Pleasanton tournament
turns out good results

Pleasanton, Jan. 17, 19, and 21- Varsity Cubs headed into
Pleasanton with confidence, winning two out of three games.
During the first game against Pleasanton, the boys came out with a score
of 63-42, with juniors Josh Honas and Drue Barton the top scorers in the
game. Honas pulled a total of 17 points for the team, while Barton put in
14.
“
I thought that I did alright, nothing spectacular,” said Honas. “My
other teammates played very well and were the main reason that I scored those
points.”
The Cubs loss was to Metro with a score of 60-72, ending their winning streak.
However, the team kept their confidence leveled and continued to battle throughout
the game.
With 19 points, Norris became the lead scorer of the game, followed closely
by Thomas and Zartman with 12 points each. Barton contributed nine points,
while Sweeney added in five. With an additional three points, Honas rounded
off the score.

“
We all had a lot of confidence, playing tough defense and having great spacing,” said
Norris. “Our team environment was very positive and the team’s
chemistry is becoming really good.”
In the final game against Uniontown, the Cubs stacked on another win with
a score of 65-43. Honas was again at the top with a total of 20 points.
“
Our team defense continually improving, and I can definitely tell that we
are getting better every time that we go out,” said head coach Jason
Jones. “The way that we passed is definitely improving, and we are
getting in better shots because of that.”
Also, Norris brought in 14 points against the Eagles, while Sweeney rounded
up eight. Both Zartman and Thomas scored six points each, just as Cliff Adams,
jr., and Barton scored four points each. Also contributing to the win with
points were Tanner Korf, jr., with two and Cole with one.
Varsity boys successfully take on Eureka

Humboldt, Jan. 24- Humboldt faced Eureka in a close game with
the final score at 55-42.
Anthony Sweeney, sr., Cliff Adams, jr., and Josh Honas, jr., all scored two
points. Sam Norris, so., had four points, while Drue Barton, jr., had five.
“
I thought I played pretty well, but there were times when I took a shot and
I knew that I should not have,” said Barton.
Humboldt scored 16 points in the second quarter, but Eureka outscored them
with 17.
In the first half, the Cubs had seven team fouls, while Eureka had only four.
Trey Zartman, jr., was the lead scorer in this quarter with four three-point
shots for a total of 12 points. Adams and Norris each scored twice.
The boys pulled into the lead, however and went into halftime with a score
of 31-25.
During the third quarter, the Cubs kept the lead with a score of 43-34. The
team made 12 points throughout the quarter and Eureka had only eight more.
Sweeney and Norris each made three points, and Barton had a total of five.
In the final quarter, Humboldt scored another 12 points to Eureka’s
nine, making the final score 55-42.
Zartman had six points, while Barton, Norris, and Honas all scored two each.
Zartman also scored the most points overall. He had 18 points altogether.
“
Some nights I will be on and others I will not be. I am just fortunate to
have teammates that can pick umy slack when I am off.” said Zartman.
Cubs find edge over Cherryvale, win
55-53

Cherryvale, Jan. 13- The varsity boys’ team traveled
to Cherryvale and were able to defeat the Chargers in a close game that came
down to one
shot. The final score of the game was 55-53.
Leading the Cubs in scoring was Trey Zartman, jr., with 12 points. Following
Zartman in scoring was Josh Honas, jr., with 11 points, and tying for third
was Sam Norris, so., and Tory Thomas, jr., with nine points each.
Drue Barton, jr., contributed to the team with eight more points, while senior
Anthony Sweeney chipped in with four of his own. Junior Cliff Adams also
had two points.
Norris led the Cubs in assists with four total. Sweeney had two assists as
well, while Zartman and Barton each had one of their own.
“
I think that we played better than we did against Yates Center, but we still
have some things to work on,” said Honas.

