Fredonia wins struggle at Humboldt

Humboldt, Oct. 11- Splitting a loss and a win in two matches against Fredonia and Hamilton, respectively, the varsity Lady Cubs came away with mixed feelings.

Against the Yellowjackets, the Lady Cubs played a close game and the final scores ended up 22/25 and 21/25. In the match against Hamilton, the girls pulled off a win with the final scores at 25/18 and 25/11.

“ We did not live up to our expectations against either of our opponents. We let Fredonia dominate the entire match and we had a difficult time coming back alive and getting into a rhythm,” said Teri Shaughnessy, head coach.

During the match against Fredonia, Cara Tilman, sr., pulled ahead with nine points, five kills, and three digs. Mallory Mueller, sr., also managed five kills, while Whitney Piley and Kristin North, srs., pulled off two aces each. Piley also secured two blocks and Kelci Owens, fr., made four assists.

“I feel we weren’t the same team that we have been. We didn’t play as well together like we usually do,” said Mueller.

Against the Tigers, Tilman led once again with 17 points and one dig. North managed one dig and completed three aces, while Mueller stood out with eight more kills. Owens made eleven more assists and Michele Rickner, jr., secured five blocks.

Despite the varsity team’s loss, the junior varsity managed to win their match against the Yellowjackets, winning two out of three games. The final scores were 21/25, 25/22, and 15/11.

“We started out a little weak, but came out strong in the end,” said Sarah Works, so.


Overall, Hali Dawson, so., led with 13 points, while Works and Lenzie Boring, fr., followed closely with eleven points each. Next came Callie Umholtz, fr., scoring nine points and Katie Manbeck, so., with seven. Shelley Herder, fr., and Bailey Myers, fr., rounded out the scoring for the victory with four points each.


Lady Cubs dominate Tornadoes

Humboldt, Oct. 4– Blowing the Eureka Tornadoes away in both of their matches, the Lady Cubs walked out with two wins. The final scores of the first match were 25/16 and 25/19, while the final scores for the second match were 25/21 and 25/16.

“Everybody came out fired up, and overall I think we played one of the best games of the season,” said Whitney Piley, sr.

In the first match Piley led the team with 13 points and three blocks, while Mallory Mueller, sr., completed ten kills.

“ I think the team played really well that night, we were really focused and ready to play, I think we could have been intimidated by them, but we started out on top and got them off their game.” said Mueller.

Cara Tilman, sr., and Kelci Owens, fr., managed one ace each. Owens also achieved six assists and Tilman pulled off ten digs.

During the second match, Maegan Wall, sr., led with 13 points, while Tilman followed closely behind with ten points in addition to five kills, one block, and nine digs.

Owens pulled off another seven assists in this match, while Tilman, Piley, and Michele Rickner, jr., completed one block each.

“We had two intense games; the girls communicated as a team, and the crowd helped us stay motivated and focused,” said Teri Shaughnessy, head coach.

As for junior varsity, the Lady Cubs lost two out of three games in their match against the Tornadoes.

Katie Manbeck, so., led the team with 17 points, six assists, and three aces. Callie Umholtz, fr., also completed three kills.

“I think we could have worked harder on our defense. Eureka was different from previous teams because their serves were strong and their net play was pretty good. There was something in us that kept us from taking on that challenge,” said Hali Dawson, so.


Jackets sting varsity FB

Fredonia, Sept. 30- Suffering a disappointing loss against the Fredonia Yellowjackets, the Cubs played a close game with the final score ending up 13-14.

“ I felt at times that we played very well, but also at times we weren’t very focused,” said Travis Burk, defensive and offensive coordinator.

Overall, the Cubs managed 11 first downs, succeeded in 44 rushing attempts completing 103 yards, and managed 155 passing yards. The Cubs also secured four sacks, four interceptions, and two fumble recoveries. The team’s offense successfully gained a total of 258 yards.

“ I think that we lost a heartbreaker and we have got to convert on our extra points. We played well on defense, but we gave up a big play on third down inside the five-yard line. Our linebacker made a good play, but the receiver still caught it,” said Sam Norris, so.

As for the team’s individual players, Tyler Thomas, sr., made 22 rushing attempts and had two catches completing a total of 146 yards. he also caught one pass for a touchdown. Tory Thomas, jr., also made 18 rushes and five passes for a total of 59 yards. Drue Barton, jr., caught two passes for 63 yards and scored the other touchdown with one of his catches. Also, Norris completed two passes for 120 yards, and had two kickoff returns for 30 yards. Norris additionally made a fumble recovery.

“ We need to focus on stopping the running game, which they have a good running back. We will also focus on doing things right [next time],” said Burk.


