Editorial: After
prom party benefits students
By: Jordan Young
For the Editorial Board
Every year, high school students put on formal dresses and tuxedos
for a night of dancing and fun. They enjoy themselves at an event that they
hope will be memorable for years to come.
However, while high school students need to have fun on prom night, there
is a fine line between safe fun and dangerous fun. Some students follow the
rules of prom night and attend after prom and return home safely.
More and more students are seeing the increasingly positive
and safer side of prom night and after prom activities, and they are still
having fun. Prom night is a time students are supposed to remember for the
rest of their lives, and they should not do something they may regret in the
future.
Students that attend prom should consider going to after prom activities.
They provide a positive atmosphere in which students can enjoy themselves.
Students are supervised, and they learn how to have a good time in a controlled
enviornment while being responsible. Parents can feel comfortable letting
their children attend this event as well.
The after prom party is beneficial for many reasons. For one, the parents
supervise the entire after prom. The parents make sure the night does not
get too out of hand, and no alcoholic drinks or drugs are allowed. There is
a committee of parents there to watch and supervise the students and their
dates to make sure everyone is complying with the rules.
After prom offers door prizes and raffles for the students to win. Prizes
can include televisions, radios, gift certificates, movies, blankets, and
clothing. What better motivation do students need besides the chance to win
something like that?
Overall, the after prom party is a worthwhile event and a great alternative
to other means of having fun on prom night.
Special occasion justifies
spending(Pro)

Prom is a special event that happens once a year. It is one
of the few times where students should be able to go all out and spend a good
amount of money on their preparations.
The dance takes place on just one night out of the whole year, and for many
students it is a night full of fun memories with their classmates and close
friends. Students will remember the event for years to come, so why not spend
money on it and make it that much more memorable?
Of course, students should not spend every cent they have on their outfits
and accessories, but they should spend enough to look very nice. It is understandable
that some families and students can simply not afford to go out and buy a
brand new expensive outfit, purchase tanning minutes, make a hair appointment,
rent a car, or do anything too extravagant. However, prom should still not
be just another ordinary night and these items can help separate the event
from other dances. Many alternatives are available for those that do not want
to spend a lot, but why not go all out so that prom will be a night to remember
fondly throughout the years?

Prom is the only formal dance Humboldt has, and many students
look forward to it for months in advance. Because of this, students should
be able to get a reasonable amount of money to spend on their preparations.
Our Homecoming and Sweetheart dances are casual, so prom is often an even
more special night for most of the students because it is the one night they
can get all dressed up. While all the preparations to get so dressed up often
cost a lot, they are worth it because prom is such a special night to so many
students.
For seniors, it is one of the last nights they will be able to attend a school
dance or get together with most of their classmates. This makes prom even
more important for them and is another reason for seniors to spend money on
all of their preparations.
Regardless of how much money students spend on their prom preparations, prom
is about having a good time and making memories that students will remember
for the rest of their lives. Still, spending money on prom and looking nice
can contribute to whether or not students have a good time or a great one,
and almost every student would rather have a great time at the dance.
Responsible
habits should start now(Con)

While many students attend prom, the event often means more
to seniors. Still, even though prom seems like a big deal for the senior
class, it does not mean that they should burn a hole in their own or their
parents’ pockets.
Seniors need to learn how to save their money and spend it wisely so that
they will have some left over for better things like the summer or preparing
for and going to college. Spending money on something like prom may leave
their pockets too empty if something more important comes along in the future.

The seniors set an example for the younger high school students
and should practice being responsible adults by saving their money. This
money can be used for many different things like paying for announcements
and graduation gowns and other graduaion items. Seniors could use the money
for college expenses or other costs after graduation. Younger students need
to start saving now for these expenses that they will have to face in a
few years.
Why would someone want to spend so much money on something that they are
only going to wear once anyway? In Humboldt, there is a prom dress sale
where someone can get nice dresses for a good price. Shoes and jewelry are
also available for reasonable prices. Then they can just sell it again and
get some money back. It is much more economical that way.
Another way to save money is instead of going out to eat at an overpriced
restaurant, students can have their parents get together and prepare a little
banquet. Or they can just cook a nice meal for themselves and their date,
that way it will be more romantic. The point of the meal is to enjoy time
with dates and friends, and paying for and eating a high priced meal will
not necessarily mean students will have a better time. If anything, a home
cooked meal will mean that students can enjoy themselves in a more personal
atmosphere than a restaraunt.
The underclassmen that are going to attend prom should also practice saving
their money because by the time they get to their senior year, they will
realize that prom is not cheap at all, especially if they go mulitiple times.
They should develop good spending habits now before they leave high school
and have to face the real world. Once out of high school, prom will only
be a memory, and students may wonder why they spent so much money on only
one night.
Review: Beware of Catcher
in the Rye
By: Melanie Weilert
Editor-in-Chief
Once hailed as the most banned book of its generation, Catcher
in the Rye has more to worry about than profane language, premarital sex,
and subjects such as homosexuality.
J.D. Salinger may have written a controversial novel back in 1945, but he
did not do so in a way that would move his readers.
To be completely honest, I could not finish the book. Reading only one or
two pages in a single sitting was an extreme chore.
Paragraphs are pages long and details are repetitive. A glance at a website
such as Spark Notes made me realize that what I did read was pointless; the
entire book was summed up in a few brief paragraphs, without leaving out even
the smallest detail.
Salinger’s representation of Holden Caulfield as a ‘rebellious
teenager’ is untrue; Holden does little about anything, especially when
it comes to rebellion.
The story revolves around the situation that Holden creates when he is kicked
out of yet another prep school. Disinclined to apply himself in nearly every
situation, Holden appears to be incapable of forming relationships with many
of the people he encounters. He chooses labels such as ‘phony’
and ‘stupid’ to briefly analyze for his acquaintances, girlfriends,
and even his family. Whichever one word description he decides to use, it
is probably the only type of character description that the reader will ever
acquire from this book.
So, what actually happens in this novel? Nothing really. Although some of
the opening statements made in Catcher in the Rye show promise of insight
into Holden’s life, the interest I initially developed declined in the
following pages. A few instances, such as Holden’s encounter with a
prostitute in a dingy hotel and his sporadic obsession with a hometown babe,
do hold true to this promise, but barely live up to simple expectations.
Situations, characters, and other narrative features exist throughout the
storyline, but they do not develop into anything meaningful beyond Holden’s
immediate self-interest. Unless reading about a boy who despises his life
but refuses to do anything about it seems an interesting feat, then Catcher
in the Rye is definitely not worth the time.
What do you think about how much people spend on prom?