Although the Chargers
did outscore the Cubs at the free throw line, the team managed to out shoot
Cherryvale in its three-point shot percentage. The Cubs
shot 46 percent from the arc versus the 37.3 percent shot by the Chargers.
The Cubs out-rebounded the Chargers as well by a margin of 11. The boys had
38 total rebounds against the Chargers’ 27.
Leading the Cubs in rebounding was Honas with 12, including four offensive
rebounds. Cliff Adams, jr., pulled down 11 rebounds, two of which were offensive.
Sweeney made four rebounds with one as offensive.
“
We played very well, and we got the win. That is what matters,” said
Adams.
The boys also out did the Chargers in blocks. The Cubs achieved two blocked
shots, while the Chargers had zero. Drue Barton, jr., was credited with both
of the blocks.
Second place
finish for varsity

Pleasanton, Jan. 17,19,21- Humboldt varsity girls
played in the Pleasanton Mid-Season Tournament last week, winning two out
of three games. The girls first played against Pleasanton, Crest, and Kansas
City Metro.
In the first game of the tournament, the varsity girls were victorious
over the Pleasanton Blue Jays, with a final score of 68-45.
Kristin North, sr., was the leading scorer with 19 points, while Cara Tilman
and Mallory Mueller, srs., followed closely behind with 11 and 10 points,
respectively.
The team made 17 free throws out of 24 overall attempts.

Maegan Wall, sr., led the team at the free throw line making
all six of her attempts, while North, Deedra Barnett and Terra Woods, sos.,
and Michele
Rickner, jr., all made two of their individual attempts at the free throw
line.
“
We played very well as a team, which helped lead us to victory. Our defense
was good and we were beating them up and down the court,” said Kayla
Owens, sr.
The Crest Lancers were also defeated during their game against Humboldt,
with a final score of 62-46.
Mueller and North were the leading scorers, tying with 15 points each.
Sarah Riebel, sr., was next in line with nine points of her own.
In the final championship game, the Lady Cubs lost by only
ten points to KC Metro, leaving the score at 44-54.
Mueller led the offense with 17 points, while North came upclose behind
her with 10.
Even when the team lost, the girls took it in stride.
“
We played this team, which compares nicely with Burlington, to our fullest
potential. Even though it was a loss, it was a game we can be proud of,” said
North.
Overall, the Lady Cubs still placed second in the tournament by defeating
Pleasanton and the Crest Lancers with pride.
“
Our team did awesome. We played really hard and kept our heads up,” said
Terra Woods, so. “We were not that disappointed about getting second
because we played our best against that last team. Our coaches were proud
of us as well.”
Lady Cubs come up short
against Chargers

Cherryvale, Jan. 13- Despite their efforts, the Lady Cubs varsity
team unfortunately came up short against the Cherryvale Chargers with a score
of 30-57.
Starting out the game were seniors Kristin North, Mallory Mueller, and Sarah
Riebel. Junior Michele Rickner also started against Cherryvale.
In the first quarter, the Lady Cubs came up with 11 points to the Cherryvale
Chargers’ nine.
Mueller and Riebel brought in two points each, while Cara Tilman, sr., and
North each chipped in with three. Kayla Owens, sr., made one free throw.
“
We came out really aggressive and got off to a good start and we also kept
up a good fight throughout the game. It was a good game and we played well,
but we will just get them the next time they come to our house,” said
Mueller
During the second quarter, the Cubs scored a total of seven points, while
the Chargers doubled that and scored 14.
North and Tilman each made three-point shots. Riebel contributed one free
throw shot. At the end of the first half, the Chargers led the Cubs 23-18.
Returning from halftime, the Cubs came out and scored eight points, but could
not keep up with the Chargers, who scored a total of eleven. North had a
one three-point shot in addtion to a single two-point shot. North also made
one of her free throw shots, while Maegan Wall, sr., was successful in two
of her free throw attempts.
The Lady Cubs scored a total of 12 points in the fourth quarter, but the
Chargers scored 23. Mueller had five points and made two free throw shots.
North led the Lady Cubs with a total of 17 points. North made double two-point
shots and one free throw.
“
Cherryvale is a good team, and I am not going to lie. However, I still think
that we are every bit as good as they are. Cherryvale had better watch out, because
we are going to show them who is better whenever they come to play in our house,” said
North.
“
We played hard against a very good teams,” said head coach Jon Johnson,
head coach.
The Chargers won the game with a final score of 30-57.

