitzmaurice, sr., finished the last three innings of the game. Fitzmaruice allowed nine runs and seven hits, but only gave one walk and had two strikeouts.

In the second game, Fitzmaurice was the only Cub who scored in the team’s 2-17 defeat. Fitzmaurice also had two stolen bases. Tyler Thomas had the only hit of the game.

“ Playing a team like Burling really let us know that we are not as good as we thought we were,” said Fitzmaurice.

Tyler Thomas was the first pitcher of the game. He went three innings, and allowed 10 runs and seven hits. Tyler Thomas gave four walks and had one strikeout. Wrestler pitched the last inning and allowed seven runs on six hits, with four walks and two strikeouts.

“ We played a really good Burlington team tonight,” said Jeremy Weilert, head coach.

“ In these next few weeks, we need to practice hard and there is no doubt in my mind that we can be a very good baseball team,” said Fitzmaurice.

Burlington, April 4- The junior varsity Cubs lost both of their games to Burlington, just as their varsity counterparts did.

In the first game, the Cubs came close to winning, but lost with a final score of 10-11.

Anthony Sweeney, sr., pitched four innings and Andrew Honas, fr., pitched for the final inning.

Going into the fourth inning, Humboldt was down 7-0. However, they scored 10 runs to draw ahead. Burlington came back with one run in the fouth and three in the fifth to win the game.

The Wildcats shut out the Cubs in the second game. Burlington scored four runs to start off the game and added one more run in the fourth inning to seal the deal.

Andrew Whitaker, fr., and Thad Wells, fr., pitched for the game.

“ We need to be more consistent with the bats and play good defense,”’ said Devin Myers, so.


Track meet goes well for Cubs

Central Heights, March 31 - Traveling to Central Heights, the track team felt confident for the opening meet of the season.

On the boys’ side, T.J. Shelton, jr., placed fifth in the shot put with a distance of 40’9.5”. Also, Josh Honas, jr., had a fourth place finish in the 400m dash and placed fourth in the 200m dash.

Sam Norris, so., placed third in the 300m hurdles, and Joab Barr, so., also placed for the boys’ side with third in the 1600m run with a time of 5:21.5. Barr also placed fourth in the 2300m run with a time of 11:56.47.

“ I think that the team could have done better, but for our first meet, we did well,” said Barr.

For the girls’, Sarah Works, so., placed third in the 100m hurdles and fifth in the 300m hurdles. Senior Kristin North received fourth place in the 100m hurdles.

“ Our girls did really well, and we plan to work harder to prepare for our next track meet,” said Jason Feeback, girls’ coach.

The HHS boys’ relay team placed fourth overall in the 800m relay.

A total of 18 schools competed in the Central Heights track meet.

“ This track meet really challenged us, and we did well for the first meet of the season,” said Eric Carlson, coach.


Varsity boys win opening game

Neodesha, March 28 - Starting the season off with a win, the Cubs pulled off two successful games against the Neodesha Bluestreaks last Tuesday with final scores of 18-4 and 17-4.

Pitching for the entire first game was Tyler Thomas, sr., allowing only four runs and six hits. Tyler Thomas also had four walks, but pulled off a total of seven strikeouts. Garrett Fitzmaurice, sr., had three singles and two doubles, while Shane Stanley, sr., managed two singles and one double. Also, Tyler Thomas had two singles, one double, as well as two stolen bases, with Derek Wrestler, sr., making two singles.

“ Tyler pitched a great game. He allowed his defense to make plays behind him and was able to pitch all seven innings. I am proud of the way we played, but we still have a long way to go to be the team we want to be,” said Jeremy Weilert, head coach.

In the second game, Tory Thomas, jr., pitched five innings with five strikeouts. Fizmaurice pitched two innings, allowing two runs and had three strikeouts. Fitzmaurice batted one double, while Tyler Thomas made one single, one double, one homerun, and also managed to steal one base. Wrestler had three singles and Stanley made two singles and a double.

“ We will need to continue to hit the ball to win games. Tory and Fitzmaurice did a great job pitching, though,” said Weilert.


Raiders leave Cubs empty handed

Frontenac, March 31 - The varsity boys’ baseball team traveled all the way to Frontenac, but only to be left dissatisfied with two losses against the Raiders.

The final score for the first game was 4-14, while the second game ended at 2-5.

Both Tyler Thomas and Garrett Fitzmaurice, srs., pitched during the first game. Tyler Thomas pitched for five of the six innings and managed to pitch six strikeouts. Fitzmaurice pitched the remaining inning.

Fitzmaurice managed to get one single and one double, while Tyler Thomas made one single, one triple, and took a single stolen base.

Shane Stanley, sr., went 2-3 at the plate with two singles, while Brent Frederick, jr., went 1-2 with one single. Also contributing to the team was senior Stephan Nickell, who went 1-2 with another single.

“ We started out the game like we had wanted to. We just did not continue to play that way. Frontenac had two big innings,” said Jeremy Weilert, head coach.

In the second game, the Cubs played a lot harder, but unforunately, still fell short with a score of 2-5.

Fitzmaurice pitched one inning during this game, while Tory Thomas pitched the remaining five. Tory Thomas pulled off a total of six strikeouts.

Tyler Thomas went 2-2 at the plate and had two singles, and Fitzmaurice went 1-3 at the plate with one single.

Stanley went 1-3 with one double, as Andrew Whitaker, fr., managed to pull off one single.

“ We played a much better game in the field during game two,” said Weilert. “Our bats went a little cold, but we were still in the game. Tory did a nice job keeping Frontenac off balance. I really that thought we could get the split, but we lost two games to a really good team.”


