Cubs win third in a row
against Neody Bluestreaks

Humboldt, Sept. 16- The varsity Cubs offense
showed a considerable amount of determination against the Neodesha Bluestreaks,
securing their defeat
with a final score of 35-16, making this the Cubs’ third victory
in a row.
“
We had our good moments, but we’re going to continue to work hard and
get better,” said Jason Feeback, offensive and defensive line coach.
The Cubs attained a total of 199 yards rushing and achieved another 131 yards
from passing against the Bullpups.
Tyler Thomas, sr., rushed for 133 yards and succeeded in a touchdown. Garrett
Fitzmaurice, sr., rushed for two yards and managed to catch a thirty-yard
pass from Sam Norris, so., pulling off yet another touchdown. Norris also
passed a total of 74 yards and had two touchdown passes, while Tory Thomas,
jr., rushed for and secured two touchdowns of his own.
“
At times we looked pretty good, but I was disappointed in allowing a rushing
touchdown and our lack of effort. I was happy, however, of our win, and we’ll
do better against Caney,” said Travis Burk, defensive coordinator.
On the defensive side, the Cubs had one interception by Tory Thomas, who
also managed to complete one pass deflection, along with Shane Stanley, sr.,
Trey Zartman, jr., and Derrick Onnen, sr.

Hold that block

on September 16 at home. The Cubs won the game with a score of 35-16.
Although the Cubs defense allowed a total of 248 offensive
yards, they also managed to cover 330 total offensive yards.
Despite the varsity win, the junior varsity team suffered their first loss
of the season to the Bluestreaks on September 19, with a final score of 12-6.
“
We could improve our pass blocking. We played well on defense, and we also
had some key interceptions. I think we played hard,” said Thad Wells,
fr.
Andrew Whitaker, fr., connected with Zach Cole, so., on a 35 yard touchdown
pass. Wells led all running backs with 50 yards on the ground.
“
We blocked as good as should have, even though we let them score some they
shouldn’t have in the first place,” said Cole.
Whitaker also managed 40 yards passing, while Devin Myers, fr., had one interception
for the Cubs.
Caney, Sept. 23- The varsity Cubs suffered their first loss
of the football season to the Caney Bullpups with a score of 26-9.
“
We are just going to improve on overall game. That’s from stalk blocking
to our pass drops on defense,” said Drue Barton, jr.
Tyler Thomas, sr., lead all Cub rushers with 39 yards on 11 carries. Tory
Thomas, jr., had ten yards on 12 carries and completed six passes on 23 attempts
for 53 yards. Leading receiver was Zach Cole, so., with two catches, averaging
28 yards per catch.
“
I missed a lot of catches that I should have caught. We shot ourselves in
the foot, and we didn’t play to the best of our ability,” said
Cole.

All eyes on the ball.
The defensive line waits for the Bullpups to snap the ball. Losing the game with
a score of
9-26, the Cubs are looking forward to their next game against the
Fredonia Yellowjackets.
Defensively, Barton had 13 recorded tackles to
his name to lead the defense. Robbie Ball, sr., followed with ten tackles. Cole
and Zartman each had nine
tackles. Zartman also had an interception. Sam Norris, so., Garrett Fitzmaurice,
sr., and Josh Honas, jr., each got in to deflect a pass. Honas had also a
blocked kick.
“
It was disappointing and I thought we could of played better,” said
Shane Stanley, sr.
“
We missed a lot of big play opportunities that could have changed the outcome
of the game. We could have played better than we did as well. This week we
are going to come out and improve our performance in all aspects of the game.
I plan on playing this week,” said Derrick Onnen, sr.
Onnen was sidelined during this game due to a tailbone injury obtained in
practice.
Tonight the Cubs look to get back on the right track, the winning track,
by working hard and learning from their mistakes.The Cubs have been studying
their mistakes on film and plan to correct all their miscues. They go on
the road to face the Fredonia Yellow Jackets.
Burlington, Sept. 24- The Lady Cubs did well at the Burlington
Tournament, winning three out of five matches for fourth place.
“
We started pretty good, and we played as a team. We have something to be
proud of,” said Maegan Wall, sr.
The team won its first match against Madison, 25/19 and 25/12. Whitney Piley
sr., led with twelve points and Kelci Owens, fr., had 14 assists. Michele
Rickner, jr., had four blocks.
Against Ferdonia, the Lady Cubs won with scores of 25/19 and 25/18. Cara
Tilman, sr., led with 13 points, six kills, and three aces. Kelci Owens carried
out 11 more assists. Kayla Owens, sr., had three aces.

