Varsity Cubs bring in new
year with victory over Wildcats
By Jesse Lundine, senior
District News Editor
Humboldt, Jan. 6 - As the community looked
forward to the new year, so did the Cubs’ varsity basketball team, ringing
it in with a win over their rivals, the Yates Center Wildcats.
The Cubs engaged in a real barn-burner, whose outcome came down to how they
played their final minutes. The Cubs outscored Yates Center by six points,
winning 45-39.
There was a duo of leading scorers, as Tory Thomas, jr., and Sam Norris, so.,
contributed 13 points each.
Thomas played a total of 16 minutes, almost averaging one point a minute,
while Norris averaged almost one point every three minutes.
“We started off slow, but finished strong. I am glad that we came out
with the win,” said Jason Jones, head coach.
Foul shots became one of the more determining factors in the game.

Humboldt made 57 percent of their shots from the line, while
Yates Center shot only 44 percent of their own.
Anthony Sweeney, sr., shot 100 percent at the free throw line, scoring in
each of his attempted free throws
Josh Honas, jr., succeeded at the line, as well, by making four of his five
attempted shots.
“We did not play as well as we should have in the first half, but we
made up for it in the second half by playing extremely hard,” said Honas.
The Cubs out-rebounded their opponents 30-18.
Cliff Adams, jr., led the Cubs with 10 rebounds, and Honas trailed behind
with six other rebounds.
Trey Zartman, jr., paced the team with three assists and four steals.
“We did not really meet our potential, but there is still the rest of
the season for improvements,” said Adams.
Thomas led the team again, this time from the three point line making 60 percent
of his shots.
Zartman and Norris were only 25 percent from the three point line, however.
“Tory [Thomas] had to sit out the whole second quarter with fouls. Having
him back, and the way our defense stepped up, was the final determining factor
for our success,” said Jones.
Even though mistakes were made, the players recognize these faults and continue
to train and strive for perfection in their game.
“It would have been nice if we would have scored more points over them,
considering they were missing two key players. But, since it was a win, we
will take what we received and run with it,” said Sweeney.
Varsity is looking forward to playing against the Chargers tonight in Cherryvale.
“I think we have the potential to win against anybody if we put our
minds to it, like we did against Burlington,” said Sweeney.

Humboldt, Jan 7 - Junior varsity split a win
and loss in the tournament last Saturday against Fredonia and Burlington,
respectively.
They played Burlington first, barely losing with a score of 42-47.
Playing their second game against the Yellow Jackets, the Cubs came out with
a more satisfying game, winning 71-41.
“I think we were just tired to start off,” Chas Wille, so.
In the Burlington game, the boys had a hard time getting started, Zach Cole,
so., being the only scorer with eight points in the entire first quarter.

second quarter. Josh Elder, fr., and Andrew Whitaker, fr., scored two each,
while Cole scored another four points. Wille and Whitaker each made one out
of two free throws.

up to only five points in the third quarter.
Finally, in the last quarter, the boys went on a roll, scoring 19 last points.
Cole once against led the scores with 12 points, and Thad Wells, fr., pulled
off seven, as well.
“Well, it was eight-thirty in the morning, and we were a teensy-tiny-bit-flabbergasted
during the game,” said Tanner Korf, jr.
By the time their game against Fredonia came around, however, the guys seemed
to hold a new confidence, scoring 22 points in just the first quarter.

Many of them expressed their regrets, and they all seem to be looking forward
to doing better in future games.
“I think that we are a championship team with great caliber, and that
we are playing against outstanding teams. But we had the potential to go undefeated,”
said Korf.
The JV team is also looking forward to a game against Cherryvale tonight,
and with their competitive attitudes, it looks like they are ready to pull
off another win.

There were also only 10 turnovers committed by the Cubs, which
gave them more time on offense.

half, but we began to pick it up during the second half,” said Owens.
The Ladies scored most of their points in the paint, by only making two three-pointers
in the game.
“We started out slow and not playing smart, but in the second half,
the team stepped it up on offense and defense very well,” said Tilman.
The Ladies’ defense held the Wildcats to 20 points in the second half
and 12 points in the first half.
On the Cubs’ offensive side of the ball, the Ladies two high scorers
each had five shots a piece in the paint, with no three point shots.
The varsity Lady Cubs will resume play tonight against the Cherryvale Lady
Chargers. They have been practicing hard and are going into the game confident.
“Cherryvale is having a pretty good season this year, so if we are going
to beat them we can not let up. If we just play Lady Cub basketball, we will
have no problem beating them. We have also put in a new play that I think
will give us a lot of open shots,” said Rickner.

The Cubs were up by one point at halftime with a score of 9-8.
During the third quarter, the Wildcats came back and scored six points to
Humboldt’s four to change the score by one in Yates Center’s favor.

to only two points for the quarter.
“I think we could have done a better job during the first half. We played
alright, but I think we could have improved in some areas. Even though in
the second half we played much better, we could work on our passing a little
more. The next time we play, we will be better. We all worked as a team and
won the game,” said Gutierrez.
Humboldt had one foul in the first half, while the Wildcats had five. In the
second half, the Cubs had seven fouls to Yates Center’s five.
“The girls came out really slow in the first half, but changed the pace
in the second and played a much better ball game,” said Sheri Bagshaw,
assistant coach.
In the end, Randi Barnett led the Cubs in points, bringing in eleven altogether.
Baker followed with four, while Works and Deedra Barnett both had three. Gutierrez
chipped in with two.
“We ran our press really well and that helped us a lot. We took our
