Volleyball makes second round at Sub-State

Burlington, Oct. 22- A split win and loss to Yates Center and Eureka, respectively, ended the season for the varsity volleyball team.

Humboldt played their first match against the Wildcats, coming out victorious with final scores of 25-12 and 25-17.

Whitney Piley, sr., led the first match with 14 points, four aces, and managed two blocks. Pulling off five kills, as well as a block, was Mallory Mueller, sr. Kelci Owens, fr., additionally completed 14 assists, three aces, and three digs during her time on the court.

“The girls were confident and played well against Yates Center, but they did not continue that against Eureka,” said Teri Shaughnessy, head coach.

The Lady Cubs went into the second match with confidence, but their results reflected differently.

Tilman led this time with 11 points and five kills, while Mueller scored three aces and four kills. Owens managed another 11 assists and one ace. Also securing a block each were Piley and Rickner, while Kristin North, sr., had three digs.

“We made a lot of mental errors and did not react quick enough on defense. We were off and Eureka was on,” said Shaughnessy.

Humboldt ultimately lost their match against the Tornadoes with scores of 22-25 and 18-25.

“It would have been nice for us to have been able to play for the championship,” said North.

The Lady Cubs should forget their disappointment, however. Their record this year has been the best since 1991.

“It felt good to actually win some games and have fun while we were playing the game,” said Piley.

The girls ended their season with an overall record of 17-11 and a record of 4-3 in Tri-Valley League play. A winning tradition if expected to follow in the coming years.

“It felt good to have this accomplishment for our senior year,” said Mueller.


Parents witness win at last game

Humboldt, Oct. 18- It was a bittersweet ending for the Lady Cubs last home game, as their two match win over Yates Center was also on Parents’ Night.

The final scores of the first match were 25-18 and 25-17, while the second match was left at 25-19 and 25-17.

“The seniors should take pride in accomplishing their goals, because they had an incredible season. We will be filling a lot of shoes next season,” said Teri Shaughnessy, head coach.

In the first match, Mallory Mueller, sr., was the high scorer of the evening with 15 points, five aces, and three blocks. Cara Tilman, sr., came in close with 11 points and also successfully completed ten kills. Kelci Owens, fr., came out with 11 assists and six digs.

During their second match, Kristin North, sr., led the team with 11 points. Owens managed another 16 assists, while Tilman pulled off 16 digs. Securing three blocks was Michele Rickner, jr., and Katie Manbeck, so., completed two aces.

“Even though we did not play near as good as we could have, it still felt awesome to win our last home game,” said Tilman.

Junior Varsity finished off the season with a win against the Yates Center Wildcats, leaving their overall record at 13-5. Final scores were 25-14, 20-25, and 16-14.

Overall Bailey Myers, fr., led the team with 12 points and three aces, while Sarah Works, so., hammered in six kills and provided six assists.


Season ends with Bi-District loss

Wellsville, Nov. 1- In a heartbreaking loss to the Wellsville Eagles in Bi-District play, the Cubs walked away with a season ending score of 14-33.

“I felt that we played with everything we had, and we left it all out there on the field,” said Derek Wrestler, sr.

Overall, the team’s offense made 35 rushing attempts for 81 yards and 26 passing attempts for a total of 86 yards, with the total gained at 167 yards.

Sam Norris, so., gained 56 yards, while Tyler Thomas, sr., caught a 32-yard interception. Thomas also recovered a fumble, as well as Shane Stanley, sr.

“I think that we played very well considering the fact that they outsized us by quite a bit,” said Zach Cole, so.

As for points, Tory Thomas, jr., made the first touchdown in a two-yard run during the second quarter. Drue Barton, jr., successfully kicked a field goal for the extra point.

Tyler Thomas ran seven yards for the second touchdown, while Barton kicked an additional field goal, bringing the score up to a tie at 14-14.

The Cubs ended their season with a 6-4 record and have a total of eight departing seniors this year.

“We showed that heart goes a long way, and we proved the people that did not believe in us wrong,” said Robbie Ball, sr.


Cubs fiercly shutout Northeast Arma, 32-0

Humboldt, Oct. 27- Making it to the playoffs for the third year in a row, the Cubs beat the Northeast Arma Vikings on Parents’ Night. The game was a completely shutout, with the final score at 32-0.

“It felt really good winning on Parents’ Night and going undefeated at home my senior year,” said Tyler Thomas, sr.

The Cub defense has allowed no more than two touchdowns in only four games this season. Outscoring their opponents through the first nine games 232 to 94, they also pulled off four shutouts. No more than two touchdowns were given up against the black shirt defense.

“The defense has played great during the last four games. Our offense ran the ball well against Arma. Our teams played more consistently and we had a kick off return that was run back for a touchdown, but it was called back on a holding penalty,” said Jeremy Weilert, assistant coach.

Thad Wells, fr., led in rushing, running for a total of 95 yards out of 18 carries.

“It felt weird, because I was not expecting to get in the second quarter. We did really well. It was awesome being behind the line and expecting to get yards,” said Wells.