Bump it back.
Cara Tilman, sr., attempts to bump the ball back over the net during the Burlington
Varsity Tournament on September 24. The Lady Cubs went 3-2 during the
tournament.
In their third match, the Lady Cubs defeated Lebo 25/22 and
25/23. Kelci Owens gave the team 17 assists, while Tilman had a total of twelve
points
and nine
kills.
The Lady Cubs lost to Waverly with scores of 21/25, 25/19, and 22/25. Tilman
had 15 points and three aces. Kelci Owens had ten assists, and Mueller scored
eight kills. Rickner and Kayla Owens each secured two blocks.
In the third-place match against Lebo, the Cubs were defeated by scores of
25/16, 22/25 and 20/25. Kristin North, sr., led with 17 points and two aces.
Mueller
had 13 kills, while Kelci Owens managed 17 assists.
“
We made just enough mental mistakes to keep ourselves from medaling. Even though
the girls might have come away disappointed, they had a good day,” said
Teri Welch, head coach.
Volleyball unbeaten at Caney Valley

Caney, Sept. 26- The Lady Cubs went on a five-match winning
steak against Caney Valley Bullpups.
“
When we play together as a team and win, it’s so much fun,” said
Mallory Mueller, sr.
In the first match, the final scores were 25/22 and 25/19. Mueller attained
seven aces, and Kristin North sr., led with a total of 14 points. Whitney
Piley, sr., carried out six kills, while Cara Tilman sr., succeeded in nine
digs.
“
When we knew we could beat them, it was like we played at their level...
but, we came out with two wins, so that was good,” said Piley.
The second match proved to be more difficult with final scores of 25/16,
20/25 and 25/14.
Mueller took charge with twelve kills, while Tilman scored three aces and
twelve digs. Piley secured three blocks, and Kelci Owens, so. managed nine
assists.
As for the junior varsity games, the final scores against Caney’s B-team
were 25/17 and 25/19. The other two matches were against Caney’s
C-team.
The scores of the first match were 25/20 and 25/10, while the second ended
25/17 and 25/8.
“
We could have worked harder and been more aggressive, but we did good. We
were up and ready, which helped a great deal,” said Katie Manbeck,
so.
Overall, Manbeck led with a total of 38 points and six aces. Hali Dawson,
so., and Callie Umholtz, fr., each successfully carried out ten aces, while
Sarah Works, so., followed behind with nine more kills.
“
We came home with five wins, but we could have worked harder. I am proud
of the team, and we will continue to work,” said Dawson.
Sports Briefs
JV splits with Crest

Humboldt, Sept. 19- Despite going 1-1 against the Crest Lancers, with scores
of 25/18 and 25/17 in the first match and 23/25 and 20/25 in the second match,
the JV Lady Cubs lifted their spirits by placing their heads in the game
and working together as a team.
“
We could of done better, when one person did bad the rest of the team got down
and it was hard to get us back up,” said Hali Dawson, so.
Bailey Myers, fr., led the team with 24 points for the night, She also had
eight aces and one kill. Sarah Works, so., had 22 points, 11 assists and one
kill. Shelley Herder, fr., had 12 points, four kills, and two aces. Katie Manbeck,
so., had nine points, five kills, two aces, and seven assists. Callie Umholtz,
fr., with six points, five kills, and one assist.
“
Talking, hitting the floor, passing, more swings, and serving,” are
things we need to work on, said Manbeck.