Cubs prove too strong for Tornadoes

Humboldt, Jan. 24- Playing Eureka at home, the junior varsity
boys put a win past the Tornadoes by 25 points, with the final score at 52-27.
“We played both halves of the game really well. We were able to take charge
and we never let up,” said Justin Kaufman, jr. “I was really proud
of how the team came together and played well as a team.”
Leading the Cubs in scoring was Zach Cole, so., with 19 points total. Coming
in not far behind was Thad Wells, fr., with 11 more points, and Tanner Korf,
jr., came in third in the scoring department with six points of his own.
The Cubs took charge in the first quarter of the game by outscoring the Tornadoes
by a margin of 16 points. The total score after the first quarter was a drastic
21-6, with the Cubs going strong. By time the first quarter was over, the Cubs
were confident enough to hold on the rest of the game and come out victorious.
“The team played well both offensively and defensively,” said Chas
Wille, so. “We were able to get the ball, and we hardly made any mistakes.
We were able to go out there, dominate, and take the win out from under their
noses.”
After both the second and third quarters, the Cubs continued to stay ahead scoring
15 points to the Tornadoes’ five points. The Tornadoes rallied in the fourth
quarter to outscore the Cubs 5-8, but in the end the Cubs were just too strong
for Eureka.
C-Team successful against Pleasanton

Pleasanton, Jan. 15- The Humboldt boys’ C-team pulled
off a win against Pleasanton.
Leading scorer of the game for the Cubs was Devin Myers, so., with eight
points. The game ended with a close score of 30-26.
The Cubs out-rebounded the Blue Jays by four and only committed six offensive
turnovers during the entire game.
“
Our defense really stepped it up, and we outplayed them in every aspect of
the game, mentally and physically,” said Zach Crays, so.
The Cubs went into the half leading 14-12 and kept the lead over the Blue
Jays in the second half with a score of 16-14.
“
I felt that we came out the second half fired up having the lead, we did
not want them to have it back,” said Andrew Whitaker, fr.
JV boys fall to Chargers

Cherryvale, Jan. 13- Despite a strong second half effort, the
junior varsity boys could not come up with a win against the Cherryvale Chargers.
The final score of the game was a disappointing 43-41, with a loss to the
Chargers.
The leading scorers for the JV Cubs were Zach Cole, so., with 13 points and
Andrew Whitaker, fr., with eight.
“
I think that we should have won, but we had too many turnovers and that was
what killed us,” said Cole.
The Cubs also out-rebounded the Chargers 15 to 12, and only committed three
turnovers in the entire second half of play. The boys went back and forth
with the Chargers all throughout the game, but the Cubs were unable to hit
their free throws, only making six out of 14.
“
We could improve some on our defense, as well as finishing games when we
get in tough situations,” said Brent Frederick, jr.
The JV boys will resume play tonight against the Fredonia Yellowjackets.
Tornadoes blow past varsity

Humboldt, Jan. 24- The Lady Cubs lost a down-to-the-wire game
at home against the Eureka Tornadoes. The Ladies lost with a final score
of 31-33, as their last second efforts came up short in the final portion
of the game.
The leading scorers for the Ladies were seniors Mallory Mueller and Cara
Tilman, each with nine points. Making 11 out of their 14 free throws, the
girls faired well. The Ladies only committed six fouls in the first half,
which kept Eureka off the free throw line in the first half.
Entering the second half with an 18-15 lead, the team kept the score close
for the rest to the game. Humboldt also scored all attempted points in the
paint and from the free throw line.
Humboldt victorious over Pleasonton,
25-23

Pleasanton, Jan. 20- It was a close game against the Pleasanton
Blue Jays for the junior varsity girls, with a score of 25-23 as the team
struggled offensively for the win.
The leading scorers were Adrienne Gutierrez, so., Sarah Works, so., and Randi
Barnett, fr., all scoring six points each. Katie Manbeck, so., strolled right
along behind with four points.
“
We began the game overly confident, so we did not play to our full potential,” said
Manbeck. “However, I think that we have learned from our mistakes and
we will be prepared to face Fredonia on Friday night.”
Junior varsity girls shunned by Chargers

Cherryvale, Jan. 13- Cherryvale’s junior varsity team
proved too strong for the Lady Cubs, handing the girls a 31-43 loss.
“
I think our passing could improve a little bit more. We all need to work
on the small things to make us look better when we play,” said Adrienne
Gutierrez, so.
Gutierrez was the leading scorer for the game with 10 points.
“
We played really well and even though our offense was a little crazy, we
figured it out,” said Gutierrez.
Following Guiterrez in scoring were sophomores Sarah Works and Terra Woods
with eight points each.
“
Even though we lost, I feel that we did okay. They were a pretty good team
with a few varsity players coming down to play JV. They outscored us, but
I feel that we out-worked them,” said Works.