The Cubs ended their regular season with a 6-2 record, bringing them into the 3A state play-offs.


Sports Brief

JV FB goes 5-1 for season

Humboldt, Oct. 17- The JV Erie Red Devils ran into tough times in Humboldt, as the JV Cubs won the game 14-0.

“I think that we played well, but we could have done a lot better,” said Devin Onnen, fr.

Freshmen Thad Wells and Andrew Whitaker scored two touchdowns for the Cubs, while other players made big plays for the offense as well.

Duane Hibbs, sr., had the only catch of the night for 25 yards. This allowed Whitaker to go 1-8 with 25 yards passing. Wells had a big game as well, earning 102 rushing yards.

Defense played a large part in the shut out. Zach Cole, so., had 11 tackles, while Onnen had one forced fumble. Nate Bartlett, fr., additionally forced a fumble.

This game against Erie ended the junior varsity football season for the Cubs with a record of 5-1.

“I think it took us awhile to start going offensively, but we picked it up defensively and played a decent game. We need to work on tackling too, but we won and thats all that matters,” said Wells.

“On the defensive side of the ball, we caused alot of turnovers. On the offensive side, we had alot of turnovers ourselves,” said Scott Sollars, fr.

Ladies win one at Neody Tournament

Neodesha, Oct. 15- Neodesha Tournament play proved to be a learning experience for the Lady Cubs volleyball team. The girls traveled to Neodesha, bringing their 14-10 record with them.

Unfortunately, the girls lost their first match against Fredonia with scores of 24-26, 25-14, and 18-25.

Leading the team in both points and aces was Kelci Owens, fr., with 24 points, four aces and 17 assists, followed by Cara Tilman, sr., with 11 points, 11 kills, and 19 digs.

The second match against Baxter Springs also proved to be a disappointment for the Lady Cubs, losing to scores of 19-25 and 22-25. Whitney Piley, sr., led the team against Baxter Springs with 11 points, one ace, and seven digs, followed closely by Mallory Mueller, sr., with nine points, five kills, and seven digs.

“We did not communicate and play together against Fredonia and Baxter Springs, but neither team allowed us much room for error, they were competitive,” said Teri Shaughnessy, head volleyball coach.

The Lady Cubs refused to go down easy, however. The team was able to defeat Pittsburg, who later went on to win the tournament, with scores of 8-25, 25-13, and 25-21. Tilman once again led the team with 15 points, three aces, and 28 digs, followed by Katie Manbeck, so., who had 11 points, one ace, and one dig.

“We have some things to work on, but I think the whole team played very well against Pittsburg,” said Mueller.

Cubs raided at Frontenac

Frontenac, Oct. 21- A disappointing loss against the Frontenac Raiders left the Cubs with a final score of 0-20.

“We never really established anything on the line of scrimmage and we kept giving Frontenac the short field, because we could not move the ball,” said Jason Feeback, offensive and defensive line coach.

Overall, the team managed to have seven first downs, but their running game was not very successful with 33 rushing attempts for 29 yards. The Cubs pulled off two passes for 19 yards. Defensively, the leading tackler was Derrick Onnen, sr., with a total of 17 tackles and one quarterback sack. The second leading tackler was Sam Norris, so., with 15 tackles.

“I think we played hard defensively, but offensively we shot ourselves in the foot several times and our special team gave up the opening kickoff. So, that became a special target,” said K.B. Criss, head coach.

As for individual stats, the leading rusher was Stephan Nickell, sr., who rushed for 24 yards on six attempts. Tyler Thomas, sr., had 13 rush attempts for 22 yards, and Tory Thomas, jr., successfully completed two passes for 19 yards to Trey Zartman, jr.

“I feel the game made an impact, because it put us in a harder position in the playoffs and we did not make our goal of district champs,” said Josh Poovey, jr.

Varsity prevails at Erie

Erie, Oct. 14- The Cubs came home proud after a 30-0 victory and shutout over the Erie Red Devils.

“Overall, I think that they played hard, but we just need to work on finishing offensive drives when we get in the red zone,” said K.B. Criss, head coach.

The Cubs had 11 completed passes, one interception, and gained 161 passing yards. Offense managed to collect a total of 403 yards.

“We did good, but we had a few mess ups,” said Drue Barton, jr.

Neither of the Cubs two fumbles were lost, however, the team was given eight penalties where they lost 80 yards.

With just under five minutes left in the first quarter, Tory Thomas, jr., made a one-yard run for the first touchdown.

Sam Norris, so., ran in the next touchdown, catching a 42-yard interception, but the Cubs did not receive the extra point.

In the second quarter, Tyler Thomas, sr., made a 13-yard run for the Cubs third touchdown, where the Cubs once again failed get the extra point.

In the last few seconds of the quarter, Barton completed a spectacular play, kicking a 42-yard field goal, straight down the middle, bringing the total score to 22-0 for the first half.

With five minutes left in the game, Tyler Thomas ran 11 yards for the last touchdown leaving the final score 30-0.

“I was happy with the way we played defensively,” said Criss. “But, we just need to work on executing better offensively.”