Ladies compete against ‘Cats, win games 3-2, 3-0

Humboldt, April 3- Although it may be early in the season for the Lady Cubs, their capability to dominate the field has already shown potential to develop them into an absolute powerhouse.

Walking away from two games against the varsity Burlington Lady Cats, Humboldt took two wins, 3-2 and 3-0, without any hesitation.

Starting pitcher Sarah Riebel, sr., resumed her place on the field for the entirety of both games, throwing a total of 21 strikeouts and allowing only four hits. With only two runs against her, Riebel gave Burlington no walks and forced them to fight for their bases.

“ I think I did okay, but of course I could have done better, as there is always room for improvement in anything you do,” said Riebel.

During the first game against Burlington, Mallory Mueller, sr., confidently stole a total of five bases, a significant lead over teammate Kellee Frederick, jr., who slipped in a total of two. Single steals came from Cara Tilman, sr., and Tessa Coronado, so.

Tilman, Piley, and Coronado each made a single base hit, while Riebel made two. In addition to her single, Piley also chipped in a double. Both Piley and Tilman made it around the bases to home, contributing two runs and one run, respectively.

With the score of the second varsity game against Burlington not as close as the first, the Humboldt girls managed to squeak out all three runs during the first inning of play. Runs were attributed to Riebel, Coronado, and Kelci Owens, fr., who came in past home plate to score.

Terra Woods, so., was the frontrunner of the team when it came to stealing bases, as she brought in four next to Mueller’s two, while Tilman and Owens contributed single steals.

Riebel contributed a total of three singles, while Mueller, Owens, and Coronado individually made singles of their own.

“ After a big win Friday night, the [varsity] girls did not play as well as they could have and still came away with two wins against a quality team,” said head coach Brad Piley.

A distance of 15 points filled the gap between Humboldt and Burlington’s junior varsity teams, with the Lady Cubs racking in a win, 28-13.


Freshman Lenzie Boring pitched for the entire junior varsity game, managing nine strikeouts, but allowing 22 walks in the process.


During the game, Britany Sellman, Staci Collins, and Deedra Barnett, sos., lead the team with singles, bringing in five, four, and three, respectively.

Once again showing dominance on the field, the JV Ladies took home two more wins after traveling to Burlington on April 4, with final scores of 16-5 and 8-7.

“ Our hitting struggled in the second game, but our base running is improving with every game,” said Teri Shaughnessy, junior varsity coach. “The girls were down by four in the last inning and came back to take the win. We had some key hits in that last inning.”


Golf players place fifth at Burlington Tournament

Burlington, April 4- Golf participants earned a fifth place finish overall at Burlington on Tuesday, April 4.

The team played against several other schools including Jayhawk Linn, Fredonia, Burlington, Yates Center, Anderson County, Prairie View, Neodesha, Crest, and Pleasanton.

Senior Jordan Young led the way by shooting an 85 earning eleventh place overall. Martey Hebeler, so., scored an 88, which got him 16th place, while Blake Moyers, sr., and Zach Cole, so., took 21st and 22nd by tying with a 91. Adam Headley, sr., shot a 93 which earned him 25th, and finally Daniel Weilert, so., shot a 148 earning 62nd place.

The placing went to 66th.

“ We have not had much practice, but we are doing alright in the tournaments that we have played in,” said Young.

The team’s next tournament will take place at Fredonia’s golf course on April 15.

Lady Cubs invade Raiders

Frontenac, March 31- The Humboldt Lady Cubs secured two more wins for the season over the Frontenac Lady Raiders last Friday. Scores for the first game were 3-0, with the second game at 5-0.

Sarah Riebel, sr., pitched ten strikeouts in the first game, allowing only two hits, and in the second game had four strikeouts, with three hits.

In the first game, Cara Tilman, sr., had one triple and one single while Riebel hit two singles. Seniors Mallory Mueller and Whitney Piley each came in with one single. Coming out on top of the evening was Tilman with four steals, followed by Mueller and Piley with one steal each.

During the second game, Piley had two singles and Riebel had one double. Not far behind were Tessa Coronado and Terra Woods, sos., with one single each. Tilman and Piley tied with stolen bases with one each.

Ladies defeat Neodesha

Neodesha, March 28 - Winning their first games of the season playing a total of only nine innings, the Lady Cubs softball team beat the Neodesha Bluestreaks.

In the first game, the girls blew the Bluestreaks away with a score of 15-0 in only five innings. Sarah Riebel, sr., pitched all five innings, had two walks, and pulled off ten strikeouts. In the second game, Riebel pitched four innings having one run, one walk, and seven strikeouts. The Lady Cubs accounted for seven singles, two doubles, two triples, and seven RBI’s in the game.

“ Sarah Riebel pitched two great games last night. She had very good control for her first two games of the year. We have been working very hard on our batting, and it showed last night,” said head coach Brad Piley.

The junior varsity Lady Cubs racked up another 21-4 win in only four innings against the Bluestreaks. The JV girls had seven singles and one double hit.

Golfers start season well

Erie, April 3 - Humboldt golfers finished in fourth place during their first tournament at Erie, which was held at the Prairie Ridge golf course.

Sophomore Martey Hebeler was the only golfer who was able to place by swinging an 85 and securing fifth place.

Adam Headley, sr., came in with a 92, while Blake Moyers and Jordan Young, srs., both made a score of 95. Zach Cole, so., made a 97, while Josh Poovey, jr., rounded out the group with a 101.

“ On Monday, I feel that I played very well for it being our first tournament, and it was early in the season. I feel that I did well as an individual, and our team also performed nicely,” said Hebeler.
