Humboldt, Jan. 27- Sweetheart week is a time when Humboldt High students show their school spirit, attend the dance, and see who won Sweetheart King and Queen. However, another important thing during Sweetheart week is the game, especially winning it.

This year for Sweetheart, the Cubs hosted the Fredonia Yellow Jackets and pulled off a close win with a score of 60-58.

In the first quarter, the Cubs blew the Jackets away. By the half, however, Fredonia had worked their way back into the competition, only being down by eight.

In the third quarter, Fredonia eventually took the lead, but not for long. The Cubs retained the lead by the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter ended with the score tied at 51-51, meaning the game had to go into overtime.

In overtime, the Cubs’ speed and athletic ability helped them pull away at the end and win with a score of 60-58.

Leading the Cubs in this victory was sophomore Sam Norris. Norris led the team in points, with 16, steals with four, and assists with four.

“ It feels great, but if I did not have the team that I have, I could not do as well. We play really good together, so I think that we have some success ahead of us,” said Norris.

Right behind Norris in scoring was Trey Zartman, jr., with 15 points of his own.

“ It was a great feeling. Everybody gave everything they had and left it on the court. The fans were a big factor in the win. They were loud and got into it,” said Zartman.

Drue Barton, jr., also assisted the team by scoring 13 points.

“ I do not think my three was that big of a difference in the game, it just felt good beating Fredonia,” said Barton.

“ Fouls were definitely a problem against Fredonia. Four of our five starters were in foul trouble by the third quarter. We needed to slow down our rhythm and control ourselves,” said Tilman.

The Lady Cubs defense let three Fredonia players score in double figures.

“ It is always hard to be so close and then lose like that, but we have to build off the positive things we did in the game and not hang our heads,” said North.