JV swats Yellowjackets

Humboldt, Oct. 3- The junior varsity football team showed Humboldt that even if the varsity lost to Fredonia, they could still win anyway. The Cubs defeated the Yellowjackets in an 18-0 shutout.

Neither team scored in the first quarter. Thad Wells, fr., scored the Cubs first touchdown with just over five minutes left in the second quarter, but the Cubs failed to get the extra point. The score at halftime was 6-0. The Cubs defense had two interceptions in the first half, one by Thad Wells, fr., and another by Tanner Korf, jr.

The third quarter was also scoreless. The Cubs defense stayed strong with Zach Cole, so., starting the fourth quarter with a long touchdown catch. Again, the Cubs failed on the extra point try as offense started to stutter with just over seven minutes left in the game. Fredonia recovered a fumble and had good field position. The Cubs almost managed to get the ball back as Fredonia fumbled only a few seconds later, but the ball went out of bounds before a Cubs player could fall on it.

Wells made the third and final touchdown with only a minute and some change left in the game. Fredonia got the ball back, but not for long. Dalton Shannon, so., added one last misery to the Fredonia offense as he intercepted a pass. From there, the Cubs were able to run the clock out and win the game.


Homecoming game provides victory against Cherryvale

Humboldt, Oct. 7 – After three consecutive years of losing to the Cherryvale Chargers, the Cubs finally came away with a win. Completely shutting out the Chargers with a score of 35-0, the game was the fourth win of the season for the Cubs.

The night began with an 83 yard kick-off return touchdown by Sam Norris, so., which set the tone for the evening.

Chargers. The Cubs went on to win the game with a 35-0 shutout on Homecoming night.

“ We came out and executed in every aspect of the game, special teams, offense and defense,” said Derek Wrestler, sr.

Attaining a total of 183 yards rushing out of 39 attempts, the Cubs gained another 109 yards from eight passes against the Chargers.

“ This is the first time anyone has shut them out in six years,” said Tyler Thomas, sr.

Tyler Thomas rushed for an average of 70 yards and succeeded in one touchdown. Tory Thomas, jr., additionally rushed for an average 75 yards.

“ We played awesome and we did the small things right,” said Drue Barton, jr
.
Barton led with 13 recorded tackles and an assisted sack, while Derrick Onnen, sr., followed closely with ten recorded tackles. Norris pulled off two unassisted tackles and one assisted, as well as a 24 yard interception.

Trey Zartman, jr., and Onnen managed one pass deflection each, while Zartman also achieved a 17 yard touchdown passed by Tory Thomas.

Tyler Thomas completed a pass to Onnen to make a 20 yard touchdown and Barton ran in yet another touchdown for 21 yards.

Victories continue for JV volley

Leroy, Oct. 3- Continually dominating other teams with a 13-4 record, the junior varsity Lady Cubs once again pulled off a win against the Leroy Titans with final scores of 25/20 and 25/14. Although adding another win to their record, the Lady Cubs felt that they did not meet their full potential.

“We won the game, but it was really like we lost because we were not loud, and we did not work together well,” said Katie Manbeck, so.

Overall, Shelley Herder, fr., led the game with 31 points and completed ten aces. Hali Dawson, so., followed closely behind managing 28 points, four kills, and four aces.

Coming in ahead with nine kills, ten points, and one ace was Lenzie Boring, fr. Sarah Works so., had eight points, four kills, and one ace.

Pulling in 11 points, four kills and two aces was Callie Umholtz, fr. Bailey Myers, fr., came away with ten points, four kills, and two aces.

“We should have been more aggressive at the net, but avoided ending the game weak. We played as a team, worked well, digged well, and we had a lot of kills. Overall, I think we played pretty good,” said Boring.

JV football holds Chargers scoreless

Cherryvale, Oct. 10 - In junior varsity play, the football team carried out a repeat of history by shutting out the Cherryvale Chargers with a score of 24-0, just as the varsity team did this season.

“It was really exciting to beat the Chargers because they have always been a challenge in previous years,” said Drake Tilman, so.

Four touchdowns were scored during the game, two of which were made by Thad Wells, fr. Wells was closely followed behind by Zach Cole, so., and Casey Womelsdorf, jr., each scoring one touchdown.

“The game went really well. I hope we come out from our game against Erie with a big win. I think the season has gone great, even though it has been fast and short. I hope the junior varsity really backs up the varsity and cheers them on in their upcoming games,” said Womelsdorf.

The team showed off its defense throughout the entire game, while the offense picked up its enthusiasm in the second half.

“I was very pleased with our overall effort that the boys put out into the game. I was also very impressed with both our defensive and offensive lines,” said Travis Burk, defensive coach.

The next and final junior varsity game is at home against Erie on October 17.
