Eureka, Feb. 17 - Fighting until the bitter end, the varsity girls’ team unfortunately faced another loss.

The girls played at Eureka on February 16 with an ending score of 34-46. Though the points could have been discouraging, the girls managed to keep their hopes up.

Unable to score any points at all in the first quarter, the girls made up for it in the second quarter, making a total of 19 shots.

The third quarter offered eight points, while the fourth quarter added seven more to the total. However, this was not enough to overcome the Eureka team, who had scored nine points in the first quarter, 13 in the second, 10 during the third, and finally 14 for the fourth quarter.

Throughout the entire game, even when faced with difficulties, the girls strove to perform at their best. Kristin North, sr., alone was able to score a total of 14 points. These included five two-point shots and four successful free throws. Mallory Mueller, sr., contributed a three-point shot, a two-pointer, and a free throw to her team’s score, which added up to a sum of six points.

Also contributing were Kayla Owens, sr., and Michele Rickner, jr., who each added another four points to the score with two shots each.

Rickner scored two two-point shots, while Owens made a two-pointer and two free throws. Sarah Riebel, sr., scored a free throw, while another two-point shot was scored by Maegan Wall, sr.

Coming back from a tough first quarter, the girls scored consistently from the second quarter on. The girls proved themselves to be truly capable, making up for their lack of points during the first quarter.

Striving to succeed, even when things might look dim, the Lady Cubs’ varsity team has shown that they are truly a determined team. They play to their peak performance in every condition provided to them.

Humboldt, Feb. 14 – The varsity Lady Cubs suffered a close loss of 48-45 against Cherryvale, on Valentine’s Day.

Leading scorers for the girls’ team were Kristin North, sr., with 10 points, and Maegan Wall, sr., following up with nine.

“In the first quarter of play, we could not get a good look at the basket, which made it very difficult in the second half. However, we seemed to look like the team we really are later on,” said Wall.

The Lady Cubs made over 50 percent of their free throw attempts, making six out of the team’s 10 total in the game.

The girls went into the second half trailing by a score of 16-33, but the Ladies then got it together and showed a more determined effort. The team outscored the Chargers 29-16 in the second half of game play.

“We talked about what we needed to do on the floor to get back in the ball game. All of the seniors knew it could have been our last home game ever, so we said ‘we are not giving it up without a fight,’” said Kayla Owens, sr.

Defensively, the Lady Cubs kept the Lady Chargers to only 10 of their points in the paint.

“In the first quarter, we were running a 3-2 defense and it killed us. For the second half, we came out in man-to-man defense and dominated. In the third, we got after it. Everybody was hustling, and we were beating them up and down the floor,” said Cara Tilman, sr.

This being the end of the regular season, play will resume during the girls’ Sub-State game on February 29.

Right behind in scoring was Sam Norris, so., with two shots and three three-point shots, making 13 points of his own.

“After the Neodesha game, we were coming together really well, but then we lost four in a row, and we started to split apart a little bit. I hope we play the same for the rest of the games this season,” said Norris.

Trey Zartman, jr., was next in line, making nine more points for the team with three three-points shots as well.

“We had a good competitive practice going into Eureka,” said Zartman. “Our team chemistry in the first half was back to where it was after the Neodesha game at home. The second half was not as great, just because we wanted to keep the lead and win the game. It felt great and hopefully we can keep it up in the tough game against Fredonia.”

Humboldt, Feb. 14 - This year’s last home game ended in the varsity Cubs’ loss to their rivals, the Cherryvale Chargers, with a score of 63-59.

Leading in scoring was Trey Zartman, jr., with 18 points total.

“I think it was a mental thing. We have had leads in all of those games we have lost. We just need to learn to finish games. At the end of the game, we need to buckle down and finish our opponent off. We have not done that. We just need to boost our confidence. I think we will have it figured out,” said Zartman.

Following closely behind Zartman was Josh Honas, jr., who managed to score 16 more points of his own.

“We have to have better defense. We can not control anything other than hustle and defense,” said Honas.

For Anthony Sweeney, the only senior this year, this loss seems to be tough to get over.

“It felt pretty depressing. Especially since we have the potential to win most of the games that we lose. We just need to get it together,” said Sweeney.
